I don't know whether I'm just being a hypochondriac or not, but I've been having these weird symptoms lately. For the past few weeks, I've been having weird dull pains around my right upper abdomen, just below my chest and sometimes below my ribcage. I sometimes get a crampy feeling on my left side as well, and this has been going on for a few months, though it is far less persistent. For the past two days I've been getting this colicky weird pain on my lower right quadrant, and sometimes I can feel it in my lower left. Also, I've been itching a lot recently. I don't know if this is psychosomatic or not, can anybody enlighten me as to if that's possible or not? I lost weight a few weeks after I stopped lifting in June and July, going from 146 pounds to about 138, but I think it's stagnated since then (who knows, maybe I've even gained some this month). My appetite's been odd, it's there, but it's different than it used to be. I get upper cramp-like localized back pains from time to time, sometimes parts of my arms and legs feel cramped for no reason as well. And just a few hours ago, after eating a fatty meal, I had greasy diarrhea (I do have IBS, but I don't remember it ever giving my fatty stools (this is the first time I've seen this). Also, I feel more fatigued than usual. I can still exercise just as well as I used to, but if I'm not being active I feel like falling asleep. I don't know what's going on. I'm not scared of any other type of cancer except pancreatic. I heard it can effect people of all ages, even if it is rare. Does this sound anything like it? I don't have nausea or vomiting. My pain isn't severe, it's typically mild. I'm not yellow, my stools aren't pale, my urine isn't dark (but I read that itching is an early sign of jaundice). I can't tell if I have an enlarged spleen or liver, nothing's constantly tender, and my Dr. didn't feel anything out of the ordinary when I got my physical a week ago. Sometimes, though, my upper right or lower right abdomen feels mildly uncomfortable, though this does not last. The pain in my upper quadrant is worse on some days than others (it was worse yesterday than today, and the day before wasn't too bad). Also, the pain seems to react to stress. I have no family history of any type of cancer as far as I'm aware, no diabetes, no pancreatitis. I don't smoke, I don't drink often (and when I do it doesn't cause me problems). I'm a white 20 year old male, around 140 lbs. I do have a predisposition to Crohn's Disease, and I have acid reflux. Does this sound like Crohn's at all? Does it even sound like a gallbladder issue? Can someone point me in the right direction? I can't see anyone until Monday, I'd rather not go to the ER, I wanna go out and have fun tonight and if this is constantly on my mind I doubt that'll happen. I'd greatly appreciate any input. Despite my terrible discomfort, I refused to accept that there might be something wrong with me, and would not seek treatment. I know now that I should have been less determined to suffer in silence and more willing to accept help. Finally, my parents insisted on bringing the matter to the attention of a physician. I was tested, over a period of several weeks, for colon cancer, Crohn’s Disease, intestinal obstructions, diverticulitis, ulcerative colitis, gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, Heliocobacter pylori (commonly known as ulcer), celiac sprue (commonly known as wheat allergy), lactose intolerance, gallstones, bile duct stones, sclerosing cholangitis (the narrowing of the bile ducts), “Sphincter of Oddi” dysfunction and pancreatitis. You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases. Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is sometimes known as spastic colon, nervous colon, nervous stomach, mucous colitis and spastic colitis, and is distinguished by abnormal bowel habits, such as diarrhea (loose stools), constipation or sometimes, as in my own case, both. It is well known to experts in this field that periods of stress can intensify the severity of IBS. I have certainly found my busy schedule of six honors/AP classes, Varsity field hockey, swimming and track teams, performing lead roles in three consecutive Spring Musicals, volunteering at the local animal shelter, tutoring at-risk children, and working three evenings a week plus all day Saturday at The Gap to be, at times, stressful, but of course it is impossible to say what has caused me to be afflicted with this very horrible syndrome. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS or spastic colon) is a diagnosis of exclusion. It is a functional bowel disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowel habits in the absence of any detectable organic cause.[1] In some cases, the symptoms are relieved by bowel movements.[2] Diarrhea or constipation may predominate, or they may alternate (classified as IBS-D, IBS-C or IBS-A, respectively). IBS may begin after an infection (post-infectious, IBS-PI), a stressful life event, or onset of maturity without any other medical indicators. Although there is no cure for IBS, there are treatments that attempt to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments, medication and psychological interventions. Patient education and a good doctor-patient relationship are also important. Several conditions may present as IBS including celiac disease, Fructose malabsorption,[3] mild infections, parasitic infections like giardiasis, several inflammatory bowel diseases, functional chronic constipation, and chronic functional abdominal pain. In IBS, routine clinical tests yield no abnormalities, though the bowels may be more sensitive to certain stimuli, such as balloon insufflation testing. The exact cause of IBS is unknown. The most common theory is that IBS is a disorder of the interaction between the brain and the gastrointestinal tract, although there may also be abnormalities in the gut flora or the immune system. IBS does not lead to more serious conditions in most patients. But it is a source of chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms, and it increases a patient's medical costs, and contributes to work absenteeism. Researchers have reported that the high prevalence of IBS, in conjunction with increased costs produces a disease with a high societal cost. It is also regarded as a chronic illness and can dramatically affect the quality of a sufferer's life. In fact, doctors do not know what causes IBS, or why people who share my disease feel the need to have a bowel movement soon after eating, causing diarrhea, or why the prolonged spasm of the large intestine causes stool to stay in one area for too long and get dried out, resulting in small hard stools (constipation). I'll try to make this short. I had my Gallbladder removed 1 yr and 7 months ago and I'm still not normal. I got really sick before I got it out and it took them 2 months to figure out that my GB wasn't functioning anymore. I got it out on Jan 6th 2009. I was so sick before I got it out that I lost 12 lbs and could barely eat anything at all. Some days I would have no more than a few saltines and sips of water. Here I am nearly 2 yrs post-op and I'm still not right!!! I'm way better than I was, but something is still wrong. I'm able to eat again, but I suffer from several problems. I have constipation about 50% of the time and another 20% of the time its just irregular. I have bloating, abdominal pain above my belly button that sometimes radiates around to my back, my mouth will sometimes get watery, I will sometimes burp a lot, I'll feel sick to my stomach, and occasionally, I'll be downright nauseous and have to lay down and try not to get sick. I have an Endoscopy done before surgery as well as a Barium X-ray which were normal, I also had an ultrasound and a CT scan before surgery. I had a scan done after surgery as well to check and make sure no gallstones were blocking any bile ducts and I was found to be normal. I'm taking Priolsec every day in the morning as well. I've had tons of blood work done, both before and after surgery with no signs of anything wrong. I've been back to the Gastro Dr and my regular Dr a number of times after surgery and nothing can be found wrong. I'm having another Endoscopy on Tue to check my stomach again. Its so bad that its starting to greatly impact my life and normal activities. I can eat, but I can't eat whatever I want and I can't eat normal amounts like everyone else. Does anyone have any clue as to be what could be wrong other than GERD, a stomach ulcer, Celiac, Gallstones, Pancreatitis or being Lactose? All of those things have already been proven to not be the problem. more

