Resolved Question: How is acute pancreatitis treated?

I've been asking a lot about this condition lately, and I'm sorry if it is starting to get old, but at 9pm at night, you don't have a lot of other sources to go to! How should acute pancreatitis be treated? The reason I ask is because I have been recently diagnosed with it, however not treated, and my GP thinks I have been clinically neglected on the hospitals part, and even gave me a statement I could use if I wish to follow up a complaint for Clinical Negligence. GP says given my medical tests, results and symtoms, that I should have been in hospital, on an intraveinous drip given fluids (Due to the dehydration caused by not being able to keep anything down- or in), and surgical intervention or at least consultation should have taken place. Instead I was sent home with no medication, doctor at the hospital di not beleive it was pancreas related as (In his exact words) "It can not be the pancreas, as you do not drink alcohol or do drugs". He said he consulted with the surgeon on call, but when asked what the sugeon said he would not say anything. He did not give us the surgeons name, and when we requested to see him, he said he was too busy. Anyway, all of that aside, GP (Who has worked many E.Rs) says treatment should have been initiated based on my results, but obviously it wasn't. I'm still having the same symptoms, so obviously it's not just a bug that's taking it's sweet time to pass. How should pancreatitis be treated normally? Thanks, and please no rude comments. more

Resolved Question: help to do peer review for my essay!!! Thankiess?

Help to grade my essay( peer review_ Okay I didnt do it in class but ineed someone to grade my paper on every of the categories below.. If you can please help me because the grade of the essay depends on this peer review too Ill post my essay and after it the peer review questions.. Any help would be very useful and appreciated!! :) thank you Here goes the essay----- Adults are increasingly concerned about teenagers drinking alcohol. They feel that children of such an age are too young to indulge in drinking. There is also a belief that there is a need to oppose American teenagers arguments that the legal drinking age should be lowered in the USA. Alcohol can, in certain circumstances be considered as harmful, and it's consumption should be limited especially by teenagers. Many young people drink due to peer pressure, and by copying friends who are already drinking. In my own opinion I do not feel that the legal drinking age should be lowered, rather maintained at it's present level but there should be more information available for students on the potential harm that excessive drinking can cause. Alcohol is considered by many to be categorised in the same way as drugs due to the adverse effects experienced by over indulgence . It can be harmful to certain of the body's organs, particularly the liver, and it can also adversely affect body growth, a fact not readily known by many teenagers. Drinking is often seen as a solution to problems and as a means to alleviate bad moods and depression. Unfortunately this is not a solution, since the problems will still be there afterwards and could become more serious. There are also drink related risks to one's health that include liver damage, pancreatitis, certain cancers, and literal shrinkage of the brain, all exacerbated by drinking alcohol at a young age. Another fact about drinking alcohol is that by drinking too much you may bring on a state of drunkenness, resulting in an inability to control yourself and a resultant loss of memory. Often people under the influence are unable to remember actions they may have taken whilst in that state. There are also the dangers of lack of inhibition that often foster violence and bad behaviour to those who are drunk, although teenagers often oppose this view since the lack of inhibition gives them false confidence and an unreal braveness that often leads to trouble. Excessive drinking, however, does not demonstrate how brave a person is, in fact the opposite showing a weak personality and a low measure of self esteem. The future depends on the young generation, and there is a risk that it could be damaged by underage drinking. Alcohol poisons our brain, and it slows reactions and is certain to affect school work. Many young adults who drink excessively, tend to drop out of school and thus damage their future prospects. This obviously affects their education, future prospects and employment opportunities and causes frustration. So, in conclusion, I strongly re-iterate that the legal drinking age should not be lowered, and as a resolution to alcohol related problems, I suggest that there should be far more education given to teenagers about the dangers that alcohol abuse can cause, but also about sensible drinking. Such programmes would assist greatly in curbing alcohol abuse amongst teenagers. Resolved Question: when you die what would cause you to bleed from all orphases?

