Medical Laboratory Supply Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: World Health Organization pleads with Israel to allow aid?

From the U.N.: World Health Organization Hundreds of items of equipment have been waiting to enter Gaza for up to a year, procured by WHO and other organizations, says Mr Tony Laurance, head of WHO's office for Gaza and the West Bank. These items include CT scanners, x-rays, fluoroscopes, infusion pumps, medical sterilization gasses, laboratory equipment, UPS (uninterrupted power supply) batteries, and spare parts for support systems like elevatorMr. Richi: Israel turned over Gaza to the Palestinians in 2006 when Hamas won. They are a government in exile. Israel wont allow important items in so Gaza can have a strong economy. They cant leave their homeland because like Palestinians who are in other countries, they dont have welfare and no rights. they want to be free like everyone. Rockets are a response to the occupation and Israel's other provocative tactics. more

Voting Question: Walton Medical Laboratory?

Margaret Walton spent 10 years working in the laboratory at City Hospital. During that time, she advanced to the position of director of the laboratory and completed an MBA degree. She felt that opportunities for further advancement at the hospital were limited and was looking for a new challenge. She took a course in entrepreneurship and was fascinated by the idea of starting her own business. Walton decided that she would open an independent laboratory to provide medical tests for independent medical practices. She believed that she could help physicians reduce both their capital requirements and administrative chores, as well as provide more accurate testing. Walton began assembling information. She discovered a piece of land available near a number of independent medical practices. The land could be purchased for $100,000, and a suitable building would cost approximately $400,000. The building would have a useful life of approximately 40 years. Laboratory equipment would cost $1 million. The equipment would have a life of 7 years for tax purposes, but would actually last 10 years. Although the business could continue indefinitely, Walton wanted to do the analysis based on the assumption of a life similar to that of the laboratory equipment:10 years. In addition to fixed asses, working capital such as cash, supplies, receivables, and payables would be needed. Walton wanted to maintain a minimum cash balance of $20,000. She estimated that $100,000 of supplies would be needed initially, and accounts payable at $40,000. She estimated that the cash, supplies, receivables, and payables categories would double at the end of the first year and would not increase thereafter. Walton predicted revenue of $600,000 during the first year and $1,200,000 each year thereafter. She estimated that labor expenses, including a salary for her equal to what she was now earning, of $300,000 in the firs year and $480,000 each year thereafter. She estimated a supplies expense of $120,000 in the first year and $190,000 each year thereafter. SHe estimated overhead expense, other than depreciation, of $100,000 a year. Looking ahead, Walton estimated that the equipment would have a negligible value in 10 years, while the building would have lost one-fourth of tits value and the land 1 would still be worth $100,000. She guessed that supplies inventory could be sold for half its cost, and other working capital items would be settled at their book values. Walton turned her attention to financing. She had limited capital of her own and would need to seek outside investors. She had heard enough horror stories about problems that occurred when companies could not make payments on debts, and she wanted to avoid those troubles. Thus, she wanted to try to arrange all equity financing, and use a bank line of credit only for temporary needs. Walton decided on a plan involving ten wealthy investors, preferably senior retired physicians who would then serve on the board of directors. She would fund the project by creating eleven shares – one share free to herself as a founder’s share and one share to each of the investors. Each investor would then invest 10 percent of the capital requirements. Walton tentatively discussed the project with several senior retire physicians to see what would be required. They viewed this as an investment of moderate risk and indicated that they would want a 12 percent after tax return from an investment of this type. While several investors encourages her to continue, they were naturally unwilling to make a commitment without a proposal and a thorough financial analysis. Walton began to develop a profitability analysis and a proposal. She had to choose between the corporate tax form and an S form. She estimated that most investors would be in 28 percent tax brackets. All funds not needed internally would be paid out to the shareholders. She thought she could be ready to start by the first of the year, so assets would be considered placed in service in January. Case questions 1. Identify all cash flow on the assumption the business is taxed at a 28 percent tax rate. 2. Prepare a net present value analysis. 3. Does this investment provide a satisfactory rate of return to investors? 4. Is it fair and reasonable for Walton to get one-eleventh of the company without putting up equity capital of her own? more

Resolved Question: Rework three sentances from my resume please help, i'm hopeless?

