Test For Pancreatitis Questions and Answers
Voting Question: How is acute pancreatitis diagnosed?
I was in the ER recently for severe acute pancreatitis. They took blood and when it came back said something about my liver... the nurse said that acute pancreatitis is diagnosed by that result. Unfortunately I was completely doped up on morphine and gravol and don't remember exactly what she said. Is the liver always affected in acute pancreatitis? I can't find anything about this online. What exactly would the blood tests have shown? I'm just wanting to read up more on it, as I'm weighing my options on gallbladder surgery (MRI and ultrasound showed no stones but the doctor feels that that's most likely what it is). I have an appointment on Wednesday. Thanks.
moreResolved Question: My husband's ALT level has been increasing for the past 2 weeks. It shot up to 400 & currently stands at 907?
He was on strong antibiotics for past 2-3 months and was being treated for intra-abdominal abscess. The docs stopped the antibiotics 3 days ago, and the last blood test (yesterday) shows:
ALT at 907 (increased from 739 on the last day on antibiotics)
AST at 240
Total billirubin at 64
His hepatitis B & C tests came back negative and the latest CT scan did not mention anything abnormal with the liver/pancreas.
He suffered acute pancreatitis in March 2010 but has recovered from it. Except for occasional dark yellow urine, he shows no other symptoms. What else could be wrong with him?Last CT scan was done on 8th July. Antibiotics were stopped on 9th and ALT level on that day was 739. He is currently on vitamins only, mainly Jetepar,Vitamin C, B Co, folic acid, Neurobion. He is also taking multivitamin and selenium tabs for the past 4 months. All these are under doctor's prescription.
He also mentions itchiness around the left side of his upper abdomen (from back to right under the left arm).
moreResolved Question: I've been having yellow stool/diarrhea.?
I had soft yellow stools for 2 weeks back in May/June, a couple weeks normal, and then yellow stools which have turned to diarrhea for the past four weeks. No pain except a little in my lower back, on my right side, for a couple of days, but it has resolved. I also have had a low-grade fever, between 99.1 and 99.9, for at least a month. And I have mild nausea when I wake up (I am not pregnant). I had three tests, one for E. coli, one for salmonella and one for white blood cells. All were normal. Also the blood test, for thyroid and something else I forget. I keep reading about pancreatitis. What is the likelihood? What else could it be?(Actually, it's mild nausea off and on throughout the day.)
moreVoting Question: Pancreatitis and liver issue...?
I am in the hospital ATM. I had a c-section four months ago. I started having severe pain that I couldn't detrmine whether it was in my upper stomach or back. Generally it was more noticable in my back and I figured it was from not being used to carrying a baby around 24/7. It would happen once every week or two, lasting between twenty minutes to several hours. It would often extend up into my right shoulder.
About two weeks ago I got what seemed like a bladder infection. I had a constant strong urge to pee, but could barely go, with a strong burning pain in my urethra after I emptied in my bladder. The pain this time was similar but in my lower back extending down my left hip. I vomitted constantly the first morning. I made a dr appointment but couldn't get in for two days. I started cranberry pills and everything went away, so I cancelled my appointment.
Thursday at 3ami woke up to severe pain in my upper right abdomen and radiating across my upper back. For 30 hours I threw up everything I ate within an hour. I sat in the shower off and on that entire night until 7 because sitting down and leaning forward with hot water hittingmy back was the only thing relieving the pain at all. I tried to get into my doctor but they told me to see if I could tough it out until the nextmorning or else go to the ER if it got too bad. The pain dulled enough friday that I decided to tough it out until the next morning as they suggested. 3am that night and I was up again vomitting and with pain so severe I couldn't take it anymore and went to the ER.
The pain was going across my entire upper abdomen at this point. The right side hurt with the lightest touch. They ordered bloodwork and I then waited in triage for 4.5 hours. Finally the pain got so bad that my lip was quivering trying to hold tears back, I felt like I had to puke but it hurt too much, and it was painful to take the smallest breath... I couldn't take a full one.
Finally a nurse listened to me, after a half hour of begging. My blood results had been in for hours but no one looked at them. The nurses were just sitting at their desks the entire time, even napping. She looked at my results, thinking I was just botching formothing and said "ooo this isn't good..."
I was taken right back and put on morphine and antibiotics. I was told it's pancreatitis. They did an ultrasound but no stones were found. My blood pressure has dropped since I've been in (I normally have high blood pressure) to 95/69. My urine has been amber in colour. I feel extremely tired and light-headed. They said my liver is also all out of whack. They said they person to do the test with a camera shoved down your throat is on vacation... So I'm getting an MRI instead whenever they schedule it...
I'm just really freaked outbecause they don't know the cause (I also don't drink or do any drugs) and my liver is also fucked up now. I told them thyroid disease runs in my family but they haven't tested for that. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be worrying?Sorry for all the weird typos; I had to type this up on my iPod.Thanks. No I do not have a fever although I feel like I do- but it was probably from the pain. I do know that my liver is not working properly and the blood tests also showed my pancreas is inflamed but the cause is unknown as no gallstones were found and I've never had a drink in my life. Is this really serious? I'm just scared because of my four month old..
moreResolved Question: THIS IS MY COLLEGE APPLICATION ESSAY, IS IT READY TO BE SENT TO COLLEGES?
I would like to share with you something about my current medical situation. Ordinarily I would not do so, as I am an intensely private person, but I now accept that my physical limitations have quite possibly impacted my high school performance in a negative manner, and I feel that it is only fair that you have this information. Therefore, I am reluctantly going to allow access to information that I would never, otherwise, speak of.
For the past several years, I have been afflicted by a physical situation that has sometimes interfered with my ability to focus, both in the classroom and out. I do not wish to be too specific about the symptoms of my disease, except to say that they are digestive in nature and sometimes require me to spend long periods of time in the Mens Room. Despite my terrible discomfort, I refused to accept that there might be something wrong with me, and would not seek treatment. I know now that I should have been less determined to suffer in silence and more willing to accept help. Finally, my parents insisted on bringing the matter to the attention of a physician. I was tested, over a period of several weeks, for colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, intestinal obstructions, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, Heliocobacter pylori (commonly known as ulcer), celiac sprue (commonly known as wheat allergy), lactose intolerance, gallstones, bile duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis (the narrowing of the bile ducts), “Sphincter of Oddi” dysfunction and pancreatitis. You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases.
Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is sometimes known as spastic colon, nervous colon, nervous stomach, mucous colitis and spastic colitis, and is distinguished by abnormal bowel habits, such as diarrhea (loose stools), constipation or sometimes, as in my own case, both. It is well known to experts in this field that periods of stress can intensify the severity of IBS. I have certainly found my busy schedule of six honors/AP classes, Varsity field hockey, swimming and track teams, performing lead roles in three consecutive Spring Musicals, volunteering at the local animal shelter, tutoring at-risk children, and working three evenings a week plus all day Saturday at The Gap to be, at times, stressful, but of course it is impossible to say what has caused me to be afflicted with this very horrible syndrome.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or spastic colon) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause.[1] In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements.[2] Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI), a stressful life event, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators.
Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important.
Several conditions may present as IBS including celiac disease, Fructose malabsorption,[3] mild infections, parasitic infections like giardiasis, several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation, and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system.
IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients. But it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, and it increases a patient's medical costs, and contributes to work absenteeism. Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS, in conjunction with increased costs produces a disease with a high societal cost. It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer's life.
In fact, doctors do not know what causes IBS, or why people who share my disease feel the need to have a bowel movement soon after eating, causing diarrhea, or why the prolonged spasm of the large intestine causes stool to stay in one area for too long and get dried out, resulting in small hard stools (constipation). As of today, palliative treatments are only in the experimental stage, and the hard truth is that there is no cure for IBS.
It has been very difficult for me to accept this diagnosis at my young age
moreResolved Question: My dog has been diagnosed with pancreatitis, is he going to be ok? (Help needed!!)?
My 8 yr old mongrel had 2 rotten teeth and went to the vets on Monday to have them pulled out. He hasn't been eating properly for about a month, and has been even worse since we got him home from the teeth extraction. We took him back to the vets, and she was extremely concerned about him not eating.
She is keeping him in overnight, on a drip because apparantly he is dehydrated. They have done a blood test, which has shown pancreatitis. They are doing another test in the morning and if that is not useful, they are going to do an ultrasound. Unfortunately, my mum and I found a big tumour on his chest about a week ago, which I'm not sure is anything to do with it.
Is my dog going to be ok? We had another dog diagnosed with this, and she was put to sleep the day after. My dog eats an extremely healthy diet (the BARF diet) He is our much loved family pet, and I would really like some advice from someone.
Thanks. Thanks for the great answers everyone :)