You can imagine how relieved I was to learn that I had none of these terrible diseases. Finally, I received the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). IBS is sometimes known as spastic colon, nervous colon, nervous stomach, mucous colitis and spastic colitis, and is distinguished by abnormal bowel habits, such as diarrhea (loose stools), constipation or sometimes, as in my own case, both. It is well known to experts in this field that periods of stress can intensify the severity of IBS. I have certainly found my busy schedule of six honors/AP classes, Varsity field hockey, swimming and track teams, performing lead roles in three consecutive Spring Musicals, volunteering at the local animal shelter, tutoring at-risk children, and working three evenings a week plus all day Saturday at The Gap to be, at times, stressful, but of course it is impossible to say what has caused me to be afflicted with this very horrible syndrome. In fact, doctors do not know what causes IBS, or why people who share my disease feel the need to have a bowel movement soon after eating, causing diarrhea, or why the prolonged spasm of the large intestine causes stool to stay in one area for too long and get dried out, resulting in small hard stools (constipation). As of today, palliative treatments are only in the experimental stage, and the hard truth is that there is no cure for IBS. It has been very difficult for me to accept this diagnosis at my young age. I do not know what the future will hold for me and other IBS patients, and I understand that I may be facing a long battle, but I am committed to facing this challenge with the same determination I have faced every other challenge in my life. i'm 17 and my dad is 49 i've always been like a daddies girl. he's always smoked and last year he got pancreatitis through alcohol and quit alcohol however he still drinks now and again even though he shouldn't. i like to be healthy so i try and remind him that he can still make small changes to make himself feel better although he can't reverse the damage. he has a slipped disk in his neck which causes him lots of pain. and i think he uses alcohol and smoking as a way of coping or something. the point is, my sister has autism and is a handful and im not close to my mom, so i'm scared of just how alone i'll be when he does die, he told me today that he doesn't have long, i love my dad he's never violent and always gets me and my sister everything we need, i just really dont want him to die even though i know it's going to happen eventually please help i feel so down. i dont know why im thinking like this im never normally sad :( thanks for the help more