I'm going to give you three job titles, what I did at those positions, and the sentences on my resume, and lets see if you can make them sound any better. I know that whats on my resume right now is weak but I need it very concise, I am trying to highlight my education and not the experince listed here. Fyi, I'll be applying for environmental technology jobs which might involve either office, field, or Laboratory work. JOB Intern - department of fisheries and oceans shadowed fishery officers daily. used their GPS software to track boats, accompanied detachment supervisor on meeting with high level fishery officers. worked in the field catching poachers. experienced stake outs. helped the clerk file and process fishing license applications. answered phones/questions, participated in local festival and PR activities. WHATS ON MY RESUME Worked alongside fishery officers involved in regulations and office procedures at all levels, worked in both a field and office environment. JOB - Garden Attendant - Hospital Pond Remediation Project The project cleaned up a pond previously filled with medical waste. unfortunately i was hired after the pond had be changed into a hiking trail and community garden. i did mostly gardening work, much of it was labor intensive, planting trees, watering a couple hundred plants daily, mowing a couple huge fields weekly. in relation to my training i also advised keeping some stick debris in the pond (it looked bad but its good for the health), and advised on what paint to use for a rock mural. I also helped plan a compost pile (i'm not sure if the plans ever got carried out). WHATS ON MY RESUME Labor intensive work, made recommendations on eco-friendly products to utilize in the area in addition to starting a compost initiative. JOB - Volunteer/Group Leader -Girl Guides of Canada I have a troop of girls ages 5-6. every week i tailor activities from their curriculum to meet their outcomes. i purchase all the supplies and lead the activities. there is a lot of responsibility involved, and i feel like i've accomplished a lot because they're ahead of where they need to be. WHATS ON MY RESUME Planned a curriculum to meet program goals, delivered the curriculum in an appropriate format exceeding everything that was necessary to accomplish that year. more

Resolved Question: Is it bad to be in the GLBT community but be against gay men giving blood?

My reasoning for this? See..I'm a medical laboratory scientist (the people who work in the hospital lab analyzing all your specimens to give you your results). So part of that includes working in blood banks. Now, I'm a transman, and pansexual, but I agree with the ban on gay men giving blood. I understand *everyone* is the "exception". Every gay man that I talk to about this tells me he's in a long term, monogamous relationship and they're both HIV negative. However, if that were true then why are gay men one of the highest risk groups for HIV? I UNDERSTAND other groups get HIV too, but it's still the most prevalent among gay men. Also, MY concern is not just about HIV. Gay men are also at increased risk of spreading hepatitis, campylobacter bacteria, E.coli, and other things associated with anal sex as well. Most enteric bacterial infections are spread through fecal/oral routes. And yes, we do test for these things in the lab. However..there is NO lab test that is 100% accurate and specific. And when it comes to blood, we have 0 room for error, because if we make a mistake we could kill someone. We have all kinds of federal agencies breathing down our necks including the FDA, who was the one who put the ban on gay men giving blood in the first place. I get kind of tired of gay men saying it's discrimination. It's really not. It's a public health issue. If it were discrimination, we'd deny gay men from receiving blood as well. But we don't. Instead, we make sure that blood we give to that gay man meets the stringent requirements needed to make sure that blood is safe to transfuse. So why would we deny a blood donor from donating who say...traveled to another country, got a piercing, a tattoo recently, received certain immunizations in a certain time frame, etc who have a lower risk of contaminating the blood supply, but allow a group that statistics have shown have a higher risk of contaminating the blood supply? That just doesn't make sense to me.Oh and john w...the reason african-american women are at increased risk? Because of gay/bi black men on the "down low".john...actually, yes. It IS being considered and debated by the CDC and FDA right now. more

