Open Question: please help..Need a really smart MD. My father fell ill approx 3 weeks ago..?
after consuming alcohol. He started to feel weak and began to vomit(not an isolated incident as this has happened before) along with the vomiting he has high pulse (120) and low oxygen saturation 84. His blood pressure was 148/84. While he was at the hospital he had a continuous fever of 101.5 and above. He also developed asites during his stay at the hospital. The ultimately diagnoised him with having pancreatitis. Although he was no longer vomiting his oxygen level was low and he still had a fever 5 days later...he was discharged home with levaquin and medications he takes for cholestoral, hypertension, and plavix for the stint that was done in 2008. I felt uneasy about him being discharge so we went to another hospital that took an x-ray based on my observations and temp checks over the last two days at home. The notice not only he had develped pneumonia but also and plerual effusion on the left side of his lung. This was drain and he is now feeling alot better, also the asites has almost dissappeared. MY QUESTION NOW IS WHY DOES MY FATHER CONTINUE TO HAVE A FEVER AND HAS HAD ONE FOR THE PAST 3 WEEKS. It flucuates but usually tends to go back up. He is still in the hospital but I want to do my own digging as it seems as family members tend to be the voice when a family member is ill. So here is the run down. diagnoised with pancreatitis asites fatty liver stint in heart high blood pressure that has normalize during stay in hospital oxygen is now in the 95 range heart rate is now 93 age of patient 68 years old Male 50 pounds overweight and no diabetes please help me find the culprit. I believe that many heads are better than one, and possibly the yahoo community may have some insight or has and have the same thing happen to them. I just want my dad back home and feeling back to normal thanks I will give the 10 points! moreVoting Question: Fairly strong pain in the upper right abdominal, what could it be?
About a week ago, my boyfriend started experiencing pain in the upper right side of his abdomen. The first day the pain was excruciating and he vomited for pretty much the entire day. Since then, he hasn't thrown up but has been eating light. The pain now comes and goes and he says it hasn't yet been as severe as the first day. The pain comes and goes several times throughout the day and today it felt like he may have had a fever, he hadn't before at all. We didn't have a thermometer so I couldn't tell for sure. He felt warm but its pretty hot out today so it may have just been the heat. I am concerned it might be pancreatitis but wouldn't he have had to been hospitalized by now? He missed a few days of work but he has been going now for a few days. moreVoting Question: Fairly strong pain in the upper right abdominal, what could it be?

took Hugo (6 year old long haired cat, on my profile pic) to the vets for his booster on 30th Jan 2010. He had been off his food a bit that week but I thought it was due to the tins he sometimes goes off but apart from that seemed fine. They gave him his injection and a worming tablet and we went home. Got home and he was playing in the garden. Come tea time he was in his bed, we went out and didn't think anything of it. Got back at midnight and he hadn't moved, I knew something was wrong and came down in the night to check on him. The next day he clearly had a fever and was breathing fast. My friend who is a vet nurse said it could have been his booster. Rung the vets but they said "it definitely won't be the booster". He seemed a bit better Monday but then worse on Tuesday so I took him to vet. His temperature was 104.6!! They gave him some metacam and an antibiotic injection and sent him home. He had been off his food totally and went straight home to eat, thank goodness! The next day he seemed to be going back down hill yet again. Took him back to the vets, they kept him in on a drip and next morning he was raging to get out and came home, bright as a button! By Sunday he was quiet again, not eating much, obviously not well. Took him back to vets that week, (temperature 103.8) they kept him in and did more bloods (bloods for first week showed low white cell count and high urea but nothing major). They kept him in for three days, tested leukemia and FIV, both negative. Did more bloods second week and they were normal. Hugo didn't respond to metacam (painkiller to reduce temperature) or the drip during the first 24 hours, he only showed improvement with steroids. By Thursday he seemed a bit better and came home but I knew he wasn't right. I had asked about all kinds of diseases, including