What Is Acute Pancreatitis Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: Why is my cat limping?

My cat became ill two weeks ago;he stopped eating and drinking and was vomiting. I took him to the vet and after a few tests they said they didn't know what was causing it and sent us home with some meds. Two days later he had no improvement so I took him back and they hospitalized him. Three days later I was able to pick him up but before I got there they called and told me he had developed a limp in his left back leg and that it was probably caused from his nausea meds. They changed his medication and told me that I should notice his limp improve after a couple days with it being gone in a week. It's been a week and I have seen no improvement at all. I took him back to the vet and they tested him for diabetes which came back negative and told me they suspected he had had an acute pancreatitis. They still insists that the meds caused his limp. After a week shouldn't they be out of his system? Should I take him to another vet? He doesn't seem to be in any pain but I'm worried something more is going on here, Honestly my first thought was that maybe they dropped him during a feeding( they had to force feed him) and hurt his leg. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks more

Voting Question: Questions about Acute Pancreatitis?

Ok I'll try to be brief...... I am studying abroad right now and do not have access to my doctor until next summer. Im 22 btw. I have not drank since last summer (7 months) and its been REALLY tough. Ive made a lot of new friends here but the fact that I cant drink SERIOUSLY injures my social life. (I cant just go to bars and sit around while everyone gets drunk---ive done this a couple times and its just weird for everyone). So anyways my acute attack was relatively mild considering what Ive read about the disease---I was not hospitalized or put on any IVs. I just took painkillers for 1 day and thats it. I just was on a super strict diet for about 5 days. Then it went away. So my questions.....and I btw I WILL WAIT TILL I SEE MY DOCTOR AGAIN BEFORE I START DRINKING AGAIN. Im hoping he will say something positive, but I just want some general questions answered. Will I be able to ever drink again?? And even if I can....Will I be able to get DRUNK again? If my doctor says no.... Is there any kind of medication or even procedure which will allow me to drink/get drunk again? I just need some INFORMATION. I already checked some sites like WebMD and stuff.......but if you know any more helpful links post them here. I REALLY need to know......not being able to drink is absolutely destroying my social life.....and no one is availible to me to give me advice.........SO PLEASE GIVE ME SOME INFO!!!! Whatever the case is I WILL NOT TOUCH A DROP until I see my doctor........This is just for general information. Thanks for the help more

Resolved Question: Is my pancreatitis back?

In october i was admitted into hospital with acute pancreatitis caused by gallstones. I was in hospital for 8 days, in which i had my gallbladder removed. The doctor told me that i could suffer pancreatitis again. On wednesday i started to get the worst pain ever, but this time in my lower abdomen. This pain has not gone away, and i still have it now :( My stomach is very very tender to touch, and the pain is in my lower stomach and radiates round to my back but does move up around my ribs (which is where i had pain when i did have pancreatitis) My stomach feels very swollen, and the pain only eases when i sit forward, but really hurts when i stand! Im just really scared that i may have pancreatitis again, im only 24 and have 3 young children so this is all i need. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow, but just thought i'd see what you guys think?? I really don't want to go back in hospital again :( more

Resolved Question: Elevated Lipase levels?

Hello, About 7 weeks ago, I went into the hospital with what I thought was food poisoning, but turned out to be 2 things. The first being a perforation in my duodenum, the 2nd being mild acute pancreatitis. Had surgery to repair the perforation, then was NPO for the remaining 3 weeks I was in the hospital, on TPN... I was released 3 weeks ago, have been NPO since on TPN at home. I admit I've cheated a little bit, had some grilled chicken breast, some soup, clear liquids, etc.. but it's not like I'm eating 3 meals a day or anything... So, lipase in the hospital was in the 780s range.. I was released with it running in the 550s... A week later they drew blood and I was down in the 220's, then 178, then 108, and now 145... I had a CT 2 weeks ago showing the pancreatits was pretty much gone, no inflammation or anything left. The Dr. seeing me right now, is my surgeon, and my appointments with him are very brief, and he is usually very short with me... and sometimes he just calls me and says more TPN, we'll try again in a week. So my question is, first off.. what would be good lipase levels? According to quest diagnostics website (they are also the ones that do my labs) a normal lipase level for someone my age (26) is anything under 140. I got that information from http://www.questdiagnostics.com/kbase/topic/medtest/hw7976/results.htm - is this accurate? My amylase and the rest of my labs are great. My Dr. wants me under 100 before he can feel like we can stop the TPN, which by the way is a pain in the ass, and it keeps me from going to work. Given the results of my labs, and what the brief period of time I get advise from my Dr., should I get a 2nd opinion, or should I just rough it out? more

Resolved Question: My husband was hospitalised for acute pancreatitis about 7 weeks ago and told never to drink again?

He used to drink heavily every night but gave up completely for 6 weeks after hospital. A week ago he started drinking again - about 7 beers a night and also a few spirits. What is going to happen health-wise? more

Resolved Question: Could my brother's symptoms be chronic pancreatitis?