Resolved Question: Would JWs accept artificial blood from embryonic stem cells? Would that be ethical given their stance on blood?

http://uk.news.yahoo.com/4/20090323/tuk-scientists-bid-to-create-blood-in-la-dba1618.html "Scientists are hoping to produce an unlimited supply of infection-free blood using embryonic stem cells. The results could provide an unlimited supply of blood for emergency transfusions. The three-year project will be led by the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service (SNBTS) and includes NHS Blood and Transplant and the Wellcome Trust, the world's biggest medical research charity. A spokeswoman for the National Blood Service for England and North Wales said negotiations on the joint research project were at an advanced stage and that legal, rather than scientific, issues were holding up the announcement. A spokesman for the Wellcome Trust added that complicated legal issues were still being ironed out between all the parties involved but that an announcement was likely to be made in the coming week. Researchers will test human embryos left over from IVF treatment to find those that are genetically programmed to develop into the "O-negative" blood group, which is the universal donor group whose blood can be transfused into anyone without fear of tissue rejection. The relatively rare blood group - it is applicable to about 7 per cent of the population - could then be produced in unlimited quantities from embryonic stem cells because of their ability to multiply indefinitely in the laboratory. The idea of destroying embryos to create stem cells raises ethical issues, but the newspaper reports that, in theory, just one embryo could meet the nation's needs." Is it not misleading to call any such resultant blood supplies 'artificial' as it will be entirely human? So if JWs must "abstain from blood" according to their interpretation of that Bible verse, what will their ethical reasoning be on this forthcoming development? They are 'allowed' to accept blood fractions, after all. Could they call this a 'fraction'? Or are they categorically against using human embryos for research purposes? For foxhole atheist: Dream On quoted from some Wt.Soc literature but omitted to give the reference. Here are extracts from The Watchtower 15 June 2004: "Since blood can be processed beyond those primary coponents [red cells, white cells, platelets, plasma serum] questions arise about fractions derived from the primary blood components... Blood is complex. Even the plasma - which is 90% water - carries scores of hormones, inorganic salts, enazymes, and nutrients, including minerals and sugar. Plasma also carries such proteins as albumin, clotting factors, and antibodies to fight diseases. Technicians isolate and use manuy plasma proteins. For example, clotting factor VIII has been given to hemophiliacs, who bleed easily. Or if someone is exposed to certain diseases, doctors might prescribe injections of gamma globulin, extracted from the blood plasma of people who already had immunity..."White blood cells may be a source of interferons and interleukins, used to treat some viral infections and cancers. Platelets can be processed to extract a wound-healing factor..." Hope that helps answer your question. more

Voting Question: HIV positive but virus not present? wtf! need answers?