lymphoma, Feline peritonitis, inflamed bowel disease, all the major cat illnesses (leukemia etc.) but the vets didn't seem to think anything seemed familiar. Female vet said, "he's not losing enough weight for anything serious". I asked for an Xray and ultrasound scan but they said it wasn't necessary. Went back in on Saturday for another steroid injection. By following Friday he was the same, went back again and they gave him methodone, I was beside myself at this point. They said that they thought his kidneys were swollen but kidney function on bloods were normal. He was eating little bits but not much, he had gone from 3.82kg to 3.61kg. I went home that weekend and nursed him all I could, I let him sleep with me in the spare room, I knew he was seriously unwell. Monday morning came and I was back at the vets with him, asking them to take him in on the drip as I knew this had helped before. They were suspecting pancreatitis. Tests done for this and more bloods showed negative for pancreatitis and some deterioration in the kidneys function. I was begging for a scan, they just kept shooting me down and saying a scan wouldn't show anything. On Wednesday afternoon female vet rang me and said that they wanted to operate, despite not doing the scan that I had requested so many times. I agreed to it but when I went to the vets that night to see my darling Hugo they had been arguing about whether to operate and the male partner in the vets over ruled the female as we were then waiting for pancreatitis test to come back. Test came back negative on 25th Feb so they were planning on operating on 26th Feb to see if they could see anything. When I got there that Thursday evening to see my soulmate Hugo he was in severe pain, could hardly breath and it broke my heart to see him like that. They gave him more methadone to ease the pain which it did. He had another session of difficulty breathing at 10.30pm that evening, they managed to settle him with oxygen and methadone but he died as he yelled out in pain at 11.00pm. I am totally devasted. R.I.P. Hugo, my best friend, I miss you dearly xx I am beating myself up about this, I took him to a trusted vet, did all the research I could, took advice whilst Hugo was in hospital from two other vets. Everyone seemed to draw a blank. All I know is that I was desperate for that scan. Could anyone tell me what they think Hugo could have died from? If I could have done anything different and more importantly what the vets should have done to help him? I feel the vets have let him down terribly :-( Post mortem results revealed my dear Hugo died from Lymphoma in his kidneys, lungs and a lesion in his pancreas. It all started when we gave him some canned Iams food (he's normally on Natural Balance dry food but we were running low so I thought supplementing with a little canned would be fine until I could get to Petco to get more dry food). Vomitting, mucousy stools, no appetite--all the classic symptoms. He's been in and out of the vet office for a month now with fevers and weight loss. He started at 20 lbs and he's down to 14 now. Last night I laid in bed on my stomach and felt this sudden pain in my abdomen. It was in the upper center part, a very particular place, between my ribs. I turned onto my side and it continued for a few minutes, and then it eased somewhat. Today I have been feeling a similar constant, aching pain in the same spot. I'm pretty sure that the place the pain is coming from is where my pancreas is, and I've looked up symptoms for pancreatitis. I don't seem to have any other symptoms, such as fever, but Saturday I did get very nauseus and I threw up. I believe that was due to taking a pain pill for a tooth ache, though. I don't really know what else this could be, but I'm worried about it because this type of pain doesn't feel like a normal stomach ache or flu or anything. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks.Your answers are pretty reassuring, except that it just feels like something's wrong in there. I don't think it would be related to what I ate; I had a salad and baked fish last night. Today I ate broccoli and cheese soup with a turkey and swiss sandwich. I haven't had any issues with my gall bladder in the past, either. I'm going to call my doctor in the morning, I just wanted to get an idea of what could be going on tonight.I also read online that with apendicitis the pain is often described with a circular motion of the hand over the center of the abdomen; I was wondering if this could be what's going on? I do have the pain in a particular place, though, and it does seem a little high. moreResolved Question: Needing a Second Opinion?
