What Is Durable Medical Equipment Answers

Resolved Question: help looking for an insurance policy?

are there health insurance policies that just cover major medical? What I'm looking for is coverage if something catastrophic happens, like I break a leg, or need surgery or I get cancer or I need some type of hospitalization. Do they offer this type of insurance, because I'm having a hard time finding a policy. I don't need doctor's visits, maternity, lab work, prescription or durable medical equipment covered. Just catastrophic coverage. more

Resolved Question: Given the following, is it not inevitable that Obamacare's cost will be measured in lost lives of the elderly?

In 2011: cuts begin for Medicare Advantage; the elderly are no longer allowed to use Health Care Account (FSA, HSA, HRA, Archer MSA) distributions for over-the-counter medicine; Medicare cuts to home health begin; wealthier seniors begin paying higher Part D premiums (not indexed for inflation in Parts B/D); new Medicare cuts to long-term care hospitals begin in July; Medicare reimbursement will be cut when seniors use diagnostic imaging like MRIs, CT scans, etc., and cuts begin for ambulance services, ASCs, diagnostic labs, and durable medical equipment. And, additional Medicare cuts to hospitals and to nursing homes and inpatient rehab facilities begin after October, along with cuts for dialysis treatment; Medicare will reduce spending by using an HMO-like coordinated care model; new Medicare cuts to inpatient psych hospitals begin in July; Medicare cuts to hospice begin in fiscal 2013, accompanied by cuts to hospitals that treat low-income seniors. In 2014 more Medicare cuts to home health begin. Or do you believe that the elderly will still recieve the life extending services even after Obama quits paying for them? http://bdtonline.com/columns/x769246155/The-health-care-reform-bill-has-passed-now-we-know-what-s-in-it more

Resolved Question: What will happen to the Aadvantage Medicare Program now that the Health Bill passed?

I heard that the bill cuts $523billion from Medicare. I'm partially disabled &I rely on my Aadvantage HMO, will I now have to use 'traditional Medicare (fee for service)'? Here's the info I found & what it cuts for Seniors & the Disabled: Cuts to Senior Health Care in Illinois under Medicare The legislation stands for the principle that we should cut senior health care under Medicare to fund a new entitlement spending program. Over 40 million seniors depend on Medicare for their health care. Under the Senate bill, the federal government would cut over $500 billion from Medicare. This includes cutting over $200 billion from Medicare Advantage, cancelling the Medicare choice of over 120,000 Illinois seniors. Here is a summary of the top Medicare cuts: Medicare Advantage -$202 Billion Home Health -$39 Billion Medicare Part B -$25 Billion Hospital DSH Payments -$25 Billion Medicare Part D -$10 Billion Medical Imaging -$1 Billion Preventative Services -$700 Million Durable Medical Equipment -$1 Billion Power-Driven Wheelchairs -$800 Million Hospice -$100 Million Medicare Improvement Fund -$20 Billion Medigap -$100 Million Total Medicare Cuts -$523 Billion more

Resolved Question: What cuts would you make in Medicare that would not hurt Medicare beneficiaries?

If you were running the program, how would you save money? Here are a couple of examples to consider: 1. Eliminate the middleman in claims processing. Have Medicare clams processed directly by HHS employees and not contract this business out to private insurance companies. 2. Stop the practice of paying outrageous rental fees for durable medical equipment like wheelchairs, feeding pumps, specialty to beds used in treating pressure sores, etc. Buy these items outright, and when the patient no longer needs them, transfer them to another patient. What are your ideas? more

Resolved Question: How well will the Government run GM, Medicare, or Universal Healthcare?

A History Lesson: 1. In 1913, thinking it was being overcharged by the steel companies for armor plate for warships, the federal government decided to build its own plant. It estimated that a plant with a 10,000-ton annual capacity could produce armor plate for only 70% of what the steel companies charged. When the plant was finally finished, however -- three years after World War I had ended -- it was millions over budget and able to produce armor plate only at twice what the steel companies charged. It produced one batch and then shut down, never to reopen. 2. Or take Medicare. Other than the source of its premiums, Medicare is no different, economically, than a regular health-insurance company. But unlike, say, UnitedHealthcare, it is a bureaucracy-beclotted nightmare, riven with waste and fraud. Last year the Government Accountability Office estimated that no less than one-third of all Medicare disbursements for durable medical equipment, such as wheelchairs and hospital beds, were improper or fraudulent. Medicare was so lax in its oversight that it was approving orthopedic shoes for amputees. 3. When the federal government nationalized the phone system in 1917, justifying it as a wartime measure that would lower costs, it turned it over to the Post Office to run. (The process was called "postalization," a word that should send shivers down the back of any believer in free markets.) But despite the promise of lower prices, practically the first thing the Post Office did when it took over was . . . raise prices. more

Resolved Question: Would you look for a new job?