Long story short...my brother is an alcoholic. He is living with my husband and I temporarily so I'm seeing firsthand his actions and the consequences. To sum it up, I know my brother was hospitalized shortly with acute pancreatitis last year...and from what I can gather from docs, his liver functions tests have come back very high ever since. He was told to stop drinking but never did. Back then, he suffered from pain in his stomach and had chronic nausea and vomiting. Now, however, he is having chronic nausea and vomiting several times a week but says he feels absolutely NO pain. I have read that as pancreatitis progresses, the pain can actually subside. Anyone have experience with this as being true? He refuses to go to a doc..although this evening I told him he must if he wants to stay with us for the time we agreed upon. I think he is finally willing to go now but it wouldn't surprise me if he bailed on that plan and moved out. By the way, I have pleaded with him to stop drinking and get some help but his denial is unbelievable. He actually spends a day vomiting and then goes right back to drinking the following day and actually WONDERS why he continues to vomit. THAT is how deeply in denial this man has fallen. Please share your knowledge and experience if you have it (regarding the pancreatitis with no pain symptoms). My husband, ironically, is recovering from a similar path in his life (with drinking) but is doing great currently so I feel like I've been there already once and really don't enjoy seeing someone else in my life go down the same road. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Acute pancreatitis advice.?

Well that's what the hospital thought I had, I discharged myself before my blood work came back. I'm female and 18 and am not 100% sure I actually had pancreatitis. I had my last drink on Sunday morning about 4am? And started feeling really unwell about 9pm Monday night. Started with a dull back ache and then quite a severe upper adominal pain, I couldn't breathe. I was just starting to get a really bad cold aswell. I made myself sick and then was sick a couple of times without making myself when I got to the hospital. They did scans and it showed that everything was fine and healthy, they didn't even mention my pancreas so I'm assuming it wasn't swollen, they did a chest xray that came back healthy aswell. I was in for 3 days and they wanted me to stay at least another 2. The Doctor I spoke to said that "Next time you drink make sure to line your stomach drink some milk or take some gaviston and stick to your recommended allowance of units." But I've been reading some internet sites and it says that I can never drink again? What's the deal? more

Voting Question: I need to save my alcoholic brother and my obese sister. What can I do?

So... my brother has been an alcoholic for a little over 12 years. He's had multiple cases of acute pancreatitis and is currently in remission from esophageal cancer. As far as I know he still drinks. My brother is currently 36. My sister, last we spoke about it, weighs an excess of 445 pounds. She has always been large but, according to our last conversation, she has gained 105 pounds in the last 8 months. She'll turn 32 next month. Both of them seem reserved to death. I love them with all my heart and wish I could do something (ANYTHING!) for them. Our mother died of an alcohol poisoning just over ten years ago. We never knew our father. What can I do to stave off this seemingly inevitable tragedy? I don't want to be alone in this world... more

Resolved Question: Black lab has acute pain, cannot be explained.?

First I will say that my lab is only 2 & 1/2yrs old. So about 4 days ago my black lab got sick (not uncommon for her she has a bad GI system) we figured she ate to fast. Anyways, when I got up in the morning she was not acting her self. She didnt want to eat (even people food) or drink. Later on in the day she began doing this posturing stance where she would just walk around and then stop and stand there forever. She would not sit down or lay down, and she just would whine when you tried to make her get on furniture to rest or even lay down on the floor. We took her to the vet and had her checked out. But when we got to the vet she acted all normal and fine. They did express her anal glands as they were full, but they couldnt pinpoint the pain. They thought maybe pancreatitis but that was ruled out through lab work. So we brought her home and she continued to pace and walk around and not sit down. However, she started to eat and drink and was going to the bathroom. But she still did not want to play. The vet said if there was no improvement by the next day to bring her back. So we did bring her back and again she acted normal when we got to the vet. So they did radiographs, xrays, more blood work, etc and could not find anything abnormal. (There was like .2 increase on her white blood cells which honestly didnt mean a single thing). So the only thing the vet could tell me was possibly a soft tissue injury was causing her pain (due to the WBC count). They sent us home with rimadyl and after taking it she started to be alright. She has been on rimadyl before so I know it doesnt affect her badly (as I know most of you have probably seen the bad reports about pfizer and dog deaths due to rimadyl). Anyways, I decided to take her off it after only 2 days because she was acting decently like her self again. She had her last dose yesterday (wed 11/4/09) at 4:30-5ish. And so far today she is eating, wanting to play, relaxing, getting up on the furniture without us prying her to do so, and all body systems seem to be working ok. I am just wondering if anyone knows what could have possibly caused her to get this acute pain that cannot be explained, also if you ever had this happen to your dog (and did they get better), and if you know how long it takes for rimadyl to be out of the system...therefore I can see if it acutally is my dog getting better or the meds just masking her pain. Thanks and sorry this was so long.I already told all of this to the vet. Thanks for your answers so far.She was on rimadyl before for her spaying. She is not overweight she is actually right where she needs to be weight wise. I am thinking it could have been a number of things. I know it wasnt the smartest to take her off the rimadyl before the prescribed time but I just thought she was getting better so why keep a dog on soemthing that could cause further complications when she is already ok. Thanks so much for all the answers so far. They did xrays and radiographs of her stomach, thoracic cavity, abdomen, hind quarters, hips, and then they also did a hip dysplasia xray. At 5pm today it will be 24hrs since she had her last dose, so hopefully by then we will be able to see if it was the rimadyl or herself getting better on her own. Thanks again everyone for your help, and I def look forward to getting more response. The vet did a very good check on all the tests, and they actually had a second vet look at all of them just as a second opinion...neither could find anything! Strange. And I am an LPN and asked to look at them and I couldnt notice anything on her labs radiographs or xrays, that were out of the ordinary. more

Voting Question: Would Nexium help gallstone pain?