I plan on taking him back tomorrow if he doesn't feel any better. Last night we took our cat into the vet because of green vomiting and not eating or drinking. They did blood work and x-rays and found nothing wrong with him besides a fever and a low white blood cell count. They sent him home with fluid pockets in his back, an antibiotic shot, and anti-throw up shot. We got him home and he drank plenty of water but didn't eat any of the food we gave him. This morning I was woken up by him meowing. I gave him a bowl of his usual food and he kind of just picked at it but at least ate some of it. Though it is now 8 hours later and he hasn't gone poop (the x-rays showed a full colon) but has gone pee, hasn't drank any water, and still hasn't eaten any more food. The next step is to go to surgery because they think he might of ate something. Though I am not convinced that he would eat anything. We also just got a new kitten with the loss of his blood brother 3 weeks ago. So what else could it be? Stress, pancreatitis, constipation?I DON'T WANT TO GO TO SURGERY!I just gave him some tuna he kind of ate that (Licking/Nibbles). The following is a list of possible side-effects and complications to consider before having weight-loss surgery. We will discuss these in more detail at your office consultation. 1. Anastomotic leak (leak from a connection made to the bowel, usually requires re-operation and long hospital stay) 2. Anastomotic stricture (narrowing or obstruction at an intestinal connection resulting in vomiting) 3. Bowel obstruction/strangulation/internal hernia/ischemic bowel possibly needing removal (associated with pain and vomiting, usually requires re-operation) 4. Injury to an abdominal or pelvic organ/structure (especially the liver, spleen, pancreas, bile duct, stomach, esophagus, colon, bowel, diaphragm, urinary bladder, nerve or blood vessel) 5. Conversion to an open operation (due to bleeding, poor exposure, large liver, tension on intestines, etc.) 6. Incisional hernia (more likely if procedure is done open) 7. Infection or abscess (due to a leak, spillage of intestinal contents, underlying infection, etc) 8. Bleeding and the potential need for blood transfusion. Blood transfusion carries the risk of infection with bacteria, parasites (malaria), and viruses (hepatitis, HIV/AIDS). 9. Need for additional surgery or procedures to treat any complication that may occur 10. Prolonged hospital stay or readmission may be needed to treat complications 11. Deep Vein Thrombosis (blood clot in a vein) 12. Pulmonary Embolus (blood clot going to lung, fatal 30% of the time) 13. Atelectasis (lung collapse causing fevers, possibly pneumonia) 14. Not eating much, lethargic but all tests are normal.?
Sam is a 9 year old neutered orange cat who showed up at my mom’s door a few days before a big snowstorm when he was ~9 months old. He’d been living (apparently feral) outside for several weeks before. FeLV/FIV neg. Always very healthy. Even had a check up about 2.5 weeks ago. Last Friday he didn’t eat dinner with as much enthusiasm as usual. Saturday somewhat lethargic and less eating. Sunday did not defecate. More lethargic and even less eating. Monday went to the vet. Slight fever. X-ray revealed SLIGHTLY enlarged pancreas. Slightly dehydrated. Given IV. Blood tests normal. Slightly swollen abdomen. Not painful to the touch – at least when they poke it he doesn’t act like it hurts. Vet thinks the cat is “really sick”. Tentative diagnosis is pancreatitis which the cat either gets over or it doesn’t. Tuesday-Thursday. Basically stable. Not eating much. Given subq fluids. Still does to the box to do his business. Gets on couch to sleep. Back legs appear a bit stiff. Today. Seems worse. More edema/swelling. Extremely lethargic. Went back to vet. Got ultrasound. Normal except slight mottling of the spleen. Did biopsy to try to find lymphoma. Preliminary results say that was normal. No fever. Repeat blood work normal. Got a steroid shot (mainly pain control). Within an hour MUCH better. Ran down the hall at home and scratched his post and then gave himself a 20 minute bath. Unclear if it’s possible the steroid acted this fast. That’s better than he’s been since Saturday. He seems to be purring more than normal. Several vets at the practice (which is really really good) are totally stumped. All the tests are normal but the cat is apparently dying. Any idea what is going on??? Thanks! Catherine Poison: Nothing new is in the house. No damage on anything. He hasn’t even attacked the house plants in over a year. Inside only cat. I only have a few symptoms.?
For 3 months I've had tummy pains. The doctor said it was just a postpartum symptom, so I didn't think too much about it. But for the past week the pain has been really bad. Mostly my upper tummy hurts, but sometimes I think my whole tummy hurts. No fever or back pain though. Increased activity makes it worse, as well as coughing or sneezing. I'm going to the doctor on Monday, but in the meantime, do you think it's pancreatitis, or could it be something else? I'm not a drinker, I've never had my gallbladder removed or anything like that. moreResolved Question: Possible pancreatitis?
I've been having digestive problems for years, but over the past 3-5 days it's been getting a lot worse. I'm experiencing a stabbing/throbbing pain in my upper left abdomen. (For clarification, it would be my right side if you were looking at me from the front.) I also have similar pain in my lower back (mostly the same side). It feels bloated and hurts to touch, and at times I get quite short of breath because of it. Pain becomes even worse upon eating. Nausea along with diarrhea (consisting of yellowish-green stool), along with what I think might be considered a low-grade fever from time to time. (I usually run around 97.3, but at times I'll get as high as 99.4). It hurts to stand up straight or lay flat; I often need to curl my leg up for even a tiny bit of relief. Should also be mentioned I had gallbladder removal in March 2007. I guess I'm a bit unsure if this is something that can be considered a slight emergency. moreResolved Question: Is it normal to discharge an ER patient with Acute Pancreatitis?
