moreResolved Question: Osteoarthritis pain relief?
I have been in chronic pain for years with osteoarthritis and need 2 knee replacement operations. Meantime can anyone recommend an effective pain relief? I've tried all the usual herbal remedies, tens machines, acupuncture, hypnosis, non prescription painkillers. I am currently taking Arcoxia and Tramadol. Tramadol really helps but the side effects drive me crazy - dry mouth and throat, a croaky voice, but it is the itching that's the worst, like something crawling all over my skin. I can't take codeine based medication and other painkillers prescribed to me have upset my stomach. Anyone out there know of a really effective painkiller without too many side effects that I could ask my doctor about?

moreResolved Question: Been diagnosed with osteoarthritis?
Hi
I have been told i have moderate to severe osteoarthritis in one of my knee's and am waiting on an appointment to see an op surgeon. In the mean time my GP has given me Arthrotec75 tablets and some cephalon cream.
My worry is i have read a lot of reviews online about these tablets and to be honest they scared the hell out of me.
Should i only take them when in pain as i do get some good days and some bad. Or should i really be taking them all the time I'm 37 and i can't imagine the doc doing anything for me with being young-ish lol so the thoughts of maybe being on these tablets for years and years does not appeal to me at all.
Has anyone else been on these tablets ??? What you think??
Any help would be greatThanks everyone for your help, yes i did have an infection in my growth plate and have had 6 operations from 6wks old until i was 16 they did tell me that i more than likely have some problems when i got older, so i guess this it it :-(
Fingers crossed it won't be to long until my appointment with the ostio doc.
I will keep trying the tablets on your advice thanks a million, and i hope the pain isn't to bad for you all ;-)
Cheers x

My mother has been diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knee, and possibly hip. I have heard that walking backwards can help train someone's balance, as well as train your quadriceps (which could possibly help improve her situation).
Can someone please explain the how walking backwards help balance/quadriceps?
And even better, can anyone share an experience you had with walking backwards that helped seems to help lessen pain in the knee/hip? Or is there any other treatment you recommend for my mother's situation?
Thanks you very much in advance
moreResolved Question: Help with osteoarthritis of the knee?
Hi, I am 19 years old and i was diagnosed with osteoarthritis at the age of 16, I had to give up GCSE dance and i found any other sport really painful.
The pain in my knee has started to get extremely painful now for example:
I can't crawl around or play on the floor with my 2 year old son (playing with his cars ect.)
If we go to the park i have to make sure i go when my partner can be with us as i can't run after our son if he is in danger ect..
Some-day's we don't go out at all because i wouldn't be able to make it back up the 2 flights of stairs to get back indoors ( with a buggy, child and shopping) It's hard enough to combat the stairs on a good day!
I am on diclofenac and they are doing absolutely nothing for the pain.
I can't sleep, i lay awake for 5 hours+ at night trying to get to sleep and then wake up in the morning feeling like i have had no sleep what-so-ever.
On the day's i can't get out of the house my son is also unable to get out of the house as we have no outdoor space what-so-ever.
I was just wondering what people's advice is on claiming DLA as i could really do with the help of having a car as i feel extremely isolated all the time.
Please any advice would be extremely appreciated, Also my doctor has transferred me to a specialist but there is a 3 month waiting list!!
Thank you.

Knee trouble .please help?
I was born with C.D.H prity much meaning I was born with no hip joint. I had several operations.to many to name and am not waiting a hip replacement as there is no other opton unfortunatly.
But thats not the problem. three years ago i was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis
which started off with a very bad infection and a 32 inch (not sure the units) plug of bone fell out and had to be replaced. It all went well but then sick months later my leg swole up and had to get key hole surgery. Was all good but every sice every 5-6 months my knee swells up and I have to be re-admited to hospital for more key hole surgery.
Again this happened to me 3 weeks ago and I am once again recovering. But this time the pain has got worse in my knee. I can no longer move it and the thigh muscles are now extremly tender and sore. Even the physio is worried.
Ano its only 3 weeks but I no the difference between the other operations and this operations. Should I be worried.
I can no longer eat or sleep. My foot is swolen and it is sore to move my foot.
where I got the infection and why the bone feel out is still unknown as I am a healthy 17 year old girl. I dont play sports becasue of my hip and I am also the correct weight.
Also I started having Trouble with my lungs and kidneys. could this all be related?
What should I do.
I can no longer take the pain.
Should I suggest a knee replacement.?

Arthritis in the fingers, hips, knees and feet
I have rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, teh RA is serum negative.
What I would like help on is this....
I appreciate the joints feeling sore but why do my hands fail to grip?
Why pains down the thigh from hip to knee as well as the hip and knee?
Why is the muscle at the back of the toes getting harder and less elastic and now the toes are sitting on it?
Any help welcome.
I do not see a rheumatologist and was told by one in 1996 that he did not want to see me as I could not take any of his tablets. [I am allergic to salicylates, lactose etc] the only pain killer I can have is 250mgs of paracetamol about every 6 to 8 hours and it is not enough.
I do take many supplements. [am an ND]
Any help welcome, exercise, pain killers, reassurance desperately needed.
By the way it was diagnosed in 1982, proved in 1994 and 1996.
Seeing the GP Wednesday as I feel my thyoxine at 100mcgs is low.
I also have the beginnings of osteoporosis and am coeliac and have many other allergies.
Absolutely allergic to wheat, dairy, alcohol, nuts, herbs, spices, and on a low fat diet. Do take enzyme tablets to be able to have a reasonable diet these are on prescription.
Cod liver and vinegar are out with me. Sorry. That is why I qualified in ND and PhD in immunology but it is the pains that I need reasurrance on...anyone get them like me?