moreResolved Question: What causes a false positive on tumour marker?
My 35-year-old husband was recently in the hospital with pancreatitis. They did an ultrasound, mri, ct scan and found that his pancreas was inflamed. Most recently, they did some blood tests looking for tumour markers. We got the results yesterday and the doctor said he was perplexed; while, he said, a mark of 70-80 would be high, my husband's was an astonishing 2000. As he isn't fatigued or losing weight, not nauseous, etc... and has only a sore back as a symptom, all the doctor could say was that he'd have to investigate further as it didn't make sense. Of course I am still terrified. Has anyone had experience with a false positive and knows what else could cause such a result? The doctor mentioned perhaps auto-immune pancreatitis but my husband isn't jaundiced either so it didn't really look like that was the case. Thank you in advance.

moreVoting Question: Why? Placed on Cymbalta while suffering from liver damage?
My husband has a lot of health problems: MS, liver problems (extremely high liver test results, fatty liver diagnosis, and uncertainty about how much damage has been done), alcoholism, pancreatitis, and diabetes. He is really a mess...and went to a psychotherapist due to severe depression. The psych had him sign a release for info from his medical doc and then a few weeks later put him on Cymbalta. My husband is actually doing great on this medication but I just found out online that Cymbalta is known to cause liver damage and should not be used by patients with this diagnosis.
So...I'm wondering what this means. Did the psych not read my husband's medical records? They clearly show he has liver problems and is a heavy drinker. When I call the psych's office, they won't talk to me about my husband's situation at all. I get why...but i'm very puzzled. My husband is in denial about so many things, including this situation, and doesn't want to screw with possibly losing this new medication which seems to really help him.
I don't know what to do.
moreResolved Question: Anyone have experience with Colitis in dogs?
I have a one year old Great Dane that has had chronic stomach issues for months now. Nothing I've tried has eliminated the problem and I've spent almost $1000 at the vet's and haven't found a solution that will work yet. His symptoms are intermittent loose stools, lack of appetite and weight loss. Some days he eats and poops normally and then he goes through phases for a few days where he doesn't want to eat much and wakes me up in the night to go out.
I have wormed him (with Pyrantel pamoate) and treated him for whip worms (with Ivermectin) just in case, but he's had 3 negative fecal samples done at the vet's advice so I really don't think there is any chance that it is parasites. He had a blood work up that came back normal. Then the vet did another blood panel to test for Pancreatitis which also came back normal. The vet then said he thought it was Colitis and sold me Hill's WD prescription dog food. The first ingredient in this food is corn and it just made my dog poop 5 x more than he normally does and he seemed to lose more weight. I hate to act like I know better than a vet, but the WD formula is used for dogs that need to lose weight. My dog is already extremely skinny and not eating well. That doesn't make sense to me to give a skinny dog a diet formula. The vet said he was prescribing it because Colitis can be helped by a high fiber diet. Does anyone know of a good way to add fiber to the diet other than the prescription food? I have my dog on Blue Buffalo Salmon and Potato formula right now. He seems to have gained a pound or two back, but he's still having stomach issues. He's developing bumps on his muzzle also so now I'm wondering if he's having a reaction to something in that food. Does anyone have experience with Colitis or anything like this with their dogs? I'm open to any thoughts or suggestions. Thanks!@Shelter Puppies Rule - I did have him on a raw diet for 3-4 months. My other dogs did wonderfully on it, but my Dane still had stomach issues and it was difficult to get him to eat enough so he did not gain any weight.
moreResolved Question: Very rude Dr. I dont know what I should do? Please read :)?
Ok, This is going to be long but I really need some answers. Im so confused at what Im supposed to do. I began seeing a GI doctor in Jan. due to food not digesting, weight loss, and constant vomiting. After a few tests he decided I have Gastroparesis ( basically my stomach is slow at digesting food) He ordered an Upper Endoscope which showed everything was fine.
Before the test he was very rude to me. I told him I was in pain and had a history of pancreatitis. He basically yelled at me that he didn't think that I had that and immediately gave me the sedative to knock me out. When I woke up, He had wrote a script for Reglan and sent me home. The next morning I was in so much pain, my husband rushed me to the ER. They did blood work which reviled my liver enzymes were elevated. The CT scan came back normal. After 14 hours in the ER they admitted me. I was put on Dilaudid pain pump.
I was in the hospital for 18 days. No tests were ever done. They assumed I was there for the pain medicine. I couldnt get the Drs to listen to me. ( BTW Im 22 years old, and before this, I had NEVER taken anything stronger than a tylenol for pain) They let me lay in the hospital for 18 days without passing a BM, I was so uncomfortable, I was miserable. Finally, I got transferred by ambulance to a different hospital.
At the new hospital I had an ERCP procedure done and a stint placed into my pancreas ( They found I had a sphincter of the Oddi dysfunction). They put me on pancreas enzyme pills along with a list of other medicines. I started feeling great.
Now this past week, the pain has returned. Its been 2 months since my ERCP was done. Im on a durasegic pain patch to help with the pancreatitis but its just not helping the pain. My husband took me to the ER, the Dr gave me dilaudid script and told me to return if it didnt control the pain. So on Sunday I returned to the ER. ( Also I havent been able to keep ANYTHING down, becoming very dehydrated and weak. Ive lost 35 pounds in 2 months) After 10 hours in the ER My GI Dr wouldnt admit me, he wanted to talk to me 1st. Basically he said " I dont know what to do with you, you cant sit in the hospital for weeks on pain medicine. We arent finding anything wrong. If you want to lay around all the time why dont we just put you into a nursing home" He then sent me home to suffer.
Now heres the problem. This GI Dr is wanting to see me in 2 weeks. I really dont want to see him again. He didnt listen to me at my appointment in the 1st place. He made it seem like Ive been in chronic pain for 8 years which is not the case. I have had GERD for 8 years but not in pain. I just dont know what to do. Should I make an appointment and get crappy with him THEN switch Drs? Or should I just go and keep my mouth shut.