My husband awoke in the wee hours this morning with crushing pain right at the ribcage level and ended up vomiting a couple of times. We've been to the doctor and he thinks it's gastritis; he first tried having him swallow a topical anesthetic to be sure the pain wasn't radiating from the esophagus or upper portion of the stomach because of acid reflux (he just threw that up, and the pain wasn't helped at all). After making his diagnosis, he gave my husband some samples of Nexium as well as a couple of other prescriptions for nausea and such. No more than 10 minutes after he took the Nexium, he felt almost perfect; a little shaky in the stomach still, but the pain was gone, as was the strong nausea. MY fear was that he had a gallstone attack, which of course would eventually result in surgery, and he isn't insured yet. We can't figure out what would have brought on the gastritis, unless this sounds like a recipe for it: that night, we went out to eat, and he had a burger. Later on, we had fast food, which was a fried chicken sandwich. He had SEVERAL Crown Royal and Cokes that night. And in general he tends to drink a lot of soda. Does all this sound like it could cause at least acute gastritis? If his problem were actually something worse like gallstones or pancreatitis, would the Nexium have helped him at all? more

Resolved Question: Can taking MDMA cause a reoccurance of pancreatitis? What is the toxicity of MDMA compared to a alcohol binge?

I am a 24 y/o male who has had two episodes of acute pancreatitis due to alcohol abuse, the most recent episode being about none months ago. I have stopped drinking and started living a healthier life style. I have used ecstasy before the last time being over three years ago. My question: is it likley that ingesting ecstasy by it's self will cause a recurrance of acute pancreatitis? Also I have binged on alcohol since having pancreatitis and it has not caused an episode of pancreatitis. I am wondering what is toxicity of MDMA compared to alcohol? I am aware of most of the other health concerns with using ecstasy and I'm sure some of you will think I'm crazy for even thinking about it, but I need to know so I don't land myself in the hospital again. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: What could be wrong with him, want to be prepared. Going to the vet at 2pm?

MAIN SYMPTOMS: Poops in his crate every time we leave. (Has done this since he was 9 weeks old) Pants really hard, a lot. (Doesn't matter how cold I have the room and I have it pretty cold, I'm pregnant) His heart is always racing it seems, when you pick him up you can feel it pounding so heart. The throwing up in his crate everytime we leave. (Even if we just leave him 15 minutes) Thats gone on since Sunday. Very very hyper and nervous acting. Constantly pacing, humping things, or hiding. He has always been an antisocial dog. He has always been irritable, never easy to get along with. We thought the humping was him trying to prove dominance but discovered it was actually a nervous behavior in him. My husband, myself, and our Terrier are all very laid back individuals but our Poodle has always been very high strung. I'm starting to wonder if there is something more going on than Anxiety. What do you think? Someone mentioned hyperthyroidism, but I certainly hope that is not the case. Because its rare in dogs and if they do have it its usually caused by a form of cancer. I so thought we were in the clear with him. We were about to Celebrate his 2nd birthday. Something we were never sure we would see: HIs first healthy birthday ___________________________________ BACKSTORY: okay my dog has been having some of this behavior since he was a puppy. Well since his first night with us. His first vet ruled it as Seperation anxiety. We took all the proper measures to keep him calm and work with him on it. We even went as far as getting another dog so he had a companion and that helped a whole lot. But lately things seem worse. At a year of age he was diagnosed with Acute pancreatitis, but it wasn't long before it was rule a Misdiagnosis. New vet did actual tests on him, unlike the old vet and said that dog doesn't have it. (Becuase he had a few flair ups after that iniatial one and there was no sign of it) Turned out he had a parasite but that was cleared up. They have checked his thyroid in the past and the results have been a little off from normal, but never enough to be too concerned about it. Now he has always pooped in his crate whenever we would leave him but now he is throwing up his kibble, pretty much undigested. In his crate when we leave He seems nervous whether we are home or not. I dont get it. He typically is only crated or left alone maybe an hour a day. Sometimes up to two hours. I'm a housewife, soon to be stay at home mom so its not like he lacks attention or anything ThanksHe has always had a hard time keeping his weight. He never drinks a lot. Since throwing up the last 3 days (I time per day, when we left him and it was undigested kibble) he has lost a little weight Thats why we are taking him inHe is in the crate maybe 30 minutes a day at the most an hour. Again I am a housewife and he is in there when I go to run errands. I think its more than anxiety, we've done everything by the book, we've tried calming agents. We've worked with a vet and trainer on the anxietyHe has never had an issue with the crate itself. He slept in it up until about 6 months ago. Its just if we leave he poops and throws up in it. And he is 2 years old now by the wayAGain he is 2 years old and up to date on all vaccines. No I don't have a stool sample or any of the vomit. I cleaned it up, He hasn't vomited today and he already pooped this morning which is in the poopy bin now. We live in an apartment more

Resolved Question: Sister has Acute Pancreatitis.Questions? 10 POINTS GUARANTEED!?