Hello. My best friend just died and I am taking it really har. This is the first death I have ever had to deal with and it's tough because he was 34 and left his 16 year old kid behind who does not have a mother. I was talking with is grandma and she said she found him on his bed bleeding from all orphasis, even his anus, there was a lot of blood. They tried to revive him but could not get a heartbeat. In July 2009 he was diagnosed with pancreatitis and the doctor at the hospital told him if he continued to drink that he would die. He slowed down conciderably. He was an alcoholic, but again was only 34. In the last month he started complaining about terrible abdominal pain, unmanageable abdomainal pain. I did not ever ask in what place of his abdomin was the pain. He did claim that he was urinating blood but did not tell me how much or little and, unfortunately, I didn't ask. The day before he died his grandma said he was working on his truck all day and seemed just fine, she did not mention how he acted the day he died before his death. He used to be addicted to Oxy Cotton, and from what he told me he did not do it anymore, however, I cannot trust that. I know he was doing something a few times a day...mostly at night for about 2 to 3 weeks strait. Everytime I would talk to him he would complain about pain in his stomach and about 4 days before he died was the first time I heard about him ever peeing blood. For those 2 to 3 weeks strait he claimed he was taking 3mg of xanex. Again I know he was messed up when I would talk to him but I cannot guarantee nor am I convinced that it was xanex or jut xanex. He was so messed up when he claimed he was on it that he would have the same symptoms as someone who had been drinking too much. He could have been on a few pain killers (vikodin, perkaset, etc..), it could have been xanex, or it could have been drinking, or it could have been oxy cotton. What I am wondering, is what did he die from...just some possibilities. He bled out of all his orphasis even his anus, so I was thinking maybe he dies from a stomach anyurysm, or liver failure? I just need some closure. We got the autopsy report back today and it suggested further investigation for toxicology (to see about drugs and alcohol and to check the state of his organs), I wont get those results back for another 4 to 6 weeks. I am needing closure and was wondering if anyone educated in this field may know what he ay have died from with the symptoms I have given to you. Any help is appreciated. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: I believe my fathers death was a product of involuntary euthanasia need advice?

My father was very ill. He had chronic pancreatitis, copd, diabetes, and has been living with these conditions for the last 8 years with it starting from the pancreatitis. He has been married to my stepmom for only 10 of these 8 years and it is very obvious that he has been a burden for her. He has been in and out of the hospital for the last couple of weeks but my main concern is the events that happened 3 days before his death (my father was only 47). My stepmother kept making comments about how she wanted them to just stop treating his diabetes and remove his oxygen help (he'd been living with for 4 years). I explained to her that that would be murder it is the hospitals obligation to continue to treat what they had been treating before. My father was still eating on his own, going to the bathroom, and drinking on his own but, was heavily sedated. In his last day of life in the hospital there was talk of my step mom wanting to set him up with hospice and was asking questions about what she could do (take him off oxygen, stop checking his sugar etc). Before she left for the night she requested they give my father something for the pain (pancreatitis) and they gave him a dose of morphine. As soon as she left his stats started dropping quickly. His o2 saturation was at 33 and pulse had dropped to 67. The nurse came in checked on him and was going to clean him up cause he had soiled himself. I accepted as did my sister that it was close (not realizing the morphine could be the cause) and when they moved him around it woke him up enough to pick up all his sats. I called my step mom and told her what happened and she came back to the hospital. We waited a whole 7 hours with no change he was very sedated and non responsive from the drugs but stats were fine and showing no signs of discomfort or pain. The nurse had told me too that she thought it was the morphine that sent him over the edge. So after 7 hours of nothing...my step mom talked to the nurse even though my dad was having no pain and asked for more morphine. She also told the nurse not to treat his sugar that was getting dangerously low. She didn't even let the nurse take it but, when the nurse left she took it and it was 68. I explained how I was very uncomfortable with giving him more pain meds and not treating the sugar but was ignored. She started talking about taking him off his regular oxygen mask too and I was very much against it so she did not. This was about 2am when the first dose of pain meds was given (with no sign of pain) somehow an hour later when more family arrived he woke up and started talking to everyone and was awake and alert for about 10 min and my step mom after that ordered MORE morphine "for pain" that he wasn't having (he also had just had a dose an hour before) that was about 4am his breathing started to get slower after that but he was relaxed. The nurse kept coming in and asking my step mom if she was ready for "that" twice...finally about 530 am my step mom said yes. I immediatley said WHAT IS THAT! and she said oh, your dad is getting a little anxious so its some anti anxitey meds. ( still he was not moving, moaning, his stats were not showing a sign of pain, he was not gasping for air just breathing very slow) he passed an hour later. I need answers! I truly feel that this was not ethical nor legal. She was ofcourse being his wife his medical power of attorney. However I didn't think it gave her the right to play GOD so to speak. Morphine is very risky for copd patients from what i've read and apparently she was "friends" or the nurse was "a customer" of hers and even joked so are you going to let me cut in line now? I believe she came in and did say I got a doctors ok to give pain meds every 30 min. as needed which i thought was weird cause my father was not in pain?? And, if the doctor knew the effects of the pain meds on a copd paitient why would he allow such a high dosage to be given so frequently? I mentioned today I wanted a copy of his medical records and she got very defensive and said "what do you want those for"? and I said I just strongly feel like something is wrong and she said well "i don't want to talk about this right now!" 4 doses of a powerful narcotic and a dose of a sedative/"anti anxiety" to be administered within 3 hours seems excessive for someone sleeping? more

Resolved Question: had my gallbladder removed two days ago, will this diarrhea go away?