moreResolved Question: Getting Acute Pancreatitis- help...?
When I was 11 years old I was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. I had never had any alcohol in my life so that one is off the list. I had to have a nasogastric tube in me for 3 and a half days while on a IV and i wasn't allowed to be put back onto liquids for another two weeks. when i kept the water down they moved me onto food and eventually they let me out. in outpatients, i saw every specialist that i could and i had ever scan and test available including that for gallstones and billias slat, and its neither of them. I had numerous MRCP scans and ultrasounds, both showed nothing, my family and i also had a test done to see if this was hereditoy in my family or if i could give it to my children should i ever have any. the results said no. In the end they put me down to an UNKNOWN CAUSE. 4 years later (just a few weeks ago) I got acute pancreatitis again and then had a relapse after that, i had to go through the whole traumatic experience again with tubes, scans and an IV and i am now back at home recovering. in a few weeks i will have another MRCP scan. HOWEVER I NEED YOUR HELP
i know that these scans will just come up with nothing again, but i am very anxious to find out what causes this, anything at all apart from the mentioned above. If there are any nurses or doctors out there who could shed some possible light on this matter i would be very grateful. Right now i have been put on 15mg of lansoprazole to have everymorning before food. and i am on a BLAND diet. if that helps. also anyone who has been or is in a similar situation then please feel free to email me =]Also thanks to anyone who replys with sensible replys. I know that im not going to get a straight 'this is whats wrong with you' i just think you guys might have some ideas of your own that are not in books and that you will explain it better to me than a bunch of doctors who use way too many long and technical words that just give you a headache and make you not want to ask another question x
moreResolved Question: my cat has pancreatitis/pneumonia?
okay, so, i'm not an expert or anything in cat health. ALL of my cats have ALWAYS been healthy, therefore leaving me no reason to actually worry. until now.
i have a neutered male cat that's about 9 years old, who started, out of nowhere, to sleep a lot more than usual, lost a little weight, stopped eating so much, and didn't want anything to do with water, which he's always loved. after about a week of very little eating/drinking, and the same lack of energy, we took him in, the vet spent 5 minutes with him, took a blood/urine test, and the next day called and said he thinks oreo has pancreatitis. so, i went in, got clavamox (i'm pretty sure that's what it's called) and some of the science diet a/d stuff, which he was mildly interested in in the office.
came home, thought everything was fine. a couple days later he started breathing really funny, and coughing a lot. my mom called the next morning and we took oreo back in, getting an x ray this time, which showed a BUNCH of fluid in his lungs. right. he didn't say anything about the pancreatitis, or how he should be doing, but we got medicine (i don't know what this is called) that's supposed to help with the pneumonia and causes him to drink/pee more. yippee.
it's been about five days since then, and i'm taking him back in on monday, but there's been VERY little improvement. i've done research, and some people say that i'm supposed to force-feed him and others that say it's bad. i don't know what to do :/
so, i guess my overall question is, while he's drinking now, and peeing fine, what should i do about the food? the vet i go to i don't trust at all, and he's not helpful in the least. should i continue to force-feed him (i do about 1/4 a can at 7 am, spread that through the day, and 1/4 a can at 7 pm, spread through the night, along with both medicines at the same time), or should i commit him to the vet's for IV fluids and food fed right into the intestines or something similar? i don't want to hurt him - and i want him to recover; it hurts to see him so thin and not being able to really help him...
i don't want to put him down, either. i mean, if it's necessary because he's just going to die anyways from this, then... yeah... to ease his suffering, but... please don't suggest that. it isn't what i want to hear when there's a little hope for him left.
any answers are appreciated. thanks guys. (:he won't eat /anything/. we got the hills diet a/d stuff because that's all he showed any level of interest in. )x
that's kind of messed up. it probably suffered worse from the poisoning than it would have taking it to the vet to be euthanized. but that isn't my business. it's done with, right?
and i don't know if this is helpful but he hasn't had a fever at all, and he hasn't thrown up either, or had diarrhea... the only symptoms are the difficulty breathing, fluids in the lungs, anorexia/weight loss, and fatigue.
moreResolved Question: Does my sister have diabetes?
My sister, who is 26, went to the ER where she lives with severe stomach pains. They ran some blood tests that showed that her blood sugar was 407. They told her she was diabetic. My sister never had any symptoms of diabetes like my dad did before he found out he was diabetic. She never drank a lot of liquid or went to the bathroom a lot. Also the first tests showed she had pancreatitis. Then later tests showed up negative for that. Then the tests showed that her liver enzymes were extremely high. I also would like to know if it is normal for an ER to send someone home right away after they give an insulin shot with that high of blood sugar, and to tell her to wait till today to go see a doctor, she went in on Wednesday. The hospital doesn't sound like they know what they are doing, and my parents and I are extremely worried about her.