OK, I am a 16 year old male, weight 135 pounds, height 68 inches an have been having peculiar symptoms that have have been plaguing me for the last month and a half. Now for the symptoms: -loss of appetite (terrible in the morning but more recently recovers in the afternoon; often accompanied by nausea) -fatigue/ lightheaded -pain in stomach (burning feeling in stomach mainly but rarely in chest) -squeezing or gagging feeling in throat (not very severe but often exacerbates nausea) Now for some background info: It all started when I went to a camp in Washington DC. This was my first time flying alone so obviously I was a little nervous but I had been to other similar/longer camps on my own with little to no problems in previous years. Starting from day one, I could not eat a single bite of my food without being overcome by intense nausea. In the first two days the nausea and stomach pain were intense but very distinct and different than a virus like the stomach flu. On the second day after around three PM my pains and nausea were gone and I believed that I was cure (though I was fare from it). This pain and nausea recurred each day after that, beginning in the morning very severe and slowly waning throughout the day until I went to bed. These symptoms quickly were accompanied by Dizziness, Lightheadedness, fatigue, and tightening of the throat often when I would become nervous or anxious, or when I would sit in a lecture hall. Around day eight this became so bad that I actually passed out in the middle of a lecture though I was not dehydrated or even standing. Before I had left for camp I had eaten a whole jar of peepers in one sitting a few nights before as well as quickly shifting my sleeping patterns from sleeping at 3 in the morning till Noon to sleeping from 11 at night to 7 in the morning. At the very end of the camp before I could fly home I passed out in the airport and was taken to the Emergency Room. They did an Xray, CT scan, and several blood tests finding little to no evidence or reason for my symptoms. They blamed the feinting on vasovagal syncope (basically they said that the stress and fear of becoming sick in the lecture hall coupled with my "starvation" caused me to have a panic attack. My body then tried to lower my blood pressure to the point where I passed out). They said that I may have been suffering from gastritis do to the peppers I had eaten (though I have a tolerance to peppers and have done this before). The doctors ruled out obstruction, virus, and pancreatitis It has been a month and a half and my symptoms have not gone. I am taking the maximum dose of Zantac (acid reducer) along with around six tums a day with little avail against my pain and nausea. I believe that the lightheaded feelings may indeed be vasovagal because now even when doing simple things such as driving or doing to the mall, I begin to have a panic attack (probably do to the horrible experience i had at camp for two weeks). I still wake up feeling nauseated, with little appetite and feel lightheaded before lunch (around 11). I now beggin to feel better after eating lunch though it is sometimes difficult to keep lunch down. Do you have any diagnosis of what I have or any way to treat it. I am going to boarding school in a week and if this is not cured, my life will become a living nightmare. Voting Question: stomach ulcer or something else?

Hi. i don't know if its s stomach ulcer or not... but from last Monday, I've had serious pain in my stomach. the night before i had been out drinking so i'm assuming that was the cause, or at least contributed.. its now Saturday and i haven't been able to eat or drink anything(except water) since Monday. If i try to eat, the pain kicks in, which is unbearable... I've been to my GP and was put on medication, which did very little, next day the pain got to bad and i was brought to hospital, they thought it was pancreatitis, but after a few tests and an x ray, found out it is just an ulcer..but sometimes it really doesn't behave like one The pain is at its worst just after I drink something, even water.. its like extremely bad heartburn, and at this stage its just annoying me cause i'm perfectly healthy otherwise, but because of the pain i cant eat.. when i'm not drinking water or even saliva, the pain seems to fade. but once i drink again it comes straight back. any information on what i should do or take to help will be much appreciated, thanks. Resolved Question: pancreatitis in pregnancy. what can i do? uk only for medical advice?

I was diagnosed with pancreatitis when I was 17 through binge drinking. Somthing I am not proud of. That was 10 years ago now. Since then I have had two children. One in 2007 which involved no problems. Tthe next in 2008 which my pancreatitis returned towards the last few weeks of my pregnancy. This caused me to be induced to give birth on my due date as they worried I would go over. Since then I have had good health and no other flare ups. That was until I was 10 weeks pregnant when I was adnitted to hospital with my 2nd flare up. I am now 21 weeks pregnant and have been admitted on 2 other occasions in the past 2 weeks for 4 days each time. I have been informed that my condition is now chronic and there is not much else that can be done for me at least until the baby is born. I have been perscribed tramadol as I am allergic to codiene and need a stronger painkiller than paracetamol. However these are not usually recommended during pregnancy as the effects are unclear. This in itself is a worry and I wanted to know if anyone else has been in this position or has medical experience to suggest healthier forms of pain relief or natural therapies I could try. I would like to make it clear I am now a responsible adult I do not drink even on special occasions. I live a healthy lifesttyle and was told that the position I am in is rare and had no idea this condition would worsen when I decided to concieve again. Resolved Question: Pancreatitis - cause unknown?