I am a 30 year old female who eats ate a healthy diet prior to surgery. I had terrible gallstones that were causing pancreatitis, so the doctors opted to remove my gallbladder. I arrived home yesterday and since then I have had diarrhea every time I eat. It isn't necessarily immediate or urgent and isn't like the diarrhea I have had before. It is basically fluid-like. I was on a liquid diet for several days while in the emergency room and in the hospital so this may be a factor. Also, I have never really taken prescription drugs and while in the hospital I was on high doses of antibiotics, pain killers, jello and food I don't normally eat, etc. Is it likely that my digestive system will return to normal soon and that I am just flushing out the junk from the hospital? It seems to occur even if I eat bread and water. Also, I don't have any cramping or discomfort, just gurgling in my stomach and there is almost no odor when I go to the bathroom. I guess that is one bonus! more

Voting Question: life story (not really) just some help needed?

right where do i start ive had a rollercoaster ride in health . . ive been having many problems with my health . 5 years ago i was rushed to hospital with pancreatitis over alcohol and have had a long battle with alcohol since but ive got to a stage where i dont drink that much prob once a month and a limited amount . ive also had problems sleeping i wake up around 7 times a night with what feels like a headache and my eyes stinging . im also very bloated and constipated all the time i used to get constipated for a couple of days after drinking and then get diarroea for a day after that then back to normal till the next night out but now its just constipation with awfull smelling gas . i have been told by my doctor that im depressed which i agreed to a certain extent but ive tried different drugs but ive never seen a huge difference im now on the drug lexapro 20 mg but sometimes i feel better from them but sometimes i feel worse . ive also been giving xanax just a few for any time i get anxios cos sometimes at night i feel so angry for no reason and dont want to talk to anyone when i feel like that and if my girlfriend starts asking me questions i feel like telling her to shut up cos my head just feels awful and i want to fix this cos when im in good form im very easy going and me and my girlfriend are great together but when i feel bad i could sit there for days and sit in silence . i do feel down a lot and i could be in good humour one min and then start feeling anxios the next . another reason why ive cut out drink as much as i can is cos when i drink i just get drunk way too easy for anyones liking. when i was 16 i was spiked with lsd and felt horrible after it but im 27 now could that have caused a problem . to add to all that the last fem months ive been having problems with my back and neck they are really sore and i think these might be leading to pains in the back of my head . i also cant concentrate cos its like mant thoughts are racing through my mind and songs start playing in my head or i could just daydream out of no where .on top of that i went back playing football this season to try get fit and i did but i trained as hard as anyone but my body just didnt feel up to it no matter how hard i trained . and it also didnt help that my legs are so thin and i cant seem to strengthen them up . i also get very lightheaded and sometimes when im walking down the street i feel like i just walked off the edge of the footpath down off the little step but im still walking on the flat it just feels like my foot went down lower than the path . if i stare at an object it looks like its moving rather than just sitting like an statue .i have appointments for my back with the hospital and with a physio any a phycologist but the waiting lists are long and also my girlfreind is 39 weeks pregnant so i want to change asap . i think a lot of people are starting to think im a hypo buts just so frustrating and im always looking for people on the same wave length as me who feel the same pain as me so they understand . .im starting to think this is the best its going to get and try to just accept it as part of my life . my body just feels so drained all the time i cant even clench my fist so ive started doing weights to see if that helps . my diet is ok but its not the healtiest but not the worst i do eat chips fish burgers pasta salad chocolate and a range of other stuff . . i used to drink prune juice for the constpation and it worked great but now when i could drink a full bottle of prune juice and it just leaves me with very bad wind . im also starting to try ibs tablets . . .any how ive rambled on for long enought i would really appreciate it if any one could read my problems and give me some advice on at least one of the issues .. thanks so muchthanks for your answer im sure ill do something along those lines but i would love some more pointers if anyone can contribute thanks more

Voting Question: How long will alcohol be detected in my blood?