How can I find out if anyone has an insurance policy on me? I am curious as to how from sept to now I am in so much pain-agony words cannot describe-I am sorry I am not practiced at the art of short n sweet and keep emotion out of it-I have no clue where to turn, the hospital told me to see my doctor, the doctor wants his money (I don't blame him I just need to get to work so I can pay him
moreVoting Question: How dangerous are these blood test results?
My husband has a lot of health problems and most of it is because he is an alcoholic and has been continuing to drink heavily. He has fatty liver and pancreatitis.
Last week, his doc did a fasting blood test and we got the results yesterday: The main concerns were:
High triglycerides: 1100s
High blood sugar: 500s
High liver function numbers (don't have those figures..but those have been high for months)
High blood pressure: 160/90
So...the doc is waiting for two weeks and then wants to recheck his blood. One reason is because my husband didn't really fast. Apparently, he had a drink of some kind in the middle of the night when he was supposed to be fasting.
I suppose my question is can a mixed drink (like with orange juice or a beer) cause any of these numbers to spike during a fast? I'm especially wondering about the blood sugar number? Or is it so high that it wouldn't have mattered if he fasted or not?
I won't get into the fact that my husband MUST stop drinking. The doc and myself are making that clear to him but he seems to be in huge denial. That is another question, however, for another time.

I had failed my 1 hr test horribly. So my ob wanted me to do the 3 hr. On all of my levels I passed by 1.5-2 pts but the 3 hr draw I failed. So because of this my OB has placed me on the border. I got my results over the phone and go see him on the 21st. The nurse said he is going to talk to me about my diet. But my question is since I am so close to the border of having it, should I just go ahead and tell him to treat me as if I am one? I have 11 weeks left of my pregnancy and knowing my luck I will be diabetic before the end of it. I never developed this with my first pregnancy. So far with this pregnancy NOTHING has been going right for me. I developed anemia, pancreatitis, gall bladder disease and now this. The only thing left to go wrong would be my blood pressure. It's just so frustrating and starting to seem like nothing is going right!I am already on an extreme low fat diet, because of the gallbladder disease. Seriously how much more strict could it get?
moreResolved Question: Very dark brownish urine, what does it mean?
Hello,
This morning, I had really dark urine, very dark brown, almost black. I don't know what's wrong. I have in infection in my shoulder, taking injections now Tatrum. I've had liver malfunctioning, gallstones and chronic pancreatitis last year. I don't know if this is related, but thought I'd mention it, I went for a blood test this morning, for Liver functions. Waiting for the results. If anyone has an idea what this might be please do tell. I am a 23-year female by the way.
God bless,I have been drinking a lot of water, do I do not think it is dehydration. I already tested my liver functions, I am just waiting for the blood results. Hoope it is nothing serious! Could it be related to the shoulder infection though?Thank you all guys!
I got my blood results back... Liver functions are all normal except for the Bilirubin...
and MCH in the CBC (Complete Blood Count test)
MCH: 32.2 pg (Normal range: 27.00-31.00)
Total Bilirubin: 1.10 mg/dL (Normal range: Up to 1.00)
Direct Bilirubin: 0.40 mg/dL (Normal range: Up tp 0.25)
I've been googling this, and got many results with Gilbert's syndrome... I was born with jaundince and was kept at hospital for three days. I don't know if this is by any means related.
I guess I will wait until I finish my shoulder infection shots (3 more left) and I'll check mu urine afterwards.

moreVoting Question: chronic pancreatitis?
I have been dealing with Chronic for about 9 months now. I have had all the tests and what not and the doctor's still have no idea why it it happening. I am in the hospital at least 3 days a week. Lately I have been having serious pain in my kidney area along with the attacks. With all the research and talking to the docs about it I am at a loss. Seems like they have no idea what to do. I know this can be dangerous and life changing. Anyone know life expectancies. I am only 34 years old with no other problems. I don't drink, no gall bladder problems or anything like that. Any info would be greatfully helpful.
moreResolved Question: How is acute pancreatitis treated?
I've been asking a lot about this condition lately, and I'm sorry if it is starting to get old, but at 9pm at night, you don't have a lot of other sources to go to!
How should acute pancreatitis be treated? The reason I ask is because I have been recently diagnosed with it, however not treated, and my GP thinks I have been clinically neglected on the hospitals part, and even gave me a statement I could use if I wish to follow up a complaint for Clinical Negligence.
GP says given my medical tests, results and symtoms, that I should have been in hospital, on an intraveinous drip given fluids (Due to the dehydration caused by not being able to keep anything down- or in), and surgical intervention or at least consultation should have taken place.
Instead I was sent home with no medication, doctor at the hospital di not beleive it was pancreas related as (In his exact words) "It can not be the pancreas, as you do not drink alcohol or do drugs".
He said he consulted with the surgeon on call, but when asked what the sugeon said he would not say anything. He did not give us the surgeons name, and when we requested to see him, he said he was too busy.
Anyway, all of that aside, GP (Who has worked many E.Rs) says treatment should have been initiated based on my results, but obviously it wasn't.
I'm still having the same symptoms, so obviously it's not just a bug that's taking it's sweet time to pass.
How should pancreatitis be treated normally?
Thanks, and please no rude comments.