Your Question My sister has Acute Pancreatitis.Questions? 10 points guaranteed.? My 38 year old sister has been in a LOT of pain for the last week eventually causing her to be rushed to hospital in a MICA, Mobile Intensive Care Ambulance. They ONLY send these when people are critically ill. My nephew who was with her said she was in so much pain that it was causing her ECG to alter to the point where they thought with the chest pain and heart changes she was having a heart attack! My sister NEVER takes ANY PAIN MEDICATION but was in so much pain she didn't object this time. They pumped 20mg of IV Morphine into her and only then did her pain ease enough. I've never seen her like that. Neither had my nephew. For almost the last week no one could work out what had caused the Pancreatitis as she doesn't drink or smoke or have diabetes. And there is no gallstones. Until a lot of research uncovered a rare side effect from a new medication she was on for insomnia. A very LOW DOSE of Seroquel. There are law suits our there on the EXACT thing that's happened to my sister! She won't sue. She's not like that. But when I told her she was defiantly upset!!! By the way she's STILL in hospital & being pushed to take her prescribed pain meds as her pain is still pretty bad. But better than what it was. She SHOULD be home in the next few days on pain meds. Then it's up to me & my nephew to get her to take them! Hum! LOL But I really want to hear from anyone with any information you might be able to give me on the; Seroquel? Pancreatitis? Your own experiences on Seroquel and/or Pancreatitis? Anyone you know who's had it? How are they/you now? Anything really. Sorry for length. Resolved Question: Which food is best for these dogs? Looking to do rotational diet?

A minature Poodle and a Terrier mix. Minature poodle does have some food allergies such as corn, he can't tolerate corn. Some other minor things. Anyways they currently eat California Naturals Herring and Sweet Potato. (My Terrier eats it but she hates it, she prefers the chicken....My poodle won't touch the chicken. So we get the herring) My dog (poodle) did suffer from Acute Pancreatitis about a year ago. Anyways we are very happy with California Naturals but I read it good to sometimes rotate? So I was wondering what foods would be best to rotate with considering my poodles past issues. I'm looking for two other types of food to rotate with.....What do you suggest? Can barely afford the food they have. Thank goodness 25 dollars a month feeds them. 1 bag lasts my 2 dogs a month So feeding them two different foods is not an optionWith the new baby and all we are just on a tight budget right now....so they both have to eat the same food. I was told by a vet as well that rotational diet is best for a dog. But he could be wrong. I like them on CN Herring and Sweet Potato. I feel its the best food for them. They have shiny coats, they are healthy, Firm stools more

Resolved Question: Anyone have experience with a cat with pancreatitis?

I tried to ask this question a few hours ago, but got nothing but stupid and irrelevant answers, so I'm trying again. Maybe the time of the day I asked was when all the intelligent people weren't on their computers. So, here goes one more try: My three-year old kitty, Cookie, has been very healthy all her life and I've always fed her high-quality food. She's never been sick even once. However, she very suddenly got really sick a few days ago and I took her to a 24-hour emergency pet hospital. They kept her for a few days and while she was there, they determined that she had pancreatitis. They treated her for it and she got much better, to my relief. When I picked her up yesterday, the doctor talked to me and told me that she'll have to be on a special prescription-only diet for the rest of her life. I've done some research on the internet, though, and some of what I've read has led me to believe that with an acute case of pancreatitis, a special diet is required only for a couple of weeks. I want to do what's best for her, but I'm just not sure if that prescription diet is really necessary for the rest of her life, and since it's pretty expensive, I don't want to spend the extra money unless I have to -- of course I will if it means that she really does need it. I just wonder if anyone here has had experience with this and can offer some insight. more

Resolved Question: Raw Diet....bad for my dog? How do when know if he can use it.?

My dog suffered from what was believed to be acute pancreatitis. And he has never had a great immune system. He has been doing wonderful on California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato......firm poos and no sick vet visits in almost 10 months. (Its made by the same people that make innova) His first two years he was constantly at the vet. They tried putting him on Science Diet crap and then that I/D. Well it has corn in it and he can't handle corn. So I pulled him off of it and did a bunch of research and determined California Naturals was the right choice for him, so I found the only store in the area that sells it. And he has been on California Naturals since last December....and on Herring since March. We have a new vet now and I asked him about Raw Diet and he said since my dog has had such a weak immune system, its getting better. He would not be able to fight off any of the bad bacteria in a raw diet and he could get very sick. I was thinking of having my other dog on a raw diet but since he can't be on it it would get really expensive feeding one on Raw and the Other on Kibble So how would we know if his immune system will ever be good enough for raw? (The old vet wanted me to isolate him inside from the rest of the world because of his immune system. Well I couldn't do that to him, I know there was a risk having him in the outside world, I knew he could get sick but I wanted him to have a full life. Well he has improved tremendously and the new vet said that he would never have improved this much had I kept him isolated like the old vet suggested) Again: So how would we know if his immune system will ever be good enough for raw?I probably will stick with the California Naturals regardless since we've been advised against raw. I mean its the only food our poodle has ever eaten and been willing to eat without a fuss. He really likes it and so does our terrier. Its more of a curiosity thing really more

