From wheelchairs and walkers to orthopedic shoes and needles, Medicare buys tens of thousands of products every day for elderly Americans. And as the single largest buyer of medical products, you'd think it would at leastget a volume discount. But it doesn't. In fact, Medicare doesn't even get the best price. According to their own auditors, Medicare knowingly overpays for almost everything it buys. Examples include: -- $7,215 to rent an oxygen concentrator, when the purchase price is $600. -- $4,018 for a standard wheelchair, while the private sector pays $1,048. -- $1,825 for a hospital bed, compared to an Internet price of $1,071. -- $3,335 for a respiratory pump, versus an advertised price of $1,987. -- $82 for a diabetic supply kit, instead of a $47 price on the Web. Last year, the Health and Human Services Department tried to replace its archaic fixed-price fee schedule for 10 commonly purchased products with a competitive bidding program in 10 cities. The department said the program could save Medicare $125 million in a single year, or $1 billion if adopted nationwide. Resolved Question: I would like advice on how to win an appeal and how to receive an increase in benefits from the VA.?

I recently filed for an increase in disability compensation for my generalized anxiety disorder, for which I currently receive 30%, and an appeal for a denied claim of shin splints. Shin Splints: I have been out of the Marine Corps since 2006 and have filed an appeal on my shin splints 3 times, all of which were denied because "they can not be found to be service-related." Mind you, that I never had shin splints until after I was in for over a year. I was on two, six month limited duty boards and was evaluated by orthopedic surgeons on the matter. The ortho doc told me that my bone and joint structure were not capable of running long distances on a regular basis and that is why I had the shin splints so bad. Now I am working as a custodian and am on my feet constantly and my shins are really starting to bother me again. The VA sent me a letter requesting more information to show how my condition is service related, DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE ON THIS? I still have my medical record and can show them the numerous times that I have been seen for this condition, so should I just send them copies of all the visits? Anxiety Disorder: I have a Bachelor of Science Degree, but due to my anxiety, can not stand sitting in an office all day long. Therefore, I got a job as a custodian. However, I tend to get bored since I work at such a higher pace than my colleagues, and my anxiety starts to flare up. I have seen a doctor outside of the VA for this condition and she put me on a medication that has helped more than any the VA ever put me on, but the VA does not supply this. I currently receive 30% for my anxiety, but feel that it has worsened significantly since I got out. Again, the VA sent me a letter requesting more information on "how" my condition has worsened. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY ADVICE ON HOW TO PROVE THIS TO THEM IN ORDER TO INCREASE MY COMPENSATION? Thank you all for anyone who helps. more

I went to EIGHT pharmacy's and medical supply stores today to try and get someone to cover the cost of crutches for my son who sprained his ankle yesterday. I am a county employee so my fist stop was the county hospital pharmacy...who referred me to the Orthopedic Department. After spending 20 minutes circling the parking lot for an empty space, I tried two pharmacies down the street then three more in another neighborhood near a local hospital. The last one finally referred me to the place where I got the crutches. Hopefully the insurance will cover the costs. They said there is a possibility it may not. So how is your medical coverage? more

Resolved Question: Question about walking on a broken ankle.?

I broke my ankle 5 weeks ago. The break was on the right side of my ankle. I had surgery 4 weeks ago and they put 3 screws in my ankle. 2 weeks ago my orthopedic doctor put a cast on my ankle and today I went in for my follow-up and he said I can start applying pressure to my foot which means I can pretty much start walking with the cast on. So I started walking with my cast on (I went to a medical supply store and bought a cast shoe) and I was pain free but after awhile my ankle started to bother me WHEN I WOULD WALK and it was on the opposite side of the ankle I broke at where I was really feeling some pain as I would walk. Now my question is, Is the pain coming from my ankle being stiff since I haven't walked on in in over a month? My x-rays showed my ankle was looking perfect. The more I'm walking on it the more im getting used to it but i'm just wondering if I should keep taking it easy..or should I just man up and this is all part of the process of getting my ankle up to speed? more

My niece and nephew have been neglected and I have them in my custody. My nephew needs emergency dental care and my niece has scoliosis-orthopedic. The mother, my sister will NOT give me their SS #'s so that I can get them medical. Im frustrated and need help. Im not getting any fianancial aide for them and will be fine in a few weeks financially but still she doesn't want to cooperate. This is the same sister that has a drug addiction.The father just left out of state with girlfriend and didn't supply me with nothing but Power of Attorney. I need to have Legal Documents stating I have custody in order for SS dept to release them. What can I do? more

Resolved Question: Is it normal for swelling to occur six months after an ankle sprain?

I had a severe ankle sprain six months ago. The ER wrapped it, gave great instructions, & supplied crutches. Two days later my PCP gave me a walking boot (with an air bladder) to use instead of the crutches. Approximately two weeks later I saw an orthopedic physican and he said no to physical therapy. He did mention that I had weak ankles prior to the injury & suggested a simple surgery to strengthen them -- after the swelling subsides. Five+ months later, my ankle still has considerable swelling by the end of the day...and earlier if I'm fairly active. I wear an ankle brace when exercising and other sporting activities...but it still hurts occasionally and doesn't feel stable. The orthopedic doc blew me off when I voiced my concerns, and I can't see my PCP right away since it's not an acute care issue. I'm not asking for medical advice in lieu of a doctor's appointment--but has anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do? Did the issue resolve w/o medical treatment? more