I had pancreatitis about 18 months ago. Since then the vitamins and supplements that I have always taken no longer work and give me energy.
I am currently low in my Vitamin D per tests. Other than Vit. D, I am taking Zinc Carnosine, Biotin, Probiotics and Pancreatic Enzymes for Leaky Gut Syndrome.
If I have Leaky Gut, how long will it take to heal?
Thanks.

moreResolved Question: Is this clinical negligence?
A week ago patient went to hospital with pain and nausea and was sent home and told to go to GP. Blood tests they took that day later confirmed acute pancreatitis, that was not treated.
GP is outraged and sends patient back to hospital for treatment.
Blood tests today reveal initial inflammation has subsided but symptoms still persist, since bloods are OK it is decided no treatment necessary and sent home again.
Was the first event clinical negligence?
moreResolved Question: Does anyone know anything about PANCREATITIS?
My dad had an incident where he suffered sever pain in his back and nausea last year but the doctors at the hospital couldn't figure out what was wrong with him so he left the hospital feeling normal soon after.
Months later he developed a strain around his back and abdomen and he went to see a doctor and he suggested it might be a problem with his prostate and he started taking medication for it.
Just recently he suffered a second incident which involved severe pain in his back and he collapsed (same thing as the first incident).
The doctors have diagnosed him with pancreatitis and steatorrhea. They think a gall stone has formed and is causing the problem.
But the thing is he's taken so many ultrasounds and tests and still don't know the real cause??
He's currently an outpatient and suffers from pain sometimes while he tries to recover at home.
Has anyone experienced this or has any advice???
My mother thinks it's cancer but I don't want anyone jumping to conclusions!
moreResolved Question: My Dad is an alcoholic? What should i do?
Ok, my Dad has been an alcoholic since I can remember. Due to his excessive drinking, he developed the disease Pancreatitis. Recently, we had a really bad scare. According to his wife, he got out of bed and had symptoms of a stroke. He went to the doctors after we forced him to by calling the police and his blood work came back really messed up. They made him come back for more testing and a full body scan (forgot what it's called). We were all thinking the worst, cancer or something along those lines and my dad was very scared. When the results came back, surprisingly, everything was fine. He had slight liver damage but was told it could easily be repaired if he changed his lifestyle. Fast forward two weeks... Last night, my dad shows up at my place, where me and my 4 month old son live drunk. I was so pist, it was like a huge slap in the face. So i told his wife today and she said she knew he was drunk yesterday too, that she could tell. She went home on her lunch break and told him that if he doesn't stop she's going to leave and told him what I said about how he was drunk last night. He texts me an hour later and tells me "Thanks" (meaning thanks for telling his wife, what she already knew!) And i told him "Thank youself." And then he went on to insult me and tell me to worry about my dead beat bf and blah blah blah. I simply told him he could insult me all he wants if it makes him feel better. I'm done caring about him because he obviously doesn't. And he told me not to contact him anymore and I said Gladly. What would you do in this situation? I really want to disconnect from the dysfunction all together but feel like I have a responsibility as his daughter to help him. Keep in mind, we have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I am at a loss...Aside from the fact that he's killing himself with alcohol, he is completely abnoxious and inappropriate when he's drunk and says things that make me really uncomfortable. Like last night he was talking about how his upstairs neighbors are gay guys and said "yea.. i heard one say, "ugh i got poop on my weiner." He obviously didn't hear them say that... but he says inappropriate stuff like this when he's drunk ALL THE TIME.

moreResolved Question: I've had upper abdominal pain for 2 months straight and don't know what to do?
Sorry this is a little long, but I really need help. For 2 months straight I've had abdominal pain and I'm at my wit's end about what to do about it. It's in the upper part and sometimes flanks around to the side and to my back. It's usually a crampy pain but sometimes it's more like a stabbing pain and it sometimes it's worse on one side than the other. It's usually worse after meals and I can't eat very much at once or I feel incredibly nauseous.
I went to a doctor once ... they just ran bloodwork, ruled out pancreatitis, and put me on stomach ulcer medication (which is not helping even though they doubled my dosage.) I don't know what to do because my experience with doctors is always like that ... they just run basic tests and send me on my way ... it's so frustrating.
Please help, I'm desperate. What do I do now?
moreResolved Question: What is wrong with my dog?
My dog has been ill since last Wednesday, 3/10/10. I took him to the vet on Saturday. At that time he was very weak, wouldn't walk much, seemed very dizzy/disoriented and not eating. The vet ran blood work, urine analysis, and xrays - all were clean except one high pancreas enzyme. The vet put him on an injectible antibiotic that is supposed to last two weeks and stated he thinks the dog has pancreatitis. He seemed to feel slightly better, is now eating and moving around a little bit more but is not progressively getting better since Sunday.
He is currently showing the following symptoms: weakness, dizziness/incoordination, runny nose, he looks like he is losing weight but is eating, he is breathing strange- almost like he has a stuffy nose-breathing really hard but through his nose but no panting, off and on he is getting really drooly, and is urinating in the house which is not normal for him. He still will not go up/down the stairs and if he tries loses balance, and bumping into walls when walking. When he is just standing still he is leaning on his back legs and seems like he is trying to stable himself from being dizzy or something. I also noticed a white spot in the middle of his left eye- possibly a cataract forming? It wasn't there a week ago.
My dog is 6 1/2 yrs old, Boxer, Male, not neutered.
Any ideas on what this could be, or any test I should ask my vet to run? Thanks for the help!Vet has him on Purina EN - its is prescription canned food.