What was the cause of yours? Did you have any cysts? Do you know what the chances of it being caused by cancer? (32 yr old male) How were you diagnosed and how long did it take to get that diagnosis? Do you lose weight other than from eating better? The person I am speaking of has sharp cramping pains in upper abdomen. Pains seem to be better when eating low fat diet and no spicy foods. The person has diarrhea. Also when pain is bad feels like it is in the back as well. He also has an umbilical hernia right now. For the past week or so I have had a mild burning/pulling sensation on the left side of my abdomen right underneath my rib cage. The pain comes and goes and seems to wrap around to my back. It also feels like it's "full" on that side of my abdomen. A little history about me: Used to drink pretty heavily for 5-6 years. 32 years old/female No other symptoms of chronic pancreatitis Never had an acute attack of pancreatitis I think I'm mainly worried b/c of my previous acohol use. If it's not chronic pancreatitis, what do you think it could be? more

Resolved Question: A friend of mine got acute pancreatitis and is still drinking?! What will get her to stop?

So a friend, who has always partied pretty hard since she was in her teens, got an attack of acute pancreatitis in her early twenties and was in the hospital for a few days last year. She acted like it wasn't a big deal (it's what brought her into the hospital), and focused on the operation she had to have at the same time (a number of benign [thank goodness] growths removed from her ovaries). The thing is, she hasn't stopped drinking. Both her and her husband love to drink together. Maybe she drinks less (I'm not entirely sure), but wouldn't drinking any amount of alcohol increase the chances of it reoccuring? She did get married last year, and I noticed that at the events she drank quite a lot too and even her mother didn't say anything?! I was pretty surpised. About a month after the operational I saw her drinking, and asked if it was ok for her to drink. She said, "not really" and laughed it off. Recently, her and her hubby were joking/bragging about all the stupid things they did while drunk. They both seem to really like attention, but she especially seems to consider herself the life of the party. Almost everytime I visit her she has a drink. And they're headed to Vegas....ahh! So my question is, what really can I do? My husband and I are only a few years older than her and her hubby, but we are overall, pretty different from them (we don't drink much or often, go out sometimes but enjoy our quiet evenings together too). But I feel like if I talk to her about it, she just won't take me seriously and even say that I'm getting in the way of her fun or something. She's a good person, but can be pretty immature sometimes, especially if she's drinking. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thank you! more

Resolved Question: Does this sound like Pancreatitis (again)?

4 1/2 months ago I was hospitalized with Acute Pancreatitis due to a gall stone blocking the Pancreatic duct. I was very sick and I had to stay in the ICU for a few days until the inflammation died down enough to perform a Gallbladder removal. Everything went great with the surgery. And I thought I was one of the "lucky" ones to have a Gallbladder removal without having the complications afterward. I heard so many horror stories of digestive problems, pain, diarrhea, etc. I've had none of that, except for one small problem. After eating anything that is even a little rich or fatty, I still have this dull gnawing feeling in the middle of my upper abdomen where I think my Pancreas is. It feels like a milder version of what I had before. I just don't understand why I would still be having problems with my Pancreas though? I don't drink alcohol on a regular basis (maybe once a year) and I think I am quite healthy otherwise. Does this sound like Chronic Pancreatitis? And where would it come from? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: How do I get my boyfriend to understand that his drinking is going to kill him?

While I am almost sure that my boyfriend is not an alcoholic, seeing as he doesnt seem to go through any withdrawal if he doesnt drink and it isnt affecting his job or anything, I know he has a drinking problem. A year ago he was hospitalized for acute pancreatitis (for the second time). He stopped drinking for a while, then it was just beer, now he drinks beer at least 4 nights a week, and i find that i cant keep any alcohol, wine or liquor, in the apartment without him drinking it. I have to either write a note on it to not drink it or hide it. Everytime i bring up that i don't think he should be drinking so much, he gets mad at me. He is 27 and the doctor says he he gets pancreatitis again, he could very likely die. I am so scared. What can I do?! more

Resolved Question: Had an Attach of Acute Pancreatitis? Do you still drink?

Are there people out there who have had an attack of Acute Pancreatitis, but continue to drink alcohol? If so, I would like to hear from them how long they have been drinking after they had pancreatitis, what quanity and how often and whether they developed CHRONIC pancreatitis because of it. I had a bout of acute pancreatitis recently the cause of which was attributed to alcohol abuse. My doctor has forbidden me to drink alcohol even occasionally, say once a week. Your honest input will be of great help.Nobody has told me Pancreatitis would affect liver. If may affect kidney and lungs, but not liver. Is Sammyjojo really talking about pancreatitis or some other condition such as cirrhosis of liver caused by alcohol abuse? more

Resolved Question: Just a few dog questions related to Health and training. Please advice?