I have been having what I now know are acute pancreatitis attacks for three months. It got so bad that it hurt to breathe and I gave in and had to go to the ER in the middle of the night. They took blood and said my pancreas is swollen and something to do with my liver (I dunno, they said that they can tell it's pancreatitis because of something to do with the liver?). They did an ultrasound but no gallstones showed up. They did an MRI today and it came back normal as well. I do not drink, smoke, or do drugs, at all. The attacks come on randomly and have been getting longer and worse. One doctor here says he would suggest I have my gallbladder removed tomorrow anyway and that there's probably just really tiny stones, but has no proof of it. The other doctor says he would wait and see if it happens again. How likely is it really to be gallstones? If they were so tiny that the MRI didn't pick them up, wouldn't they have passed on their own? Wouldn't they have been collecting at this point to cause so many problems, so that they would show up? Any advice?It isn't a serious medical question. I have had multiple opinions from doctors now. I am just hoping to hear from others who have gone in for pancreatitis and the cause was not determined. Just like I'm asking my friends and family for their opinions, I'm hoping to hear from others with similar experiences. I do not want to have surgery when the doctor says he "has no proof" and the other doctor disagrees with him but can't give me ANY cause himself. I am in the hospital ATM. I had a c-section four months ago. I started having severe pain that I couldn't detrmine whether it was in my upper stomach or back. Generally it was more noticable in my back and I figured it was from not being used to carrying a baby around 24/7. It would happen once every week or two, lasting between twenty minutes to several hours. It would often extend up into my right shoulder. About two weeks ago I got what seemed like a bladder infection. I had a constant strong urge to pee, but could barely go, with a strong burning pain in my urethra after I emptied in my bladder. The pain this time was similar but in my lower back extending down my left hip. I vomitted constantly the first morning. I made a dr appointment but couldn't get in for two days. I started cranberry pills and everything went away, so I cancelled my appointment. Thursday at 3ami woke up to severe pain in my upper right abdomen and radiating across my upper back. For 30 hours I threw up everything I ate within an hour. I sat in the shower off and on that entire night until 7 because sitting down and leaning forward with hot water hittingmy back was the only thing relieving the pain at all. I tried to get into my doctor but they told me to see if I could tough it out until the nextmorning or else go to the ER if it got too bad. The pain dulled enough friday that I decided to tough it out until the next morning as they suggested. 3am that night and I was up again vomitting and with pain so severe I couldn't take it anymore and went to the ER. The pain was going across my entire upper abdomen at this point. The right side hurt with the lightest touch. They ordered bloodwork and I then waited in triage for 4.5 hours. Finally the pain got so bad that my lip was quivering trying to hold tears back, I felt like I had to puke but it hurt too much, and it was painful to take the smallest breath... I couldn't take a full one. Finally a nurse listened to me, after a half hour of begging. My blood results had been in for hours but no one looked at them. The nurses were just sitting at their desks the entire time, even napping. She looked at my results, thinking I was just botching formothing and said "ooo this isn't good..." I was taken right back and put on morphine and antibiotics. I was told it's pancreatitis. They did an ultrasound but no stones were found. My blood pressure has dropped since I've been in (I normally have high blood pressure) to 95/69. My urine has been amber in colour. I feel extremely tired and light-headed. They said my liver is also all out of whack. They said they person to do the test with a camera shoved down your throat is on vacation... So I'm getting an MRI instead whenever they schedule it... I'm just really freaked outbecause they don't know the cause (I also don't drink or do any drugs) and my liver is also fucked up now. I told them thyroid disease runs in my family but they haven't tested for that. Does anyone have any suggestions? Should I be worrying?Sorry for all the weird typos; I had to type this up on my iPod.Thanks. No I do not have a fever although I feel like I do- but it was probably from the pain. I do know that my liver is not working properly and the blood tests also showed my pancreas is inflamed but the cause is unknown as no gallstones were found and I've never had a drink in my life. sorry this is so long. Ok, I am 14 years old my mom is about to turn 41 and my sis is 19. My parents were divorced when i was about 2 or 3, and i stayed with my mom and sis and didnt see him again (my dad) till i was about 5 and then he just dissapeared again and i didnt see or hear from him for 10 years, a couple months ago we went to go find him and he was nice about it and we met up. My dad is wealthy, and he still lacks to pay my mom for my child support at all. he just doesnt seem to care about me, when i met him i just couldnt help but feel angry, he was nice to us but after that i havent heard from him in a while again. So i told her and she tells me "oh please.. Your Not Smart Enough" (to be an equine vet) shes always calling me fat and i only way 110 pounds. Resolved Question: Alcohol induced pancreatitis?

About a week ago I had a pain in my abdomen, it wasn't that bad of a pain, but it was noticeable so I went to the ER. After pushing around on my stomach the doctor said he thought it was a pulled muscle, but would wait until my blood work came back to be sure. Sure enough my blood showed slightly elevated levels of lipase (level was 150) and so I was diagnosed with a mild case of acute pancreatitis. I later got a CT which showed a mild inflammation of the tail of my pancreas. The next day I had an ultrasound and everything including my pancreas looked normal, no inflammation. They do not know the cause but they say it could have been that I drank excessively during a graduation party 4 days prior. My question is it normal for pancreatitis brought on by a weekend of drinking to take 4 days to show symptoms (ie abdominal tenderness)? Again the pain was mild and only felt when I laughed or coughed. Also my doctor said that I can only drink one beer at a time now for the rest of my life...I'm 26 years old. more

Resolved Question: What causes a false positive on tumour marker?