moreResolved Question: Osteoarthritis - Exercises for hands and feet?
I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis a year ago. I was referred to a Physiotherapist who gave me exercises for my back and knees which work really well. However, I now have constant pain in my hands (particularly the base of my thumbs) and feet (mainly the backs of my heels and the balls of my feet). I already take Diclofenac daily and Cocodamol on most days.
Does anyone know any excercises which would help? What is a Nerf ball and where would I get one?
moreResolved Question: Arthritis- or something else?
Hello
I am 27 and a few months ago was told following an x-ray that I had sighs of osteoarthritis on my foot. It was very painful for months but has gradually improved (although I am scared to do too much with it). Now though, I have been having swollen finger joints (base of my thumb and knuckles) and went back to my GP. All tests for rheumatoid , CRP etc were normal. My fingers are worse and my knee can be painful when climbing stairs some days. Could this be reactive arthrits? Is it too much of a coincidence these have happened together? I am beginning to think it's all in my head, but for years I have complained of tiredness and all blood tests have been normal.
Any advice please?PS. I am currently taking glucosamine sulphate- that ma yhave helped my foot, but now all the other problems have started! Also, when I asked my GP to be referred to a specialist, she said that as I don't appear to have RA, the only other specialist she could refer me to is an othorpaedic surgeon!!! I just want advce on how to manage whatever is it that's wrong, and stop it gettig worse!

moreResolved Question: What would you class as a disability? Please read below...?
As an example.... I have osteoarthritis in my knee caused by a RTA. On good days I can walk for a while without too much pain, but on a bad day every step can hurt like hell. I am unable to run at all and my knee does give way from time to time. My sleep is often disturbed through pain, and my knee also seizes up.
Now I work, I dont claim for any money due to having a bad knee, as I support myself and my 3 kids, but in truth I would be very happy to be classed as disabled so I could get a badge so things like shopping are made easier, and I could park closer, when my knee is hurting like hell.
So with not wanting to get any free money and just a card that would make my life a little easier.. am I a bad person? Would you class me as being disabled in some way?

I'm 26 and have just been told I have osteoarthritis in my big toe joint- it is painful and have been walking funny for months. My GP did not seem concerned. After perserverin for years of saying I get achy bones, she sent me for rheumatoid arthritis blood tests which have come back normal. I want to see a speciailst about my foot as it is affecting my quality of life. What other tests do I need to ask for - I am convinced there is something wrong which may or may not be connected to my foot. Somtimes my hips/ knees/ back/ shoulders ache badly (after doing nothing) and I need to take painkillers. Please help point me in the right direction.
moreResolved Question: Ideally, I'm looking for a response from a Physiotherapist.?
I have what appears to be developing Osteoarthritis in my right knee joint: gradual onset over the past 12 months and some crepitus can be felt. I know about flushing of, and steroid injections into the capsule but I don't regard it as being at that stage yet because it only troubles me at certain times, i.e. after long walks. Are there any recommendations for managing it at this stage? I tried one of those sports compression sleeves thinking the heat insulation would help but it appears to aggrevate it. I'm also working on losing a little weight as I know that can be beneficial in slowing further deterioration.

I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis 4 years ago,I have had a knee replacement already. The thing is, I was always told it was reumatoid arthritis that deformed the joints, especially the hands, not osteoarthritis, but one of my thumbs is deformed and the other is trigger fingered. I have released it and do massage it a lot so that it won't lock again.
I have been told about Devils Claw, it's in the Health shops and is supposed to stop, and even repair deformaty especially in the hands. Has anyone else tried this ,and what success have you had with it?
Genuine replies only please, because suffering from this is no joke believe me.Thanks.

Most of my life(with the exception of before pubity)I have ranged between 8.1/2 and 9.1/2 stone.Until I got breast cancer at 52 & had to come off HRT & stop smoking.Hence I put on 3 stone.I then was diagnosed with osteoarthritis as well,& needed a knee replacement.Thank god I was given the all clear last September for the breast cancer & I am walking well on the new knee. But I have had to retire.Apart from the fact that I am 60, I'm not really fit enough with the arthritis to work as a Florist. The trouble is I hate being fat,it really pulls me down physically & emotionally.I have lots of other problems, financial, family,& healthwise,& I just can't seem to get stuck into a good eating plan, although I know from experience that it would make me feel so much better, being fit.I just can't get my willpower back.I'm normally so strong, when I make up my mind,I do it.I'm now nearly l3 stone, hate looking in the mirror, only food & alcohol seem to cheer me,I sleep a lot, to block it all out.Help!!I know your going to say, until you sort out your other problems, you won't be able to stick to an eating plan, but my other problems aren't solvable, there long term.I've got DVD's on everything to try & make you feel better, diet books galore and even hypnosis tapes, I've joined weight watchers, slimming magazine, but nothing seems to work.Anyone out there got a solution to get rid of this awful fat. My sex life's completely gone out the window, and I don't want to socialize anymore even when I can afford to go.I just hate the way I look, it's making my life hell and me hell to live with.

About 6 or 7 months ago I hurt my knee playing basket ball and ever since it has made a crunching sound when I bend it. It does not hurt unless I keep it bent for more than 10 min and sometimes it hurts whilst walking. After going to my doctor and going to hospital it still made the sond and I still have no idea why. I have done alot of research on the internet and found out that it might be "Crepitus" or "osteoarthritis". Has any one else had the same problem? and should I be worried that I may have osteoarthritis when im only 16 ?

Specifically for problems with knees and ankles. Jogging and cycling are not options right now but is there something to build up the muscles around the joint so that they may be again?Thank you for all your answers so far.
Just to clarify:
I realise that it is due to worn away cartelidge however until it is completely worn away it appears that with weight loss and certain forms of excercise you can significantly delay the need for surgery. I am interested in which forms of excercise work best.
