Migraine Syndrome Questions and Answers

Open Question: I need help diagnosing a lifelong friend - hypochondriac?!?

I know someone who always thinks there is something wrong with her body, like arthritis, migraines, general illness etc, even when you say you are ill she has to feel the 'same too'. She always thinks things are wrong with other people too (illness and personality traits - over analysis etc); she believed her friend was a schizophrenic, then he was had aspersion syndrome (and I know the guy very well, he is perfectly normal). It doesn't sound like she is a hypochondriac, so I am a bit lost. She is about 50 years of age. I have known her all my life. This person is very close to me and I really need to help, as she is loosing everyone around her due to them getting fed up of her attitude and manner. Not diagnose as such, but a point in the right direction? more

Resolved Question: does this sound like MS?

I need some help, I feel so unwell and its taking over my life. I am always feeling like I'm coming down with something and have had a burning headache for a few months. I was diagnosed with CFS about 6 years ago. But after a while I felt a lot better and went 4 years feeling fine apart from the fact that I am always stiff. Along with the uncontrollable drowsiness when the CFS is playing up I get sleep paralysys, dizzyness, headaches, I cant speak properly, I get forgetfull and my hands shake. I'm so clumsy, things just fall through my fingers. I drop everything on the floor. My whole body aches and I am so stiff. I feel sick in the mornings and it takes me hours to wake up. My mind is foggy and I get so forgetfull. But lately I have been going through a particually bad patch. I have had a burning headache for almost 3 months, I feel dizzy a lot and sick and my head feels like its burning. The clumsyness is back and I feel like an old lady because I am so stiff, achey and uncomfortable. I have never been so forgetfull and I feel like I am living in a bubble. Like I am still sleeping even when I'm awake. I have had sleep tests in the past and even an MRI. I never thougt about MS before until I looked on a website because of a friend having a problem with her eye and it popped up on google so I had a read. Instead of finding an answer for her questions I found answers for mine. It seems to make so much sense. Here is a list of things I experience or have experienced in past episodes of feeling this way. It comes and goes. I went 4 years feeling fine and now its back. Extreme fatigue severe burning headaches or migraines dizziness nausea problems with spacial awareness joint pain and stiffness pins and needles in arms and legs. my hands sometimes feel funny, sometimes numb palpitations cramps in my legs and ankles (but only when I'm cold) tight chest (only when I'm cold) clumsiness, things just fall through my hands and I trip over myself alot forgetfull memory loss have trouble forming sentences and finding words tinitus, worse than usual (not sure if its a symptom of ms?) altered sense of smell, although taste is normal restless leg syndrome, which annoys hubby but doesnt bother me mood swings (probably because of my 3 month headache) I have perfect vision because of laser eye treatment so no visual symptoms except i see a little black dot in my vision which they said was a floater. I feel so fed up of feeling this way. I'm sure the doctor thinks I'm a hypechondriac or something. Is this all just CFS or could it be MS? The reason that I have started thinking it could be this is because I read about it causing lesions on the brain. I had an MRI when they diagnosed CFS and there was 1 lesion there but according to what I've read they would need to see 2 or more for a diagnosis. They didnt seem concerned by the lesion at the time. Please give me your opinions. should I go to the doctor and demand some tests? Oh and the scariest thing I have had since I started feeling ill again is that a few weeks ago I went to change gear and my arm didnt move. That usualy only happens if the 1st few seconds after I wake. When it did move it was so heavy.forgot to add, had blood tests for diabetes, heliobactor pylori (because of the nausea) and usualy FBCs and stuff. All normal. Would this mean I can forget about the MS and stop being silly?sorry, also should have said have already gone down the vitamine b route, no problems there but I took suplements anyway and my pee turned bright yellow. the packaging said thats a sign of having too much so i stopped taking them more

Resolved Question: Is my staff member a sociopath?

I have a member of staff who over the last 9 years has had a variety of illnesses; poly-cystic ovaries, asthma, migraines, symphisis pubis disorder and now chronic fatigue syndrome. In all cases she has tried to blame our employer for causing or aggravating her condition. She has tried to sue the employer twice unsuccessfully. She now comes to work in a wheelchair (due to the CFS) which has not been medically provided and which she does not use at home. She has been seen walking/dancing outside work. She tells lies constantly, seemingly trying to divide other staff, saying things like "she's trying to stitch you up". She tries to get pity constantly and absolutely craves attention. She is never satisfied with any help/support given and always looks for the negative in any resolution offered to her. She never thanks anyone for anything, even when people have gone out of their way to help her. She has twice made very malicious allegations about other staff, stating that one bullied her (definitely did not) and that another shut a door on her (couldn't possibly have happened the way she described it). The fact that she could do this to two totally innocent people leads me to believe she has no conscience. She seems to be of the opinion that the 'world owes her something' and that people should check how she is constantly. When she stated that some people wouldn't help her by pushing her wheelchair (which they have no obligation to do) she was told that other people may have hidden illnesses, which might prevent them from pushing a heavy wheelchair, she stated that she KNEW these people had nothing wrong with them and they were just being unkind to her. She seems to have no concept of other people's lives or feelings. She has manipulated the fact that she is 'disabled' and seems to love the power it gives her over the company. She also plays to some people's emotions, crying regularly in front of one manager, who she knew would feel empathy for this behaviour. yet never crying with other managers who would be unmoved by this. She also tries to shock by burping, farting and telling overtly sexual stories in, what is, a conservative office environment. I used to worry a lot about the situation but her demands/lies have become so farcical that I just let it wash over me, and stay calm, however this seems to enrage her She seems to me to be a sociopath, am I taking the right approach by acting disinterested? more

Resolved Question: CLumsy Child Syndrome? What else could it be?