So here's the story. I've had pancreatitis several times, but it has never seemed to correlate to drinking. I know that alcohol abuse can cause pancreatitis, and I stopped drinking after the first time I got it, only to get it twice more, even when abstaining from alcohol altogether. I have had it a total of 6 or 7 times, only once after drinking. So my point is, I get pancreatitis and it has nothing to do with alcohol consumption (they haven't figured out yet why I get it, though I have been told it might be Sphincter of Oddi Dysfunction). One time, I was having an attack of pancreatitis and went to the hospital, of course. I happened to get the symptoms in the middle of a night at the bar. When the doctor realized I had been drinking, he pretty much told me that he thought I was giving myself pancreatitis on purpose (by drinking) so that I could come to the hospital and get strong narcotic pain medicine. So he decided to not give me ANY pain medicine. For the record, that is the only time I have ever gotten pancreatitis within a week of drinking. Well, I've been drinking tonight, and I feel like I'm going to have another attack. I have the warning signs. But if it does turn into a full-blown attack, I'm afraid that they'll detect alcohol in my blood again and do the same thing - not give me any pain meds, even though it gets REALLY painful. I'm female, 5'3", and weigh about 120 pounds. I've had about 5 shots of Parrot Bay, which is only 21% alcohol (42 proof), as opposed to most liquors, which are usually 80 proof. I've had these drinks from between 8:00pm and 10:30pm. My question is... does anybody have a good estimation of when the alcohol will no longer be detectable in my blood? I realize the doctors might not even look for it, but just in case they do... I'd honestly rather wait extra hours in pain before going to the hospital than have everyone think I'm some kind of drug addict or something. Thanks a lot. more

Resolved Question: How much nutritional value in Lactated Ringers?

My Sheltie Jake is pushing 14 yrs old. Over the last 9 months he's had a series of health problems, the start of which was an anaerobic bacterial infection in an anal gland, that was initially misdiagnosed, and was difficult to treat (at least 8 different, expensive antibiotics over several months.) During one vet visit they injected him with a cocktail of drugs that caused pancreatitis -- on a Friday, as [bad] luck would have it. He was on the verge of renal failure when I took him to the ER vet very early Sunday morning. So anyways, after spending several thousand dollars on countless vet visits we're past all that... Along the way I've learned how to do a few things to keep him healthy, for instance, I check him for dehydration, and give him subcutaneous fluids if he need it. (The last time he needed it was probably 3 months ago.) He's drinking plenty of water, but the problem is his appetite comes and goes, and is slowly but surely losing weight -- 5 years ago he weighed 21 lbs, he's now just under 14 lbs. In a few hours we'll be into day 3 since he ate last. So I'm wondering if he'll get any calories out of a dose of sub-cu Lactated Ringers? I called my vet to ask this question, but they want me to bring him in. As of the first of the year I lost half my income to cut-backs forced by the bad economy, I can't really even afford the blood-work they want to do -- the sad fact of the matter is, if he gets real sick again, he is screwed. The best I can do for him is to try to prevent that. I know that if he doesn't get enough nutrition it will lower his immunities; I can feel that his fat reserves are gone. He is still alert and loving, even playful on a daily basis, I see no indication that he is in any pain. I understand that he is approaching the high end of his life expectancy. So the simple question is, will Lactated Ringers help him any if he is under-nourished, but not dehydrated? (Sorry this was so long, thanks for taking time to read it.)Well he's eating again, for a couple of days now. I scrambled an egg and mixed it with his food; he picked most of the egg out, then shortly after threw-up a little, but about an hour after that he went back to his dish and ate his food (Innova) and that stayed down. So it would seem we're out of the woods... for now, anyway.bob: about the kidney bloodwork, that's exactly what my vet wants to do, but my question is, to what possible end? As the basis to recommend expensive further diagnostics, surgery and/or prescriptions, that I can't afford? Or else, given my lack of finances, so they can tell me it's time to end his life? I guess if I knew the point, I might be more in on the deal... as long as that point considered the limits imposed by the harsh reality of my financial situation.miaugh, I tried to get CareCredit but they turned me down (I have no revolving credit accounts -- living debt-free makes me a bad risk, I guess.) I then got a close friend who has a FICO score of 850 to co-sign: once again, shot down in flames! So, from my limited experience it would seem that the only people who qualify for CareCredit would be unlikely to actually need it. more