I posted a questions a couple of days ago and i greatly appreciate the feedback and answers. Unfortunately my cat is still having problems. I am going to list his symptoms and everything he has been tested for and hopefully i will get some much needed advice
He is a 6 year old male cat, he is an indoor cat. His symptoms are
Vomits all food, it is undigested and is accompanied by white mucus and white foam. He is no longer able to hold down liquid including water. he has lost almost 3 pounds in the past month. He is still in good spirits, but he does sleep a lot. (Please also check previous posted question)
Tests: all were negative
Heart worm
Feline Aids
Feline Leukemia
IBD
Pancreatitis
Heart Disease
Barium Dye Test
X-rays
Blood Work
He does not have an obstruction, he has been given antibiotic, cortisone and anti nausea medicine, he also was switched to prescription diet z/d. We have no idea what to do next. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I will be watching the question posts all night so if you need more information or have questions please check other question or ask me. Thank you in advance.
Note: He is now staying with our vet so he can better take care of him with injections and fluids.
we have gotten three other vet options and all are stumped.he has perfect blood work, liver and kidneys are good and functioning properly, barium dye test was perfect and passed his system within three hours.his food was changed to hypoallergentic food and he is given distilled water that is changed at least six times a day. He was keeping water down until sunday, now he keeps nothing down and the vomitting is immediate after he tries to ingest anything. He was given Florta Fortia Probiotics. We also tried kitty ensure, tuna juice and organic sodium free chicken broth, nothing is staying down.
He is "yaking" before i guess you can say that, what it actually seems like is he is trying to swallow it back down to prevent from throwing up.
He is still in good spirits and had an appetite up until sunday when everything just went south.Sorry didnt clarify, the vomit is clear muscus with white foam with some undigested food. Its not rabies, the vomit is classified as respitory fluid, But his lungs are completley clear.
As for cleaning products all our cleaning products were approved by our vet when our dog had allergies this past summer. All the cleaning products we have are all pet friendly approved.he has been tested for all parasites and toxins/ poisins.
Sorry for all the added details my brain is in overdrive..smartty-pants thank you for the infor. My vet has discussed the option of exploratory surgery and said there is a chance he wont survive be how week he is I will pass the information on to him. Thank you very much

it started 5 days ago. i have 8 year old Pomeranian. she wouldn't get up, eat, or even let anyone touch her. as it continued, she still wouldn't eat, she would shake and pant. her tail has been down this whole time. the only thing she can eat is rice. she cant even walk normal SOMETIMES, shes all wobbly. she has diarrhea and she is vomiting, and it seems sometimes she cant hold her bladder the way she usually could (im talking about peeing) she cant walk up stairs or anything shes all mopey. i took her to the vet and spent over 600$ on xrays and blood work and everything. they couldnt find anything. then they call and say it might be pancreatitis. so i took her to another vet to see there opinion and to test her for pancreatitis and it came out negative. also, they have no idea what is wrong with her either. and they touched her whole body, she didnt mind so it has to be something inside or mental, please help.

moreResolved Question: Post mortem revealed my cat died from Lymphoma, should my vet have seen this after 4 weeks of hell?
took Hugo (6 year old long haired cat, on my profile pic) to the vets for his booster on 30th Jan 2010. He had been off his food a bit that week but I thought it was due to the tins he sometimes goes off but apart from that seemed fine. They gave him his injection and a worming tablet and we went home. Got home and he was playing in the garden. Come tea time he was in his bed, we went out and didn't think anything of it. Got back at midnight and he hadn't moved, I knew something was wrong and came down in the night to check on him. The next day he clearly had a fever and was breathing fast. My friend who is a vet nurse said it could have been his booster. Rung the vets but they said "it definitely won't be the booster". He seemed a bit better Monday but then worse on Tuesday so I took him to vet. His temperature was 104.6!! They gave him some metacam and an antibiotic injection and sent him home. He had been off his food totally and went straight home to eat, thank goodness! The next day he seemed to be going back down hill yet again. Took him back to the vets, they kept him in on a drip and next morning he was raging to get out and came home, bright as a button! By Sunday he was quiet again, not eating much, obviously not well. Took him back to vets that week, (temperature 103.8) they kept him in and did more bloods (bloods for first week showed low white cell count and high urea but nothing major). They kept him in for three days, tested leukemia and FIV, both negative. Did more bloods second week and they were normal. Hugo didn't respond to metacam (painkiller to reduce temperature) or the drip during the first 24 hours, he only showed improvement with steroids. By Thursday he seemed a bit better and came home but I knew he wasn't right. I had asked about all kinds of diseases, including lymphoma, Feline peritonitis, inflamed bowel disease, all the major cat illnesses (leukemia etc.) but the vets didn't seem to think anything seemed familiar. Female vet said, "he's not losing enough weight for anything serious". I asked for an Xray and ultrasound scan but they said it wasn't necessary. Went back in on Saturday for another steroid injection. By following Friday he was the same, went back again and they gave him methodone, I was beside myself at this point. They said that they thought his kidneys were swollen but kidney function on bloods were normal. He was eating little bits but not much, he had gone from 3.82kg to 3.61kg. I went home that weekend and nursed him all I could, I let him sleep with me in the spare room, I knew he was seriously unwell. Monday morning came and I was back at the vets with him, asking them to take him in on the drip as I knew this had helped before. They were suspecting pancreatitis. Tests done for this and more bloods showed negative for pancreatitis and some deterioration in the kidneys function. I was begging for a scan, they just kept shooting me down and saying a scan wouldn't show anything. On Wednesday afternoon female vet rang me and said that they wanted to operate, despite not doing the scan that I had requested so many times. I agreed to it but when I went to the vets that night to see my darling Hugo they had been arguing about whether to operate and the male partner in the vets over ruled the female as we were then waiting for pancreatitis test to come back. Test came back negative on 25th Feb so they were planning on operating on 26th Feb to see if they could see anything. When I got there that Thursday evening to see my soulmate Hugo he was in severe pain, could hardly breath and it broke my heart to see him like that. They gave him more methadone to ease the pain which it did. He had another session of difficulty breathing at 10.30pm that evening, they managed to settle him with oxygen and methadone but he died as he yelled out in pain at 11.00pm. I am totally devasted. R.I.P. Hugo, my best friend, I miss you dearly xx
I am beating myself up about this, I took him to a trusted vet, did all the research I could, took advice whilst Hugo was in hospital from two other vets. Everyone seemed to draw a blank. All I know is that I was desperate for that scan. Could anyone tell me what they think Hugo could have died from? If I could have done anything different and more importantly what the vets should have done to help him? I feel the vets have let him down terribly :-(
Post mortem results revealed my dear Hugo died from Lymphoma in his kidneys, lungs and a lesion in his pancreas. I feel so sorry for my little boy suffering, truly I do, my pathologist told me a scan would have shown this. How do vets diagnose lymphoma?