I work for a D.M.E company . (durable Medical Equipment) I have been here for a full year and we've had our ups and downs and in this time of work field you have to expect that especially in this economy. Well about three months ago our payroll was delayed 3 days due to Medicare expenenes, etc etc. They said it happens every few years and we'll be back to normal in no time.. .. Well turns out it's happening again. We got an e mail and it's again delayed for 7 days.. To add to being frusterated and upset , Last week was time for my review and my raise.. of course they said that we are in a raise freeze..... Well today guess what.. They hired a new representative... but they can't pay us on time and I can't get my deserved raise but they hire a new person ??? I'm angry and confused and to add to this all my husband works fast food and we don't have that much money from him so my income is everything.. And I'm 9 months pregnant and just this stresses me out like no other !!! and obviously i can't go looking for a new job right now... But I love this place but I'm just worried.. People that have been here for over 4 years say it comes with the territory and there not worried but to me it's huge.. they said last time it happens every few years and now it's happened twice in 3 months.. !!!!! more

Resolved Question: What is the maximum you can claim for out of pocket medical expenses on your tax return?

Our family spent about $14,000+ from out of pocket for medical expenses (prescriptions, oral braces each for twin sons and emergency medical treatment and durable medical equipment for one son breaking his foot). Can we claim the entire amount on our 1040 form for 2008 taxes towards a refund, or does the US Government place a cap on medical expenses? Thanks for your time! more

Resolved Question: Insurance company says new cochlear implant processor is not medically necessary...how can I get them to pay?

My daughter now has a behind the ear cochlear implant processor. She just turned 8 and had the first one for 6 years. Insurance company won't pay because they say it is not "medically necessary" and the other one was working fine (in their opinion). From what I understand, medicaid pays for replacement of such "durable medical equipment" every 5 years because of the wear and tear on the device. However, the insurance company won't reimburse us the $5000 the new one cost. Her dad and i don't regret purchasing it, but we tried to make the point that like any piece of technology things have to be updated and replaced in order to work properly and how can a then 6 year old (she has had the new one for a year), communicate to us if there are slight changes to the sound she hears. We are on our last appeal and are desperate. I would appreciate any suggestions, advice, etc. even if you have experience with receiving reimbursement for a different type fo durable medical equipment. Than more

Resolved Question: Can anyone decipher my physical therapy script for thumb rehabilitation??

7 weeks ago I had surgery to reattach the extensor tendons in my thumb after a near severing accident. I had the cast and 2 pins removed yesterday and was given a script for physical therapy. They are closed for the weekend, but I would like to start some light exercises(if possible). My script reads as follows: Hand Therapy 2-3 x week Durable Medical Equipment: dynamic PIP extension splint prn Diagnosis: 727.63 Ruptured Tendon Extensor Hand and Wrist AROM, PROM, AAROM CMC IP and MP left thumb intrinsic muscle stretching scar massage and desensitization edema control with coban wraps modalities may include iontophoresis with NaCl to scars prn, heat, ice advance to strength as tol; may use therapeutic putty night extension splinting of IPJ and protection at work HEP I have no clue what any of this means and if some one could explain to me what this all means I would greatly appreciate it.My thumb feels fine, but is very tight. I cannot move the upper knuckle(closest to the tip) on my own. I can move the lower knuckle, but only about 3/4 of an inch. It was crushed, broken and lacerated by an engine cover on a caterpiller machine between the 2 knuckle(thank god no injury to the joints). The doc said one tendon was severed and the other was damaged. Thanks for any help!!ATTENTION. My question is asking what all the stuff above means. Not whether you think I should wait to talk to the physical therapist. If you took the time to read my question, there wouldn't be 2 answers already with absolutely no relevance to my question. Thank You. more

Resolved Question: Purchase of durable medical equipment?

My health plan is very specific that If I need a durable medical equipment and it is cheaper to purchase than to rent, then that durable medical equipment should be purchased. However, my insurance company says that my device, a Bi-Pap machine to treat sleep apnea requires "substantial and signficative servicing" and it is must be a rental to protect my health. This sounds very bogus. The machine has a 2 year warranty, and it is more expensive to rent 2 year than to purhcase the Bi-pap machine now. I filed a complaint, but my insurance company is saying they will not change this because it is their own internal policy. My insurance says this machine is a "continous rental". Since I have this medical condition for all my life, this means an astronomical amount of money. (at least, in my perception). How come the insurance's "internal policy" can be against what is determined in the text of my own policy? (If it is cheaper to purchase, then it should be purchased). more

Resolved Question: Is there an oumbudsman group/website to assist with health insurance problemsThey don't want to pay claims

Health insurance companies today don't care about the subscriber. I hate mine, and it is just a "wearing down'" after you call and call and appeal and appeal and then they pay out under $5 for claims !! I am fed up. No one assists you at your employment and it is just a joke. High premiums and you can't get them to pay claims for under $100 for durable medical equipment. The health care system is a rip off!!! Aren't there any action groups to assist us !!!??? I feel I have nowhere to turn to check to make sure I am being told the truth about what is paid for and what is not. Vague is all I can say about the policy manual about DME's and they tell you "it has to be reviewe" Who are these people anyways. You can't to in person you can only handle on the phone.