My husband had to go to ER, after a CT and blood test he was diagnosed with Acute Pancreatits. He had 3 shots of Morphine, than they gave him Saline IV and sent us home in the middle of the night. He is now taking codeine for pain, we don't have our Dr. appt until Mon AM, he is running a fever(101.3) Is this normal treatment for this sort of thing. He does not drink alcohol, and they said no cancer or stones were found. moreResolved Question: Pancreatitis, don't quite fit into any causitive category, but a bit in some ... Any GI's out there?
6 weeks ago, I went to my PD with what I thought was severe heartburn. I went to pharm. and he suggested Pepcid. I took it, no luck in an hour (like he said). I called and asked PD how long Pepcid takes to take it away, she said an hour, I said it's been 4 hours and I was in agony. Severe abdominal pain, some vomiting, low grade fever. I had what I thought was the flu for 3 days prior (no pain, just didn't feel well, diarr and low grade fever. She said come in. She took a blood test ... Highly elevated Amylase and Lipase, somewhat elevated ALT, AST. Had weekly blood tests since then, and it's been going down. Nearly normal Amylase, still 3 times normal Lipase (which is much lower than it was... nearly 3000). I read the following on internet as far as causes: 1) Alcoholism: "Alcohol is the leading culprit. Usually, it takes several years of heavy drinking -- such as a 12-pack of beer of every day." I drink, but not more than 3-4 drinks per night, 3-4 nights per week (if that!) however, I had a life altering even a few weeks before attack and did drink a bit more (nightly, maybe 4 drinks), but no 'binge drinking'. Rarely drunk more than 4 times in the last year, no hangovers. 2) Gallstones: never had a symptom. 3) heridedary: nope, nobody. 4) Meds: rare cases of Lamictal and Ativan have been reported "after market, and reported on 'compassionate please' cases. I am on both. (BTW, Lamictal was raised from 150 mg to 200 mg 1 wk before attack, and due to stress, went from 1 ativan per day to 2-3). 5) no traumas. The pain was severe (I have little tolerance for pain), but not enough that I felt ER was necessary. Nor did she. I was still walking around and doing what shopping I had to do, etc. OTC painkillers helped. Background: 48 yrs old, F, somewhat healthy diet. I feel fine now. Having another blood test Monday. Also have history of ovarian problems.... recently, cysts, fibroids. Any known relation? Any herbal/alternative cures or remedies? Is this permanent? She says never another drink of alcohol, not even cough syrup. Is that true? Even socially, a couple here and there? Due to my two year history of drugs (antidepressants, Lamictal, Xanax, Ativan ... all prescribed by Dr's), I have also taken Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid to counteract the med's effect on liver. Just can't find enough general information on this on the internet. Just doom, gloom, not so great mortality rates, and a future of horror to live with ... kidney dialysis, heart failure, liver failure, extreme pain, narcotic addiction, surgeries. Please advise... Thank you and God bless. moreResolved Question: Anyone with experience of gallstones/pancreatitis?
I'm 28 years old, female, and overweight. I thought I was completely healthy until 4 days ago. I've never had any sort of serious health problem until now. It was like someone just flipped a light switch and I had this searing stabbing pain in my upper abdomen. After a few hours, I couldn't take the pain anymore and I went to the hospital. They did blood work and a CT scan and found out that my gallbladder contained a lot of gallstones and that I had pancreatitis as a result of this. I was admitted to the hospital, taken off of food, etc. They were afraid that a gallstone got trapped in the bile duct but, fortunately I passed the gallstone. After a few days without food, my blood work started to look better so, they released me after I made an appointment for gallbladder removal on December 3rd. I am allowed to eat real food now as long as it is bland and in small portions. I've been home a short while now and I feel so strange. Every single time I eat, I feel like my stomach is so acidic and I have to rush to the toilet immediately following the meal. Although the stabbing pain is gone in my abdomen, my pancreas and gallbladder feel extremely raw and sore. Also my shoulders and ribs are aching severely. The new thing is tonight I was feeling quite bloated under my ribs and I was massaging my abdomen a little and I felt all these strange little hard lumps everywhere just under the skin. I don't know if all these things are normal after a gallstone attack? I was told to go directly to the hospital if another attack occurs or if I develop a fever. I'm worried that I won't make the 3 weeks until my surgery and I don't think my digestive system can take another attack like that. But, on the other side of it, I also know that lots of people live with having many gallstone attacks and they are fine. Maybe I'm panicking for no reason at all. Basically, what I would like to know is if the symptoms I described sound normal following a gallstone attack? Thanks! moreResolved Question: What disease or condition can this be?