moreResolved Question: Why is my cat limping?
My cat became ill two weeks ago;he stopped eating and drinking and was vomiting. I took him to the vet and after a few tests they said they didn't know what was causing it and sent us home with some meds. Two days later he had no improvement so I took him back and they hospitalized him. Three days later I was able to pick him up but before I got there they called and told me he had developed a limp in his left back leg and that it was probably caused from his nausea meds. They changed his medication and told me that I should notice his limp improve after a couple days with it being gone in a week. It's been a week and I have seen no improvement at all. I took him back to the vet and they tested him for diabetes which came back negative and told me they suspected he had had an acute pancreatitis. They still insists that the meds caused his limp. After a week shouldn't they be out of his system? Should I take him to another vet? He doesn't seem to be in any pain but I'm worried something more is going on here, Honestly my first thought was that maybe they dropped him during a feeding( they had to force feed him) and hurt his leg. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
moreResolved Question: Undergoing an ERCP procedure: Yes or No?
I am 28 and have a history of abdominal pain. 2 Years ago I was taking birth control pills but had to quit because I was developing pancreatitis, although I never got to the point of having an actual attack. After I quit the pill I got pregnant (Duh!) 3 months later and my son is now 10 months old. During that time I was pain-free and had an IUD with no hormones. I don't drink or smoke. I do hit the fast food places a little more often than I should not and every now and then I got mild discomfort on the same area. I weight 148 pounds. Well, last month I had a cold and took Tylenol Multi-symptom twice a day for about a week, and after that my IUD was coming out of my cervix and I had to take a Plan B double pill (those have about 10 times the amount of a reg. birth control pill) to avoid another pregnancy now. My period started off time and I got mild to moderate pain on my left abdominal side with nausea, vomit and dhiarrea. X-rays and ultrasound showed uncomplicated pancreatitis, no gallstones. Dr. ordered to take Nexium and see a GI. GI ordered MRCP a few days later which showed also no gallstones, good liver, and decreased inflamation, etc. blood tests before and after the situation showed a bit higher than normal levels of amylase, lypase, and sugar; days after fat-free, sugar-free diet, levels back to normal. My period is over and I feel the pain is starting to subside slowly each day. I am sticking with lots of fluids, fruits, vitamins, veggies, wheat products and no alcohol, dairy, fried foods or lipids whatsoever. I am going to see the dr. back on Thursday. Given my history and the risks that ERCP has... should I go for it or rather wait and stick with a non-fat diet and no drugs that can hurt my tummy?? Too many stories of ERCP gone bad...

I have a 5 year old Min Pin. Yesterday morning he was depressed and lethargic so we took him to the vet where they discovered they thought he had collapsing trachea when she took his temp and it was 106 degrees F. They got his fever down, ran tests, and discovered that his Pancreas test was abnormal. Pancreatitis. They gave him fluids under the skin so i could take him home, some morphine , and sent me home with Baytril for antibiotics 2x daily, metacam for pain/inflamation daily, and as needed Tramadol for pain. Last night his temp was back to normal at 101F. This morning it is now 104.6F. Is there a home remedy to get the fever down, should I give him his morning antibiotics, should he go back to the vet? Any and all advice even on the Pancreatitis would be helpful. Thanks! They did also send me home with a can of food that he should be on for a few days and then a new food thats low fat.

I live in California, and was having problems with extreme pain in my sternum-- so I went out to a local medical center's Urgent Care unit. They took both blood tests and a urine sample from me, ultimately leading to them telling me that they didn't know what was wrong and to take indigestion medicine. This trip cost me roughly $200. Four days later my pain became so excruciating that I drove myself to the Emergency Room. There they ran the same tests, and about 2 hours later I was diagnosed with Pancreatitis and now have all sorts of medical bills to deal with. If the same tests were ran both days, is there something I can do to contest the original $200 when they told me nothing was wrong with me? Can I take this to the medical board? I could use all the serious advice there is. Thank you so much.