First of all what can I do to continue to boost my Zackies immune system (it was wiped out after being on so many antibiotics)? Second of all Training: He didn't get to participate in puppy classes like our other dog due to being under the weather so much. He knows all the basic commands of the beginner class (infact he is better at it then the dog we had in classes). Anyways I trained him at home. Would he be required to take the beginner class or can he go on to intermediate? (We go through petco) Either way would be fine i mean if he has to go through beginner he would have a better chance at socialization.....he didn't get as much as we would have liked him to early on. I just wanted to give an update on Zackie He is doing so well and he is so happy. He is just living his life an having fun. It appears that his last illness was not a flair up of pancreatitis but was all related to the parasite he had. So that means he has only ever had one flair up of pancreatitis. (the acute) He is happy and well and he is looking forward to going on vacation in a few weeks. This will be his first trip to the Smokey Mountains. And his first time ever staying in a hotel. Thank you all for your support and help (By the way his immune system is compromised so yes he can get sick easier then most dogs but he can't get other dogs sick.......but his immune system is slowly recovering it seems)ADD: The vet suggested we keep him isolated and not let him around other dogs or let him get out much but what kind of life is that. I would rather him have a full life and it be shorter than a long life and be miserable and sad. I decided early on when he got sick that I was going to let him live and not shelter him just because he was more fragile than other dogs (I know some people might think that I'm not doing whats in his best interest but I want him to live life. and that is what he is doing. He has already traveled many times and it seems life has already treated him well. He is almost 2 now)Shelter pups: Thanks I am looking for all natural ways to boost his immunity I will try those (he has been on too many meds in his young life)Canine Caretaker: I am looking to try to start him in intermediate. You see our other dog did beginner and I taught this one at home due to his immune system. But I just want to try to put him in intermediate because it would be a waste to stick him in beginner when he already knows it. Our other dog is about to start intermediate and then she goes on to advancedADD: Shelter pups: It was just acute pancreatitis but he gets sick a lot not because of pancreatitis but because all the antibiotics he has been on wiped out his immune system and so he picks up little things. He doesn't have Chronic pancreatitis he just had that one flair up originally. He is on a montly heartworm pill: Heartguard (I trust this one the most) more

Resolved Question: Can Creon cause a false positive for acute pancreatitis?

I was prescribed Creon 20 for what my doctor thinks may be chronic pancreatitis. I'm wondering... if I've taken this medicine recently and go to the hospital for an attack, will my bloodwork look as though I'm having acute pancreatitis? Or will the enzyme levels be too high (or low) for them to think that? Or will they be able to tell that it's a medicine and not my own elevated enzyme levels? I've been instructed to take three capsules before each major meal and two capsules before each snack. I'm wondering also... how long after I swallow the capsules will the enzymes be detectable in my blood? I'm just a little worried about some things. Nobody seems to know the answer to these questions, so if you do, please help me out! Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Sick dog....need to inform breeder but can't find the breeder......what to do?

Okay so I got my poodle from a breeder when he was 9 weeks old Okay so she really wouldn't qualify as a breeder but this was before we knew what back yard Breeders and hobby breeders were. Anyways both vets said that his parents never should have been bred together. You see first issue he had was one of his testicles didn't want to drop....luckily it did before he was neutered. And the other issue is....right at a year of age he was diagnosed with Acute Pancreatitis and now he is a year and a half and that has progressed into Chronic. Once again we were told his parents never should have been bred together. Well his illness has been costly but I don't care we will do whatever it takes to keep him happy and healthy. But should we continue to try to locate his "breeder" and let her know this and warn her against breeding those two dogs together again. We have tried to locate her but we don't remember her name all we know is the town he came from. I don't even know if she would listen if we did find her...we have been trying to track her down. (His sibling was stillborn so he was the only puppy of the litter) What should I do shoud I keep trying? Or just let it go at this point and hope she doesn't breed again.....(her dog almost died in the process so she said she may not breed again) What should I do? By the way the vet believes this is inherited because of his young age and the fact that we have kept him strictly on his dog food his whole life....(never any table scraps) Though poodles are prone to this What if we can't find the breeder.....I mean we've been looking for 6 months now. We don't have her info.....we didn't end up registering him because the breeder messed up the paperwork (we found that our after sending his registration forms in which had all her info) Should we keep trying....ADD: She just needs to know never to breed those two dogs together again....They contacted us (and we decided not to pursue it this was when he was a pup....they never sent the paperwork back....it was ckc continental kennel club) I will always get from a reputable breeder from now on now that I knowThis was just a lady who bred her two poodles out of her home......my mother in law found the dog for us in the local paper in her old town........we drove 4 hours to get him. He is our first dog... (Our other dog we adopted from a rescue) more

Resolved Question: Medical question about acute pancreatitis and alcohol level.?

Hello. I recently was arrested for a DUI, however the amount of alcohol that I had that evening could not have equaled what the BAC tester registered. It was .22. My questions is... Voting Question: Acute pancreatitis with ARDS and ARF. BP unstable, chances?