I have had diarrhea 4-5 times a day, especially after I eat something. I have a low grade fever 99.6-100. Slight stomach pains and nausea. Really tired, and slight headache. My doctor has done blood tests for giardia, parasites, nothing is coming back positive. He did stool cultures etc. for like pancreatitis, ulcers, and they are evidently negative. But I just got over having an ulcer caused by H-pylori in August. (i will always test positive for it now I know). And I asked him about ecoli and he said he didn't think I had it. I don't know what I HAVEN'T been tested for!I don't have my gallbladder. It was surgically removed some years ago because of a polyp over the duct.Tweety, it has been ongoing since I had my h-pylori incident. He is now checking stool for cancer ( the test putting feces on the paper and sending it in). He did do another blood test for C-dif we haven't gotten back yet. And this temp. is not my "normal" temp. It is usually 98.6. Thanks! moreResolved Question: How can I get my doctor to listen to me?
I went to the doctor with symptoms of diarrhea, stomach pains, low grade fever, nausea. He told me it was stomach flu just by listening to my gurgling stomach. I have been having this trouble for a while but it just got worse this weekend. I think it is my Byetta, and didn't take it yesterday and was fine - 0 problem. But today I took it because my sugar was back up. Now having the problems mentioned above again. He won't look at the possibility that it could be pancreatitis caused by the Byetta. And I'm really sick again. I called him today but he is out of the office!thanks LadyLynn moreVoting Question: My wife suffering from GI pain?
My wife has been suffering from upper middle abdominal pain for over 6 months now. It is clear that the frequency and the intensity of the pain has increased by time. she also noticed a non localized back pain that appears to happen sometimes at night. A 1ry care physician diagnozed her with Ulcer and prescribed omeprazole. Pain decreased but didn't go even after 2 month of 20 mg omeprazole. then he shifted her to pantoprazole 40 mg. Same result. during this time she experienced a tense period in her work, that was the first time we noticed that the pain aggravates with tension and that 80 mg pantoprazole did nothing to it. One day she had this severe pain episode, she couldn't stand it, I took her to the ER, she was given a GI cocktail ( Maalox + lidocaine + belladonna alkaloids + Phenobarbial) and the pain totally disappeared and she was dismissed. she was appointed for endoscopy and surprisingly the gastroenterologist found nothing : " She was 100% clean "that what he said. I wasn't happy about that coz the pain keep coming and I don't trust anybody anymore. These are some hints I think they might be helpful: 1. She was diagnosed with IBS 2 years ago 2. History of + H. Pylori eradicated by the Quadruple therapy (Currently H Pylori is negative) 3. Surprisingly the pain used to respond well to antispasmodics: Alverine ( known as SPASMONAL) dunno if u have it here i the US ( Unfortunately. we ran out of this medication) 4. we couldn't notice any triggering agent : absence or presence of food except for the tension and stress 5. No reflux. no regurgitation no feeling of acidity no indigestion no bloating 6. Pancreatitis and Gall stones were excluded by hospital labs and tests and by absence of symptoms : no fever, no nausea , no vomiting, she has a good appetite, fatty meals don't exacerbate the pain....ect moreResolved Question: Paging Dr. Gregory House?