My 35-year-old husband was recently in the hospital with pancreatitis. They did an ultrasound, mri, ct scan and found that his pancreas was inflamed. Most recently, they did some blood tests looking for tumour markers. We got the results yesterday and the doctor said he was perplexed; while, he said, a mark of 70-80 would be high, my husband's was an astonishing 2000. As he isn't fatigued or losing weight, not nauseous, etc... and has only a sore back as a symptom, all the doctor could say was that he'd have to investigate further as it didn't make sense. Of course I am still terrified. Has anyone had experience with a false positive and knows what else could cause such a result? The doctor mentioned perhaps auto-immune pancreatitis but my husband isn't jaundiced either so it didn't really look like that was the case. Thank you in advance. more

Voting Question: Massive gastrointestinal bleeding after surgery, other causes besides surgeon error?

Nearly a month ago, my husband had surgery to remove most of his pancreas & his gallbladder after acute hemorragic pancreatitis. He developed abcesses & had another surgery Saturday to clean everything out, including a bit of dead pancreas. He had his first bowel movement yesterday & it was full of blood, as has been the horrible diarrhea he had all day today. His hemoglobin is being checked every 8 hours & he's had to have 2 or 3 transfusions. A gastroscopy, unsurpringly, showed nothing & he'll have more tests tomorrow. What is the likelihood of such massive bleeding being caused by anything other than the surgeon cutting/nicking a vessel? more

Voting Question: Why? Placed on Cymbalta while suffering from liver damage?

My husband has a lot of health problems: MS, liver problems (extremely high liver test results, fatty liver diagnosis, and uncertainty about how much damage has been done), alcoholism, pancreatitis, and diabetes. He is really a mess...and went to a psychotherapist due to severe depression. The psych had him sign a release for info from his medical doc and then a few weeks later put him on Cymbalta. My husband is actually doing great on this medication but I just found out online that Cymbalta is known to cause liver damage and should not be used by patients with this diagnosis. So...I'm wondering what this means. Did the psych not read my husband's medical records? They clearly show he has liver problems and is a heavy drinker. When I call the psych's office, they won't talk to me about my husband's situation at all. I get why...but i'm very puzzled. My husband is in denial about so many things, including this situation, and doesn't want to screw with possibly losing this new medication which seems to really help him. I don't know what to do. more

Resolved Question: Gallbladder Removal - Who Has Had Theirs Removed?