My mother in law was admitted to the ICU on 1/1/2008. With acute pancreatitis, on day 2 she showed acute renal failure and acute respiratory distress syndrome. She is on the respirarator with 100% oxygen mix, PEEP of 10 and gas exchange of only 37%. Hooked to dyalisis and hemofiltration. Today she received a blood transfusion. CatScan yesterday revealed a massively inflamed pancreas that is filling with fluid the ventro-toraccic cavity and sourronding organs. BP is very unstable with wild changes, Heart rate sometimes goes up to 130 bpm and BP falls to 65/45 at times. She was paralyzed and fully sedated. She seems to be hanging there against many pesimistic prognosis from Doctors. Could anybody explain to me please what can we frankly expect? I can take it, don't be affraid. It's my wife that will not take it so easy but I need to kno what could I be facing. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Can you give me some advice on my dog?

My dog woke up at one with Diareaha. And he still has it a bit this morning but with constipation. I know exactly what caused it too. He has a tendency to jump from the floor to the kitchen table and somebody left the bowl of Chipotle Chip Dip we made on the table.....he got maybe 3 or 4 licks of it. and I knew it would cause an issue. I have vet on speed dial and I'm on hold with them right now. If you need to know whats in the dip its: Mayonaise, Sour Cream, and Chipotle Seasoning. I'm pretty sure it burns as much coming out as it did going in, it upset my tummy too. Like I said he only got about 3 or 4 licks and after the last one he looked at me as I was coming over to pull him off like WTF was that stuff. He did not like it. My concern is two things: he isn't much of a drinker. He drinks a little at a time so I'm sure he gets what he needs but I feel he needs to drink more if he is having the poopies like this. Is there a way to trick him into drinking more? I don't want him to dehydrate And two, he was diagnosed about 4 months ago with Acute Pancreatitis and almost died but it got cleared up. And I know if he were to get it again it would be a life long battle.........they don't get people food and I'm upset that someone left the bowl on the table. He is only a year old. Will this trigger it? I'm asking both these questions to the vet. but wanted some insight. ThanksHe is a minature poodle by the way. And like I said I'm waiting for the vet (she is with a patient)Also he is acting completely normal other than the poopies he did nip at me a bit when I tried to clean up his backside but he doesn't like anyone back thereNo he is drinking like I said he never drinks very much, atleast not nearly as much as my other dog but she is a good 12 pounds bigger than himWe were told he doesn't need to go in because we know what caused it but if he stops drinking and it keeps us she said call back. Also when I say constipation and diahreha the thing is he got outside and had a real hard time going and then all sudden all this liquid poo came.....he was scrunched up for quite a while. more

Voting Question: Anyone ever have idiopathic (no known cause) acute pancreatitis?

Has anyone ever been diagnosed with idiopathic (no known cause) acute pancreatitis? Were you in the hospital? For how long? What procedures did you receive, if any? What kind of diet did your doctor put you on? Anything else? Our story: About a month ago my 30-year-old husband was hospitalized for 12 days with a pretty bad bout of acute pancreatitis for which they can't find a cause (idiopathic). His lipase was off the chart (and the chart goes to 20,000!). After he was released, his gastroenterologist put him on a low-fat diet (no more than 45 grams per day) and told him absolutely no alcohol for at least 4-6 months. So what's your story? more

Resolved Question: What is the life expectancy of someone with chronic pancreatitis?

I have had pancreatitis 5 times in the last 3 years. I'm 30 years old and Dr.'s can't find the cause. The diagnosis is acute but based on what I have read it could be chronic or could be chronic very soon. I've had a stint placed in my pancreatic duct, my gallbladder removed and it still flares up. Resolved Question: amylase and lipase can anyone tell me why they are rising?

my husband was discharged home from hoapital 2 weeks ago with amylase of 322 and lipase of 256. he has been diagnosed of chronic pancreatitis. his amylase levels keep rising it was 345, then 696 then fell to 465 now its 800. he has little pain in the stomach too. he is very scared of having another acute attack. can anyone help us? what is the best way to affront this? is there any remedy? or he should go back for intravaneous feeding? he really doesnot want to go back to hospital. he spent 3 months there already. and he is really frightened. has anyone such levels? he is on a low fat diet and eats barely nothing. so, what can be the cause of the rising amylase levelsthe pain is not acute but we are scared it might he might get it beacuse of the amylase levelshe is not drinking but has been smoking 6 to 10 cigarettes a day, he eats spicy foods too and sometimes oranges and lemonhe is not drinking but has been smoking 6 to 10 cigarettes a day, he eats spicy foods too and sometimes oranges and lemon more

Resolved Question: What if a drug is not listed to cause a problem until 'after market' reporting?

I got severe acute pancreatitis a couple of weeks ago, which often results in chronic pancreatitis when it is severe (mine was!), and do not fall under the categories of what causes it. I'm a moderate drinker, no family history, no trauma to the pancreas, no gallbladder problems. It does list some drugs as a cause, but not Lamictal, which I have been on for nearly a year, as well as recent use of Naproxin. A few weeks ago, my Lamictal was raised from 150m to 200m. A little research on the internet shows that Lamictal and Naproxin is listed as a potential side effect, although not made public or on their fact sheet, since reports of it being a potential side effect were not established until 'after marketing' (after FDA approval and marketed to the public) and the company says not enough data exists to establish causation, but has been reported in cases of pancreatitis. Is there a potential lawsuit here, since pancreatitus is potentially fatal, and causes lifelong possible complications (kidney failure ..., heart failure and damage to other organs) as well as permanent lifestyle changes (diet, no fat, no sodium, etc)? It often leads to other attacks that are very painful and disabling for several days to weeks, which is lifelong. It's listed as a potential side effect even on their own 'cached' website, as well as drugs.com, rx.com, etc.  more

Resolved Question: Will things ever get easier. My dog is sick and so young (please I need some support)?