So a friend of mine fell ill 2 weeks ago. It started with a fever and general malaise on a friday. Has dark urine and light stools. Sunday he gets urinalysis and the results were high bilirubin and urobilinogen. He goes to the ER looking awful still with a fever and shivering. I tell him he probably has gallstones and is going to end up getting his gall bladder removed. They draw tons of blood and by the end of the night the doctor tells him, with no diagnostics of course to back this up "you have fatty liver, gilbert disease (hereditary cause of high bilirubin), and a virus" and discharges him that sunday night. Tuesday morning hes back and checked in at the hospital in essentially quarantine. Still fever, vomiting, face all red, and hyphema (blood in the eye) presumably from straining from coughing and vomiting. Now apparently he has a high white blood cell count, and at least one doctor seems to think his 'rash' may be hepatitis, to which he wasn't vaccinated. They can't find any gallstones, so now I'm thinking Hepatitis B, after a few days it turns out the blood they took was supposed to be tested for all Hepatitis viruses, yet some ER person wrote Hep A on there, so he has so wait even longer for B and C to come back, though B is the only one that really causes this severe an acute illness. Days more go by and it turns out he has no hepatitis of any type, has been endoscoped and had gallstones ruled out. They did a CT of his pancreas, the results of which I'm not really privy to, particularly since trying to get complicated explanations from someone high as a kite on dilaudid isn't easy. They had him on metronidazole first then levofloxacin to cover bacteria. Also protonix for stomach acid and albuterol for breathing. He is still sick after two weeks and the final diagnosis seems to be "you have pancreatitis and a virus" - and that he can never drink alcohol again. The doctor further seems to think that my friend's admission of having had 2 or 3 drinks on the night before getting sick seems to explain everything. Also, my friend has a family friend in a different hospital with apparently the exact same illness right now. My question is what the hell might cause this? No gallstones, no hepatitis. He rarely drinks alcohol and doesn't binge. The viral causes I've seen for pancreatitis are Hepatitis (ruled out), mumps (makes no sense, and he had vaccine) and Epstein-Barr. His lack of any noticeable jaundice or perhaps most importantly - upper right abdominal pain - is quite odd also. Naturally since I was at the bar with him the night before he got sick, at the ER when he first went, and in his hospital room for coughing/vomiting, I'm a wee bit concerned. moreResolved Question: Could This pain be pancreatitis? If not, what does it sounds like for you?
Hi, I am a female, 26, i am not overweight, my only symptom is mild pain in the upper left quadrant of my abdomen that will not go away and mild inflamation on that side about 15 minutes after I eat, the pain goes to my back when I lay down. In the mornings I have no pain nor discomfort until I have the first meal. I read that for pancreatitis they compare the pain to giving birth. My pain is mild enough for me to work and hang out with friends. I have been like that for the past 2 months. A couple of months ago I had a blood test and showed high amylase (145), i had nausea, dizziness, diarrhea, fever. Everything is gone but the pain. I dont drink or smoke. Have been on the contraceptive pill for the past 1.5 years. I stopped for a month to see if it was the cause and still on pain. I cut fat and sugar, eat small amounts and do some excercize whenever I can but still in pain. I feel great except for that pain. Will go to see the doctor tomorrow and ask for an ultrasound. Help!!! moreResolved Question: Why did I get pancreatitis? I have no gallbladder and don't drink.?
I am 9 weeks pregnant and I had pancreatitis this week. I stayed in the hospital overnight and was released the next day since my lipase was back to normal. I had my gallbladder removed a few years back and I never drink alcohol. I don't smoke or do drugs or even take a daily prescription. I'm not overweight and I can't figure this out. I'm paranoid about eating any fat at all now. The meal that set it off was tomato soup and a glass of whole milk. Not exactly a greasy burger and fries. I have a little pain after eating most things now. Oh, at the hospital I asked to see my bloodwork and notice I was low on 3 liver enzymes (alk/phos, alt, asg?) and low for kidney as well, (BUN, Crea)not too much, just a little. My cbc was low so I'm anemic as well, but no one told me and I'd probably never know if I hadn't looked for myself. I feel like crap today, have a low fever and I'm worried. I go back to my doctor in the morning and I want to be well informed. So if anyone has any ideas for me, I'd love to hear it. Please and thank you.Oh, I forgot, I was diagnosed with non-specific colitis a few years ago. I'm not having a flare-up though.Actually in most cases your gallbladder has everything to do with your pancreas. The two most common causes of pancreatitis are gallstones and alcoholism. That's why I mentioned it. moreResolved Question: Acute Gallbladder Disease - Exhausted all the time, swollen lymph nodes in neck, joint pain, weight loss?
I spent a week in the hospital diagnosed with acute cholysistitis (sic), pancreatitis. My WBC was high and I had a fever of 104. Very sick. They said they could not remove my gallbladder as I was too sick (inflamation in liver as well) I have to wait 3 months! In the meatime I am exhausted, have lost 34lbs in 5 weeks, cannot eat anything other than vegetables, fruit and rice, potatoe. NO fat or meat or dairy. My LFT are high and the surgeon said they could not do a laparascopy and would do an open surgery (full cut) which is riskier - infection so I needed to be healthier. But why do I feel sooo sick if only my gallbladder is the issue? I also feel dizzy and unsteady at times but the fatigue is out of this world. Anyone out there gone through this or can offer some insight - I am to "manage the pain" fever, nausea and fatigue until surgery. How come other people get it removed right away?? confused..thanks moreResolved Question: What May My Sister Be Sick With?