I have had severe pain caused by gallstones and gallbladder inflammation now for over a year. The pain can come once a month or as frequently as 3 times a week and can last for anything from 20 minutes to several hours. I have put off having my gallbladder removed as I have read stories on the web about people regretting having it removed. But now, my doctor has told me it is getting more serious and I really need to have it taken out, especially as my last attack brought on the early start of pancreatitis. I am 39 years old, 5ft 8 and a normal weight for my height. I eat quite healthily during the week but have been known to indulge in something a bit more tasty (but not so healthy) at weekends. I have cut out all the major things that were triggering my attacks, such as eggs, cheese, fried food etc. and have tried drinking lots of apple juice, lemon juice and olive oil etc. as recommended in "alternative to gallbladder removal" advice pages. Since my last attack, I was too scared to eat as I had only had a jacket potato with baked beans to eat before the attack and during this time I lost 5lbs in weight. I have read about people who have put on huge amounts of weight after having the gallbladder removed, have still had pain, severe diarrhea and other complications. Obviously I know that if I have it removed I will not be able to eat junk food all the time, but I would like to think that I would be able to eat a little bit of what I fancy when I fancy it as any normal person would? My questions is really to people who have had their gallbladder removed or have genuine knowledge of this operation. Did you regret it or are you pleased you had it removed? Are there any other alternatives (apart from the flush)? Im trying to get a more accurate idea of the pros and cons of the operation as there seems to be a lot of stories on the web of people who have regretted having it done due to all the issues that come with it, but not so many stories of people who have never regretted having it done. I only know 2 people who have had it removed, in both cases it was over 20 years ago, but they both report no side effects, no problems, no change in diet, no weight gain, no diarrhea etc. So I would really like to know of anyone who has had this operation more recently and their personal opinions. Last week, my dad who is 65 had to be rushed to the hospital for pancreatitis. He only has Medicare Part A and is considered low income. During his stay he had the following treatments: 5 hours Emergency Room - Utrasound, CT Scan, pain meds 2 nights private heart monitoring room - around the clock care, pain meds, blood pressure check, IV fluids, antibiotics, insulin shots, no meals 2 nights semi private room - MRI, around the clock care, paint meds, blood pressure check, IV fluids, antibiotics, insulin shots, meals. We haven't received the bills yet but we were discharged after 6 days. Due to the swelling, we still need to go in to do an MRI to make sure what is causing the pancreatitis in a few weeks. My question is, out of this, what is covered in the medicare part A? After a lot of research, it doesn't look like Medicare part A will cover very much. We thought "hospital benefits" actually included, any kind of emergency treatment like what my dad got. We also didn't know what doctors will send you a seperate bill from their office. Can anyone add to this mess on what we can do? Should we be expecting a $300,000 + bill in all? Out of this what will be covered by medicare part A? **We are in the process of applying for Medical and have recenty had to do a "spend down" to bring our personal property limit to $3000.00 to be elibible. Okay, my name is Emily and I have recently been diagnosed with Gallstones, I've had many attacks, over about 11 months now, I think. Lately, I've become randomly nauseated and light-headed/dizzy. It comes and goes from day to day. I have been looking up the side effects of having gallstones without surgery, it has made me a bit of a hypochondriac. But nothing has bothered me more than this: Yesterday, I found a small swollen mass, on my left side, on my back, more than my front side, near my pancreas. I have heard that pancreatitis, is something that can be caused by gallstones. It goes at a very strange angle, it doesn't really hurt, unless I hunch over for too long, then it sort of aches, but it's definitely there. It's right in the curve of my left side, at the very bottom of my rib cage, it's gotten me quite scared, especially because pancreatitis causes nausea and dizzy spells. When I was 11 years old I was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with acute pancreatitis. I had never had any alcohol in my life so that one is off the list. I had to have a nasogastric tube in me for 3 and a half days while on a IV and i wasn't allowed to be put back onto liquids for another two weeks. when i kept the water down they moved me onto food and eventually they let me out. in outpatients, i saw every specialist that i could and i had ever scan and test available including that for gallstones and billias slat, and its neither of them. I had numerous MRCP scans and ultrasounds, both showed nothing, my family and i also had a test done to see if this was hereditoy in my family or if i could give it to my children should i ever have any. the results said no. In the end they put me down to an UNKNOWN CAUSE. 4 years later (just a few weeks ago) I got acute pancreatitis again and then had a relapse after that, i had to go through the whole traumatic experience again with tubes, scans and an IV and i am now back at home recovering. in a few weeks i will have another MRCP scan. HOWEVER I NEED YOUR HELP i know that these scans will just come up with nothing again, but i am very anxious to find out what causes this, anything at all apart from the mentioned above. If there are any nurses or doctors out there who could shed some possible light on this matter i would be very grateful. Right now i have been put on 15mg of lansoprazole to have everymorning before food. and i am on a BLAND diet. if that helps. also anyone who has been or is in a similar situation then please feel free to email me =]Also thanks to anyone who replys with sensible replys. okay, so, i'm not an expert or anything in cat health. ALL of my cats have ALWAYS been healthy, therefore leaving me no reason to actually worry. until now. i have a neutered male cat that's about 9 years old, who started, out of nowhere, to sleep a lot more than usual, lost a little weight, stopped eating so much, and didn't want anything to do with water, which he's always loved. after about a week of very little eating/drinking, and the same lack of energy, we took him in, the vet spent 5 minutes with him, took a blood/urine test, and the next day called and said he thinks oreo has pancreatitis. so, i went in, got clavamox (i'm pretty sure that's what it's called) and some of the science diet a/d stuff, which he was mildly interested in in the office. came home, thought everything was fine. a couple days later he started breathing really funny, and coughing a lot. my mom called the next morning and we took oreo back in, getting an x ray this time, which showed a BUNCH of fluid in his lungs. right. he didn't say anything about the pancreatitis, or how he should be doing, but we got medicine (i don't know what this is called) that's supposed to help with the pneumonia and causes him to drink/pee more. yippee. it's been about five days since then, and i'm taking him back in on monday, but there's been VERY little improvement. i've done research, and some people say that i'm supposed to force-feed him and others that say it's bad. i don't know what to do :/ so, i guess my overall question is, while he's drinking now, and peeing fine, what should i do about the food? the vet i go to i don't trust at all, and he's not helpful in the least. should i continue to force-feed him (i do about 1/4 a can at 7 am, spread that through the day, and 1/4 a can at 7 pm, spread through the night, along with both medicines at the same time), or should i commit him to the vet's for IV fluids and food fed right into the intestines or something similar? i don't want to hurt him - and i want him to recover; it hurts to see him so thin and not being able to really help him... i don't want to put him down, either. i mean, if it's necessary because he's just going to die anyways from this, then... yeah... to ease his suffering, but... please don't suggest that. it isn't what i want to hear when there's a little hope for him left. any answers are appreciated. thanks guys. I was hospitalized about 3 years ago with an episode of acute pancreatitis. About 6 days ago, I finally drank again and had 1 beer over the course of about 2 hours. Since then, I've had a persistent very dull pain in the general area under my ribcage, right above my belly button. After the pain subsides, the area feels bruised to the touch. I also have a lot of gas and acid reflux. My stool is normal, eating habits are normal. I'm just really hoping this isn't pancreatitis again. I was only 16 when I had my first attack, and I wasn't even a heavy drinker back then either (although it was caused by having 3 beers in one night). So what do you guys think? My husband has a lot of health problems and most of it is because he is an alcoholic and has been continuing to drink heavily. He has fatty liver and pancreatitis. Last week, his doc did a fasting blood test and we got the results yesterday: The main concerns were: High triglycerides: 1100s High blood sugar: 500s High liver function numbers (don't have those figures..but those have been high for months) High blood pressure: 160/90 So...the doc is waiting for two weeks and then wants to recheck his blood. One reason is because my husband didn't really fast. Apparently, he had a drink of some kind in the middle of the night when he was supposed to be fasting. I suppose my question is can a mixed drink (like with orange juice or a beer) cause any of these numbers to spike during a fast? I'm especially wondering about the blood sugar number? Or is it so high that it wouldn't have mattered if he fasted or not? I won't get into the fact that my husband MUST stop drinking. ive been on lexapro(antidepressant)for a few months now and want to get off it so ive start reducing the dose cos its the only way cos it makes me feel crap if i try to stop and ive also gone through a lot of sickness the last few years .. gastritis h pylori pancreatitis depression constipation (a lot of the time)and now ive diabetis on insulin injections .. i used to drink a lot but dont drink that much any more but when i do drink ive had problems with would be associated with the medication but also if i went for a good few drinks i could be in pain for days that start in the stomach and end up in the bowel area and ive no choice but to take pain killers .. i take solpadeine and tramadol and df118 i dont take them all at once just change sometimes cos of side affects and the pain has now died after 3 days and it is so bad that i need strong pain killers so ive really more or less stopped drinking it has taken a while to cut down years of pain and depression have finally took their toll so im ready for a new start so im trying to get all tablets out of my system but i just feel like im getting mood swings feeling tired and groggy and headaches i know the tablets have caused me to feel this way so what do i do if i take tablets to kill the pains that i still have im just back to square one so i want to just get all medication out of my body except insulin of course so where do i start ive stopped on all pain killers even paracetamol if i get a headache and ive reduced my lexapro i just feel for too long if i have a headache ill go for a pain killer too often i just depend on tablets too much of the time that my body must be immune to some of them i also need to start getting my body healthy and more energised so do i need to detox to get rid of all the toxins and i also think h pylori has a big part to play cos i just cant seem to get rid of it with the anti biotics and i would really appreciate some help here but no spam answers eg.try actai berry or some crap or drink your own urine .. any how thanks in advance more