Okay My 1 year old toy poodle was diagnosed with acute pancreatitis on Tuesday. He will be fine. And able to go back on his normal food in a few days and they treated him with antibiotics. What I don't get is He eats strictly dog food. No people food no table scraps and he got this. Well then I read that Poodles are genetically predisposed to Pancreatitis and other liver problems. We've been told in the past his parents never should have been bred together. He had one testicle that refused to drop (but finally did) and he has the worst repiratory allergies. But he was supposed to be here because he has touched so many lives. He saved my grandfather. But then I have a mutt and she is the healthiest dog I've ever met and obviously her parents never should have been bred together because she is a mutt but it happened and she is very healthy (how can you say a purebred is badly bred but not a mutt) I just hate that he has been sick and I'm scared that this is going to be a pattern. I will always care for him and make sure he gets the proper health care but I just don't get how this dog, a wonderful dog and one of the best dogs in the world could have problems. They feel this pancreatitis is probably the root of a lot of his small issues but he is so young. I'm starting to wonder if maybe something was really wrong with the other pup in his litter (the other pup was still born) Obviously my boy is a fighter. (I just hope the breeder never breeds those two dogs together again. We've been told this time and time again) Its hard though because he is loved by so many. Not just family and friends but anyone who had met him. I just need some support ThanksMy husbands grandmother found him at a breeder and assured us that he was coming from a good place. This was before we knew anything about BYBs I don't even remember the womans name. We drove 3 hours to get him.He has been having stomach issues for months and the last vet (before we moved) didn't really look into it too far and just gave him a pill for nausea and diahreaha and sent him home. The new vet atleast thought to look futher into the issue more

Resolved Question: Paging Dr. Gregory House?

So a friend of mine fell ill 2 weeks ago. It started with a fever and general malaise on a friday. Has dark urine and light stools. Sunday he gets urinalysis and the results were high bilirubin and urobilinogen. He goes to the ER looking awful still with a fever and shivering. I tell him he probably has gallstones and is going to end up getting his gall bladder removed. They draw tons of blood and by the end of the night the doctor tells him, with no diagnostics of course to back this up "you have fatty liver, gilbert disease (hereditary cause of high bilirubin), and a virus" and discharges him that sunday night. Tuesday morning hes back and checked in at the hospital in essentially quarantine. Still fever, vomiting, face all red, and hyphema (blood in the eye) presumably from straining from coughing and vomiting. Now apparently he has a high white blood cell count, and at least one doctor seems to think his 'rash' may be hepatitis, to which he wasn't vaccinated. They can't find any gallstones, so now I'm thinking Hepatitis B, after a few days it turns out the blood they took was supposed to be tested for all Hepatitis viruses, yet some ER person wrote Hep A on there, so he has so wait even longer for B and C to come back, though B is the only one that really causes this severe an acute illness. Days more go by and it turns out he has no hepatitis of any type, has been endoscoped and had gallstones ruled out. They did a CT of his pancreas, the results of which I'm not really privy to, particularly since trying to get complicated explanations from someone high as a kite on dilaudid isn't easy. They had him on metronidazole first then levofloxacin to cover bacteria. Also protonix for stomach acid and albuterol for breathing. He is still sick after two weeks and the final diagnosis seems to be "you have pancreatitis and a virus" - and that he can never drink alcohol again. The doctor further seems to think that my friend's admission of having had 2 or 3 drinks on the night before getting sick seems to explain everything. Also, my friend has a family friend in a different hospital with apparently the exact same illness right now. My question is what the hell might cause this? No gallstones, no hepatitis. He rarely drinks alcohol and doesn't binge. The viral causes I've seen for pancreatitis are Hepatitis (ruled out), mumps (makes no sense, and he had vaccine) and Epstein-Barr. His lack of any noticeable jaundice or perhaps most importantly - upper right abdominal pain - is quite odd also. Naturally since I was at the bar with him the night before he got sick, at the ER when he first went, and in his hospital room for coughing/vomiting, I'm a wee bit concerned. more

Resolved Question: am I crazy for thinking this?

hey people- I am still mourning the loss of my dog, Annie. It was a very hard blow to our family- we had her for 13 years and other than some UTIs, she hadn't been sick. She died from Acute Necrotizing Pancreatitis- she literally got sick one morning and died less than 24 hours later, despite being taken to the vet and to another emergency clinic (where she died) for overnight observation. I don't know if I am crazy or what but I didn't see her body. I saw "a body" wrap in a sheet given to us for burial, but I never actually got to see her. So, now, I keep thinking "that couldn't be her" and I almost feel like I am in this horrible dream I can't wake up from or that this is just some big cruel joke.