She came home today complaining of a bad stomach ache in her upper abdomen area near her rib cage on both sides. She says it hurts to stand up and that her stomach feels like if she "accidently drank a bunch of chlorine in the swimming pool." She does not have a fever and isn't nauseous. My sister is 19 and has had problems with acid reflex. Might her symptoms have something to do with that or could it be something worse (appendicitis, pancreatitis, etc)? She has no done any physical abdominal exercises that would lead to tenderness, nor has she eaten anything spicy or new...just her usual diet.Well, now I come to find that she ate about twenty grapes last night--she's allergic to grapes! i dont know why i cant give someone a best answer but to those who helped before thank you. the cat has been at the vet since about 10 this morning, the vet isnt really contacting my mother as much as she'd like and i'm trying to help her figure out whats wrong. my mom says the cat hasn't eaten in about a day, tries to drink but ends up vomiting clear liquid, seems lathargic, and hasn't had a bowel movement. the vet said it might be pancreatitis and then said it could be fatal, but most of what i've looked up says otherwise, and that it would take quite some time before it gets to that point, and he's only been like this for about a day. oh and if u didnt see my last post he has a 104 fever. thank you in advance for any help/ ideas/ suggestions :) moreResolved Question: For people in the medical field please...?
How long can an adult have a fever of 107 - 109 F. without having any permanent damage. The hospital can't seem to get the fever down and it's been that way for 12 hours now. He was admitted to ICU last Tuesady night with acute pancreatitis, his breathing was not great , so Thursday morning he was put on a ventilator, pneumonia has set in, his cholesterol was over 600 and triglicerides were so high they couldn't measure them at the hospital. They have raised his oxygen to 100% and the ventilator is doing all his breathing for him now. Yesterday morning he had a heart attack and then a seizure in the afternoon. They started dialysis this afternoon also. His pulse rate has been 140-150 for days now. He also has been running a 102 - 103 degree fever for several days, but last night it went up to 107 ...it has not come down any, in fact it has gone up to 109F. Nothing they try will get the fever to come down... how long can someone continue to live with a temp this high?yes my numbers are correct...thats why I'm so concerned. moreResolved Question: been diagnosed with acute pancreatitis about a week ago, have some quetions?
I was in the hospital for about 1 1/2 days. I drank 6 beers on the day I had to go to the hospital, but the doctor said it was uncanny for 6 beers to cause this, so he attributed it to a genetically weak pancreas. I will never drink again to prevent further attacks. I was also drinking a can or two of pepsi everyday, which I will now stop too. Now it's almost a week later, and I still get a very minor pain in the lower abdomen from time to time. It is not always there, and It is VERY minor. I can still do my daily activities and whatnot, but sports and any kind of physical activity that requires running and jumping I cannot do. This pain doesn't come with any other problems, such as fever or nausea. So is this anything to be concerned about? And I know it's illegal, but would smoking cannabis (marijuana) once or twice every one or two months cause further damage to my pancreas? moreResolved Question: pancreatitis?
so, for two months now i have been living with this pain in my abdomen. the pain is in my upper left/middle abdomen and gets worse when i lay flat on my back. its a dull, achy, crampy constant pain. the pain intensifies through out the day and radiates to sides and back to the point where i cannot move.i also have excessive sweating in my arm pits, i get the chills to the point where my teeth literally start chattering and i have a low grade fever..99/100 and i get the hiccups everyday, and not just your normal hiccups, these are the ones that come deep in my abdomen. i have had every test known to man for my stomach and intestines...CT scan, Upper GI w/sb follow through, ultrasound and an endoscopy...nothing. i was put on medication but had to stop it because it was causing me to get dizzy and have double vison. so my question is, does this sound like pancreatitis or something else?yes, i have had blood tests. two mono tests and CBC's...all which came back normal. also i dont know if this would make a difference but, i had the CT Scan and Ultrasound about one week after feeling ill. moreResolved Question: Cough and tightness in chest?