My one dog a small 8lb dog needs a food low in fat and protein or he gets very sick she he is on California Naturals Herring and Sweet potato. (He has had pancreatitis and other gastrointestinal issues CN has been the best food ever for him with those issues and his food allergies, he also can't tolerate corn) My other dog is a larger (still a small dog) more sporty dog, a Terrier mix who is extremely athletic, she needs a more balanced diet. We thought about putting her on Innova and leaving him on California Naturals but that just doesn't seem to be option right now. But now, I have stomach pain every day. And pain medications make me sick to my stomach. I take them after eating a meal, and I drink plenty of water. But it always seems to make me feel very nauseous, and sick. I end up throwing up. And then I feel so fatigued for the rest of the day, sometimes even the next day or two. My doctor thinks it's just acid in my stomach. So she prescribed me rantidine. I've been taking it for a month. It helps with heartburn, but my stomach still hurts. Resolved Question: How is acute pancreatitis treated?

I've been asking a lot about this condition lately, and I'm sorry if it is starting to get old, but at 9pm at night, you don't have a lot of other sources to go to! How should acute pancreatitis be treated? The reason I ask is because I have been recently diagnosed with it, however not treated, and my GP thinks I have been clinically neglected on the hospitals part, and even gave me a statement I could use if I wish to follow up a complaint for Clinical Negligence. GP says given my medical tests, results and symtoms, that I should have been in hospital, on an intraveinous drip given fluids (Due to the dehydration caused by not being able to keep anything down- or in), and surgical intervention or at least consultation should have taken place. Instead I was sent home with no medication, doctor at the hospital di not beleive it was pancreas related as (In his exact words) "It can not be the pancreas, as you do not drink alcohol or do drugs". He said he consulted with the surgeon on call, but when asked what the sugeon said he would not say anything. He did not give us the surgeons name, and when we requested to see him, he said he was too busy. Anyway, all of that aside, GP (Who has worked many E.Rs) says treatment should have been initiated based on my results, but obviously it wasn't. I'm still having the same symptoms, so obviously it's not just a bug that's taking it's sweet time to pass. How should pancreatitis be treated normally? Thanks, and please no rude comments. more