Protein-calorie malnutrition: Causes and incidence (Professional Guide to Diseases (Eighth Edition)) Both kwashiorkor (edematous PCM) and marasmus (nonedematous PCM) are common in underdeveloped countries and in areas in which dietary amino acid content is insufficient to satisfy growth requirements. Kwashiorkor typically occurs at about age 1, after infants are weaned from breast milk to a protein-deficient diet of starchy gruels or sugar water, but it can develop at any time during the formative years. Marasmus affects infants ages 6 to 18 months as a result of breast-feeding failure, or a debilitating condition such as chronic diarrhea. In industrialized countries, PCM may occur secondary to chronic metabolic disease that decreases protein and calorie intake or absorption, or trauma that increases protein and calorie requirements. In the United States, PCM is estimated to occur to some extent in 50% of elderly people in nursing homes. Those who aren’t allowed anything by mouth for an extended period are at high risk of developing PCM. Conditions that increase protein-calorie requirements include severe burns and injuries, systemic infections, and cancer (accounts for the largest group of hospitalized patients with PCM). Conditions that cause defective utilization of nutrients include malabsorption syndrome, short-bowel syndrome, and Crohn’s disease. Resolved Question: My 7 year old blue Merle Collie died from pancreatitis?

To make a long story short.. I took my dog to and from the vet for the longest time. The first time I took her to the vet was when the vet told me that she had something wrong with her pancreas. The vet told me to put her on low fat foods and to not feed her any other scrap foods. I followed what she told me to do for about 3 months. Everything was fine, until I started to notice that my dog didn't eat as much as she used to and everytime she drank water she would throw it up in minutes. I let it go on for about a week because at first, I just thought it was because she drank her water too fast. But then she looked very, very sick. Her eyes look like they were sinking into her face, she was really dehydrated. So I took her to vet again, and the vet told me that I should leave my dog there for the night. The vet called me every now and then to let me know how things were going. The first phone call she said that she was doing great. She was eating, drinking, and whenever they took her outside she was running around. She told me that she had my dog on antibiotics, and everything was working out great. That night around 9 or 10 I got a pretty upsetting phone call from my vet. She told me that my dog had passed away. What could have caused this if she was doing perfectly fine during the day? Could it be too much drugs that the vets were giving her? I've been a wreck ever since I found out, and I don't know what to do. A part of me is blaming the vets for something, and I don't know why. I feel horrible for putting the blame on someone. I even blame myself for not bringing her to the vets sooner. I feel so guilty. The one thing that my dog hated the most was to be alone, and that's how she died. Alone. Does anyone know how I can cope with this? more

Resolved Question: Metformin information?

Does any healthcare professional or patient on this drug know anything about its side effects and overall effectiveness? It is a 'complete metabolic' drug, according to my endocrinologist, who prescribed this to me because extensive blood work examining my endocrine system after an episode of acute pancreatitis which left me hospitalized for 5 days (birth control pills caused this) showed a number of things that were out of normal range. One thing was my testosterone level. She asked me if my periods were regular...I told her no because they never were before I started taking BC for acne and after being told to stop taking them immediately i wasn't having periods at all (and still am not). Apparently this drug will help to lower my testosterone levels to improve my skin and restore my periods and make them extremely regular. Anyone know anything about this or have personal experiences? Did it work? How long until periods became normal again? Any weight loss with this? (If so, how much?) more

Resolved Question: My daughter died of acute pancreatitis due to ethanolism. but had only start abusing alcohol about a year ago?

Her problem started at about 21 when she started abuse vicadin, which she did for about 10 months, she was then clean for about 8 months and then started abusing Tussinex which she was weened off of. 4 months later she turned to alcohol. Could the other drugs have affected her pancreas, or do they just assume it was cause by alcohol because of her history(which they where told about)? more

Resolved Question: Pancreatitis, don't quite fit into any causitive category, but a bit in some ... Any GI's out there?