In January 2009 I had what I suspected was my first gallstone attack. Throughout the year I've had 5-6 of these episodes of high, persistent pain in my chest for 3-4 hours. Now, 4 days ago on Sunday afternoon I started having this same chest pain. Since then I've been in varying amounts of pain and discomfort and have been to the ER 4 times in excruciating pain. They performed an ultrasound, urine test, multiple blood tests and x-rays and came to the conclusion that I do in fact have "multiple" stones. I was put on a waiting list for removal which should be in 2-4 weeks.
In the meantime, I'm still in a huge amount of pain. I cannot eat, and since Sunday I have only ate about 500 calories. Every time I go to the ER they run tests and conclude that it is simply gallstone pain, but how can an attack last 4 days? I'm scared I may have pancreatitis or something serious. Please someone help me.
moreResolved Question: Slightly elevated pancreatic enzymes?
I got blood tests about a week ago and the tests came back with my lipase and amylase 3 points above the normal cutoff. I've been having some stomach pains that wake me up at night sometimes but it doesn't seem to be anything overly serious. The doctor said pancreatitis but after all the hoops he's made me go through I'm not so sure I believe him anymore. Shouldn't I be in the hospital if it's pancreatitis? Could it be stress causing this? It seems like I feel much less pain when I meditate before bed. I am not going to lie. I'm worried about pancreatic cancer, but I am only 22 years old and it seems unlikely. The doctor said pancreatitis is the only reason my enzymes are slightly raised like this. I was hoping to get someone's opinion on this, as I have been through the ringer. He hasn't done any real diagnostic testing on me at all. Just the blood test. First he said it was gastritis, then he said it was an ulcer, but I tested negative for H.Pylori and I'm pissed because I'm tired of seeing my stupid doctor. I've been there six times in the last two months. By the way the normal cutoff of "high" for these enzymes is 160, and I was at 163.LOL Diabetes. That is ridiculous. My grandmother had diabetes. That is NOT what this is. I was wondering about gallstones. I just don't get how it could be pancreatitis. I wasn't sent to the hospital and my pain was never so bad I felt like I needed to go to the hospital. I never developed a fever, and my pulse never soared above normal. I am soooo confuuuuused....That and it's been going on for several weeks. The pain seems to have gone away for the time being, but I would wake up at night with either pain that felt like I'd been punched in the gut (Not too horrible, however) or with reflux. Both prevented me from sleeping, but I just...I don't get it. If it comes back, I will be going back to the doctor. I know it isn't from alcohol because I've only ever drank lightly (1-3 beers a week). I also HAD a beer in the midst of all this mess and it neither added to nor caused any problems. The more I meditate and the less stress I'm under the less I hurt. Thank you for your answers.
moreResolved Question: Can a dog all of the sudden become sensitive or allergic to her food?
I’m looking for any advise as I’m at a loss. My 3 year old Shih Tzu was diagnosed with pancreatitis a week and a half ago. She has been back and forth to the vet. Every time she started to get better and eat again (giving her very small amounts) the next morning the symptoms would return. Part of the issue was that she was having a bad reaction to the antibiotic they had her one. As soon as we stopped giving that to her (per the Dr. orders) she sparked back up and got her appetite back. We though we were home free.
She was great all day yesterday. Playful, energetic, ate her food, stool started to get back to normal. Then before bed she vomited her food. She ate a few pieces of her food and then went to sleep. Middle of the night we hear her tummy making crazy noises…and vomit again and then the diarrhea started up again. It like any food in her tummy she want it out.
So I’m trying to figure out what caused this to happy and why it keep happening. She is VERY allergic to almost everything so all she ever eats is Advoderm Beef and Natures Miracle Lamb Treats as a snack. She has been eating this for 2+ years with no problem.
So….
-Could she all of the sudden out of the blue become sensitive to her food. Either allergic or could it be too fatty to set off the pancreatitis?
-Could there be something wrong with the food? Like a got a bad batch?
As reference…her stool has been tested and it was all clear, she has had 2 blood tests all clear (pancreatitis was positive in the first and negative in the second) e-ray was all clear.
Looking for some direction and help. Going back to the vet today. Might need to see a specialist?"Hate to say it doesn't look good...?"
Meaing there is not way to cure this?- Lola is 3 years old
- She was food alergy tested 2 years ago and based on the results advoderm beef came back and a positive option.
moreResolved Question: Could my brother's symptoms be chronic pancreatitis?
Long story short...my brother is an alcoholic. He is living with my husband and I temporarily so I'm seeing firsthand his actions and the consequences.
To sum it up, I know my brother was hospitalized shortly with acute pancreatitis last year...and from what I can gather from docs, his liver functions tests have come back very high ever since. He was told to stop drinking but never did.
Back then, he suffered from pain in his stomach and had chronic nausea and vomiting. Now, however, he is having chronic nausea and vomiting several times a week but says he feels absolutely NO pain. I have read that as pancreatitis progresses, the pain can actually subside. Anyone have experience with this as being true? He refuses to go to a doc..although this evening I told him he must if he wants to stay with us for the time we agreed upon. I think he is finally willing to go now but it wouldn't surprise me if he bailed on that plan and moved out.
By the way, I have pleaded with him to stop drinking and get some help but his denial is unbelievable. He actually spends a day vomiting and then goes right back to drinking the following day and actually WONDERS why he continues to vomit. THAT is how deeply in denial this man has fallen.
Please share your knowledge and experience if you have it (regarding the pancreatitis with no pain symptoms).
My husband, ironically, is recovering from a similar path in his life (with drinking) but is doing great currently so I feel like I've been there already once and really don't enjoy seeing someone else in my life go down the same road.
Thanks in advance!
moreResolved Question: Could heath problems be a reason for his bad attitude? Need serious advice?
My dogs behavior is getting worse and worse, despite all the training efforts we have put in on him. Infact he is now being nasty to our other dog and bullying her.
He has been in and out of the doggy hospital his whole life (2 years). We his owners are physically drained, mentally drained, and financially drained from his vet expenses.
He has been sick since he was a puppy. It seems once we get one condition under control he develops another.
Our dog to us it typically friendly, kind, loving, affectionate a really good dog inside these 4 walls. But get him out of these four walls and he acts terrible. And he used to love people but now he isn't friendly toward people he doesn't know.
It could be because his whole life he has been sick, and at the hospital and home resting and we get him out when we can but socialization hasn't been a big thing we've been able to do due to the fact he is always sick.
What do you think:
Also here is a current list of his health problems:
Health issues: (Some of these are conditions and some of these are things that are being looked into further)
Allergies (currently being treated for)
Breathing problems (may be related to something more)
Gastrointestinal Issues (Including Pancreatitis, where he did vomit blood several times, currently being managed and watched closely)
Severe anxiety issues (currently being treated for)
Extremely rapid heartrate
Tires easily, too easily
always panting and short of breath
Can't keep weight on. (Constant battle)
(He has been through so much tested and pretty much lived the first two years of his life in and out of the doggy hospital, its sad really)
He has some other mild conditions that are managable but those are his big issues.
Is this going to be the reality for the rest of his life? And what can we do to fix his behavior?
How do we know if this behavior is caused by pain and discomfort or something else? ThanksADD: with the new baby coming we are a little fearful of his bad days and ofcourse the finances are always on our mind.He still has a lot of fight in him. I'll know when he is done. (I have had to put down pets before, they let you know when they are done)add: When we first got him we were a month away from getting married, just out of school, and we had a nice savings. (all that money went to him, now there is a lot of stress on us) I know that sounds selfish but its hard not to be sometimes. I mean we are trying to provide a good future for our child but we don't know how that is going to happen if we keep having this vet bills pile up
Maybe we are thinking selfishly but we do love him and want to care for him at the same timeADD: He is a 2 year old poodle. he still has more good days than bad and loves life. He isn't ready to leave this earth yet.
I told him we would fight as long as he is willingADD: He is a 2 year old poodle. he still has more good days than bad and loves life. He isn't ready to leave this earth yet.
I told him we would fight as long as he is willingADD: I think a lot of it has to do with the fact we weren't able to socialize him when he was younger and I don't know how to go about it now at this age with this behavior. Now that most of his issues appear to be under control (according to the vet, though he feels they are all interealted, we just have to keep looking for the cause)