I've just turned 15, and I've been one of the most clumsiest children/teenager ever! It's awful, some of the things I do! Anyway, it's getting really bad now, everything I touch breaks and I drop things and smash things. It's quite hard everyday actually because I always do something, I'm starting to think it could be Dyspraxia (Clumsy Child Syndrome) DCD - or something. :S I was diagnosed with Dyslexia in 2006 in year 7 of my secondary school. In year 8 I moved to a different school. (No reasons of that by the way, reason is not important) Anyway, a few months back...(I'm now in year 10) I had another dyslexia test at my school now, they said that I'm not dyslexic. I was wondering if it's dyspraxia, here are the dyspraxia symptoms, and then after I will put the numbers of what symptoms I have. Difficulties in adapting to a structured school routine. 1. Difficulties in PE lessons. 2. Slow at dressing. Unable to tie shoe laces. 3. Immature drawing and copying skills. 4. Limited concentration and poor listening skills. 5. Literal use of language. 6. Inability to remember more than two or three instructions at once. 7. Slow completion of class work. 8. Continued high levels of motor activity. 9. Hand flapping or clapping when excited. 10. Tendency to become easily distressed and emotional. 11. Problems with co-ordinating a knife and fork. 12. Inability to form relationships with other children. 13. Sleeping difficulties. 14. Reporting of physical symptoms, such as migraine, headaches, feeling sick. 15. Barely legiable handwriting 16. Bad self-esteem symptoms I have... 1, 2 (I'm alright with shoe laces, just very slow at getting dressed), 3 (Only with copying writing, not drawing), 4 - that's a big one...along with 6. 7, 9. 10&11 - big ones. 13, 14, 15, 16 Could it be this? If so what do I do? If not, what could it be? Advice please Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: TOPAMAX(Topiramate) - Long term studies on cognitive abilities ?

I am on the above drug for complex migraine variants , it has been very succesful except for Hemiplegic and Alice and Wonderland Syndrome, however I have been noticing changes to my memory, speech and cognitive abilities .I have always considered myself to be extremely sharp, quick and able eg. I worked with actuaries, was a Project manager, never had to look up tel nos, knew exactly how much my basket of groceries was at the supermarket to the penny, could do the countdown maths quiz at least 4 out of 5 times and my vocabulary was extensive. Now I feel stupid and can hardly string a sentence together let alone add up or do simple maths.. My queries a) If I stop taking Topamax will my cognitive abilities return and b) Does anyone know of any published medical papers of the effect of Topamax on cognitive abilities long term ? I feel as if I have some form of demetia Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Last option is Mirena coil - What should I do?

This is a long one sorry. I'm 22 - have had heavy, painful periods for as long as I remember. Severe pmt, anemia and general bit*ch syndrome every time my period comes. Every month it is just getting worse - my family & my boyfriend suffer because of my moods. I also cannot leave the house for the first 2 days as it is just too heavy. When the period is over I am back to my calm, happy self and wonder what the heck had just happened?! Anyway I suffer from occasional migraines and I cannot take combined oral contraceptives (anything containing estrogen) as there is a risk of stroke. So I have tried many progesterone pills - NONE work and the last one I had a migraine for 3 days and the whole left side of my body was numb. Doc is still not referring me to gynae and thinks I should try the Mirena coil now before gynae?!! I have never had any kids so I am quite apprehensive and read so many horror stories. Any advice would be appreciated?!yup tried mef & tran acid and both didnt help more

Resolved Question: Could I have Polycystic ovary syndrome?

I am concerned I may have Polycystic ovary syndrome. I am going to see my Doctor in about a week but would like some feedback on my symptoms Irregular periods: they vary between every 2 - 4 weeks and are very heavy. The tend to last 5 -7 days. I am 30 and have adult acne and very greasy skin. I am overweight and have gained around 50lbs in the past two years. I suffer from severe migraine headaches I have a recurrent cervical erosion I suffer from depression I also suffer from IBS with at least one possible episode of colitis. I do not seem to suffer from the hirsutism that seems to bother many women with pcos however I do feel that the hair on my head is prone to fall out a lot at times but I have always attributed that to anemia. I have never tried to get pregnant so I don't know about infertility. Do you think I could have PCOS? more

Resolved Question: What does Chinese/alternitive therapies help? And do they work?

I have a list as long as my arm of medical problems, and I was wondering if Chinese or alternative medicines would help. Some of the problems involved; Irritable bowel syndrome, joint/bone pains, migraines, disordered eating, tiredness, mood swings... Just wondering if it was worth considering alternative/chinese therapies that may contribute to the healing of some of my aliments... :-) Has anyone ever tried any treatments, and if so, what were the results and would you reccommend trying them out? Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Anybody have any natural remedies for chronic headaches?

I get headaches every single day and migraines about once a fortnight - I read on the net that it's called chronic headache syndrome and about 3% of people have it - but it also said that using painkillers like ibuprofen can make it worse as the body ends up depending on them. So can anyone suggest any natural remedies for these neverending headaches? It makes my life a misery!! more

Resolved Question: PCOD & IBS - any tips???

Hi all, I have polycystic ovary syndrome and irritable bowel syndrome- I also get really bad headaches which linger for ages - they feel like pressure headaches although I have and do suffer from migraine too.