6 weeks ago, I went to my PD with what I thought was severe heartburn. I went to pharm. and he suggested Pepcid. I took it, no luck in an hour (like he said). I called and asked PD how long Pepcid takes to take it away, she said an hour, I said it's been 4 hours and I was in agony. Severe abdominal pain, some vomiting, low grade fever. I had what I thought was the flu for 3 days prior (no pain, just didn't feel well, diarr and low grade fever. She said come in. She took a blood test ... Highly elevated Amylase and Lipase, somewhat elevated ALT, AST. Had weekly blood tests since then, and it's been going down. Nearly normal Amylase, still 3 times normal Lipase (which is much lower than it was... nearly 3000). I read the following on internet as far as causes: 1) Alcoholism: "Alcohol is the leading culprit. Usually, it takes several years of heavy drinking -- such as a 12-pack of beer of every day." I drink, but not more than 3-4 drinks per night, 3-4 nights per week (if that!) however, I had a life altering even a few weeks before attack and did drink a bit more (nightly, maybe 4 drinks), but no 'binge drinking'. Rarely drunk more than 4 times in the last year, no hangovers. 2) Gallstones: never had a symptom. 3) heridedary: nope, nobody. 4) Meds: rare cases of Lamictal and Ativan have been reported "after market, and reported on 'compassionate please' cases. I am on both. (BTW, Lamictal was raised from 150 mg to 200 mg 1 wk before attack, and due to stress, went from 1 ativan per day to 2-3). 5) no traumas. The pain was severe (I have little tolerance for pain), but not enough that I felt ER was necessary. Nor did she. I was still walking around and doing what shopping I had to do, etc. OTC painkillers helped. Background: 48 yrs old, F, somewhat healthy diet. I feel fine now. Having another blood test Monday. Also have history of ovarian problems.... recently, cysts, fibroids. Any known relation? Any herbal/alternative cures or remedies? Is this permanent? She says never another drink of alcohol, not even cough syrup. Is that true? Even socially, a couple here and there? Due to my two year history of drugs (antidepressants, Lamictal, Xanax, Ativan ... all prescribed by Dr's), I have also taken Milk Thistle and Alpha Lipoic Acid to counteract the med's effect on liver. Just can't find enough general information on this on the internet. Just doom, gloom, not so great mortality rates, and a future of horror to live with ... kidney dialysis, heart failure, liver failure, extreme pain, narcotic addiction, surgeries. Please advise... Thank you and God bless.  more

Resolved Question: What if a drug is not listed to cause a problem until 'after market' reporting?

I got severe acute pancreatitis a couple of weeks ago, which often results in chronic pancreatitis when it is severe (mine was!), and do not fall under the categories of what causes it. I'm a moderate drinker, no family history, no trauma to the pancreas, no gallbladder problems. It does list some drugs as a cause, but not Lamictal, which I have been on for nearly a year, as well as recent use of Naproxin. A few weeks ago, my Lamictal was raised from 150m to 200m. A little research on the internet shows that Lamictal and Naproxin is listed as a potential side effect, although not made public or on their fact sheet, since reports of it being a potential side effect were not established until 'after marketing' (after FDA approval and marketed to the public) and the company says not enough data exists to establish causation, but has been reported in cases of pancreatitis. Is there a potential lawsuit here, since pancreatitus is potentially fatal, and causes lifelong possible complications (kidney failure ..., heart failure and damage to other organs) as well as permanent lifestyle changes (diet, no fat, no sodium, etc)? It often leads to other attacks that are very painful and disabling for several days to weeks, which is lifelong. It's listed as a potential side effect even on their own 'cached' website, as well as drugs.com, rx.com, etc.  more

Resolved Question: What would cause unilateral kidney failure in a 25-year old male?

My brother is a 25-year old veteran with no history of kidney disease. He does not drink (stopped in November but was never an alcoholic), has no history of drug abuse (minor social use of marijuana), and no family history of kidney problems. He was hospitalized 3 weeks ago and was diagnosed with pancreatitis, enlarged spleen, and swollen kidneys. Now he has been told his right kidney is dead but 5 times the size of his left kidney. What could have caused this (I hear talk of PKD but no one in my family has ever had problems with this before)? Also, what is the ideal treatment? How long can he go with a dead organ in his body? more

Resolved Question: Is there a connection between chronic pancreatitis and high cholesterol?

I have chronic pancreatitis. I am not an alcoholic. My surgeon believes that I was born with this condition, I am 45 yrs. old and I just found out last year. I am controlling the pain, by being on a very low fat diet, and so far it is working. I have had one major attack after my ercp last July. Horrible... My surgeon was going to operate(the whipple surgery) but after I had a horrible drug interaction(from drugs my home town hospital administered during my pancreatic attack) he changed his mind and does not want to operate. My question arises as I am on a low fat diet (usually under 25 grams of total fat in a day) My family doctor did bloodwork and tells me I have high cholesterol. I am to watch my fats and carbohydrates. I don't see how my cholesterol can be high, when I probably have never eaten healthier in my life. That is why I want to know if somehow chronic pancreatitis can cause high cholesterol? Thanks so much for feed back. bak more