Fourth, the receptor protein is unable to stay in the membrane. Fifth, receptor protein is present in the membrane and links with the LDL packages, but does not bring them into the cell. None of these are beneficial. A second example is a common genetic disease, cystic fibrosis (CF). This multisystem disease cripples children and leads to early death. It damages the lungs, digestive organs and, in the male, the vas deferens (spermatic duct). Its differing effects, from mild to severe, are in part due to different types of mutation affecting one key gene. In addition to this fairly common mutation, over 200 other mutations of this gene have been described. Just a few of these are associated with the more severe forms of the disease, which lead to early death from lung infections. Other mutations or combinations of mutations lead to lesser disease states, like chronic pancreatitis or male infertility, but again, no beneficial results have been observed. Resolved Question: Slightly elevated pancreatic enzymes?

I got blood tests about a week ago and the tests came back with my lipase and amylase 3 points above the normal cutoff. I've been having some stomach pains that wake me up at night sometimes but it doesn't seem to be anything overly serious. The doctor said pancreatitis but after all the hoops he's made me go through I'm not so sure I believe him anymore. Shouldn't I be in the hospital if it's pancreatitis? Could it be stress causing this? It seems like I feel much less pain when I meditate before bed. I am not going to lie. I'm worried about pancreatic cancer, but I am only 22 years old and it seems unlikely. The doctor said pancreatitis is the only reason my enzymes are slightly raised like this. I was hoping to get someone's opinion on this, as I have been through the ringer. He hasn't done any real diagnostic testing on me at all. Just the blood test. First he said it was gastritis, then he said it was an ulcer, but I tested negative for H.Pylori and I'm pissed because I'm tired of seeing my stupid doctor. I've been there six times in the last two months. By the way the normal cutoff of "high" for these enzymes is 160, and I was at 163.LOL Diabetes. That is ridiculous. My grandmother had diabetes. That is NOT what this is. I was wondering about gallstones. I just don't get how it could be pancreatitis. I wasn't sent to the hospital and my pain was never so bad I felt like I needed to go to the hospital. I never developed a fever, and my pulse never soared above normal. I am soooo confuuuuused....That and it's been going on for several weeks. The pain seems to have gone away for the time being, but I would wake up at night with either pain that felt like I'd been punched in the gut (Not too horrible, however) or with reflux. Both prevented me from sleeping, but I just...I don't get it. If it comes back, I will be going back to the doctor. I know it isn't from alcohol because I've only ever drank lightly (1-3 beers a week). I also HAD a beer in the midst of all this mess and it neither added to nor caused any problems. Resolved Question: I recenty was in the hospital for acute pancreatitis, can i ever recover completely?

I got a ct scan 2 weeks later and the results said that the inflammation of the pancreast went down and my liver, kidneys,and other orgains looked normal. My lungs and lymph nods are normail to. They said that drinking will cause another attack but im not even 21 yet. Will i ever be able to have a drink on my 21st birthday. Its in 5 months more

Onions (Both onions and garlic contain the toxic ingredient Thiosulphate. But onions are more of a danger. Many dog biscuits contain *small* amounts of garlic – garlic contains less of this toxin so huge amounts would need to be consumed to be toxic. And, by the way, this poison builds up the system – it can be toxic in one large dose – or with repeated consumption of small amounts.) 2. Chocolate (Chocolate contains Theobromine, a compound that is a cardiac stimulant and a diuretic. This can be fatal to dogs.) 3. Grapes (Grapes are dangerous because of an unknown substance which is toxic to dogs – affects canine’s kidneys) 4. Raisins (See above.) 5. Resolved Question: Blood Pressure meds that do not cause Pancreatitis?

I have had 2 instances of pancreatitis in my life, both caused by medication (I do not drink). My doctor had taken me off any medication with this possible side effect in 2003; one of the meds I was cleared for was a Blood Pressure med, Diltiazem (Cardiezem). I had been taking that up until a month ago, when apparently my body suddenly got used to it. More of the same pill did not work, so my doctor has decided to give me an ACE inhibitor + water pill (Lotensin) to try, even though pancreatitis is listed as a possibility. After a week and a half, I am starting to get "the pancreas pain" and although it might be gas, or something else (just started) I have begun to look for a different bp med that does not have pancreatitis as a possible side effect (even at the very bottom of the list, for I have had pancreatitis twice and do not wish to chance it). Does anyone know of a bp med that does not have that as a possibility at all? A point to mention: I also have UC that is in remission, and do not wish to take anything with that as a side effect (or diarrhea) either. more