I'm a bit nervous about writing this here since my blood may be worth a big value. just maybe.. and I don't wanna be held for ransom if it even is.. HA!! but like wise.. I tested positive on a new infection to HIV-1. My first test the Anti-body test came positive, then the western blot came reactive.. but the rest were weakly reactive and some non-reactive. So the doctor ran the VL load and it was <50 under or undetectable. It stayed like that ever since. I was told that this is very unusual since new infections should have a viral load, and its unusual because im not like the "other" long term non-progresses, im different. So now the doctors think that my body may have "Cured" itself from the virus (virus can no longer replicate), but ridding of the virus however not possible yet... The virus can still remain in some flesh tissue or brain tissue or even the lymph nodes. So how this came about is the specialist thinks that my body has instructed a message to the T8 & T4 to Delete its own CCR5 receptors and self destruct the cells already infected = "the curing of the speared" of the virus. They also check the semen and spinal fluid for the virus and shipped it to a special lab out in CA. The findings were the virus was not present. I had two PCR tests ran, because no one knew if I was really infected or not despite the Western Blot tests. But soon after the second PCR test came in, the specialist get all hush hush, and ask for my consent to release documents to some Health Organization thing.. soon I get a call from a Merek Corp. Wanting me as research and will get FDA permission to conduct research on me.. of course i was suckered into signing but now im worried, I ain't no professional i just want to know whats going on, and the doctors have stopped giving me details. Any way, when i was at the doctors office, while waiting in the waiting room I stole my file records went acorss the street and copied all the tests results and sure enough no one noticed since it took years for the doctor to come in the office, I shoulda took some Q-tips and some other supply's and stashed them in my bad too!.. HA! you know the have a free sale and medical supply's;) wink wink.. but anyway I don't know how to interpret the tests so I'm going to post it here and I guess a pro help me? Same time I think its a bit un-ethical for docs to be all hush about the details of something unless there trying to protect something i don't know. So here as follows: U.S. IND, NO: 10,887 PROTOCOL: V520-023-00 STUDY ID: MQM SITE#: 16 ALLOCATION#: 09954 Absolute CD4 (IN RANGE) = 990 Absolute CD8 = 525 Multispot HIV 1/2 SCRN = REACTIVE HIV-1 AB WESTERN BLO = POSITIVE P18 = Weakly Reactive P24 = Reactive P31 = Reactive P40 = Reactive GP41 = Non Reactive P51 = Reactive P55= Weakly Reactive P65 = Reactive GP120=Non Reactive VL=<49 Undetected DNA PCR = To be followed (verbal Positive) 5 Weeks Later they ran the another test. Public health Laboratory Report Specimen h2275000 HIV 1/2 Screen MEIA = Reactive HIV-1/HIV-2 Supplemental EIA = Reactive HIV-1 Western Blot = Reactive HIV 1 p24 Antigen screen = Non-reactive HIV 1 DNA PCR = Non-Reactive ---- a different sheet from a lab in NV with no name just a serial #:15042018 888588-9 and then a barcode P18 Reactive P24 Non-Reactive P31 Non-Reactive P40 Non-Reactive GP41 Non-Reactive P51 Reactive P55 weakly reactive P65 weakly reactive Gp120 Non Reactive Western BLO Positive VL<49 Not Detected but 5 weeks ago I was reactive to these tests, and was confirmed it was not error or mistaken by the lab.. so what does this mean? p.s VL load is still under 49 and not detected. I was told that I am just like 0.18% of the population of HIV infected persons known to be "Elite Long term non progresser" but my system has also deleted the CCR5 Receptor and Created an "unknown receptor" (not yet known in any medical book, i think) they took out sooo much blood and i have yet to have any answer in to what the hell is going on with me. They are sending my blood to different countries and acorss the nation to be studied further. And yet no findings from the CDC about the mystery so called protein in my cell or receptor thing or whatever the hell it is. They stabbed needles in my back to get spinal fluids and some other samples of stuff including semen. but i get the round about on a straight answer and all they do is beat around the bush on things. Now they want a sample of my bone marrow.. like wtf.. can someone tell me any idea of whats going on with a simple answer no beating around the bush.. and anyone know more about Merek and what they are doing with my blood, i asked and all i get is research.. thats all anyone know the real scoop?I was also told this is a "functional cure" to the HIV virus and that I will never progress, or become sick with aids forever. True ? I hope.. more

Voting Question: Which area of medical sales is the best way to go after I earn my degree?

Hello, I am 28 years old, in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, and back in school to finish my degree. After career & personality tests and much research, I'm seriously leaning towards a sales career in the medical business. I have about a year and a half left of school, and am considering attaining a Bachelors in Business Marketing. I've heard that the majority of successful medical sales reps are young, female, attractive and outgoing. (If that offends anyone, I apologize. It's not my personal opinion, since I obviously have not had any real world experience in the feild. It's the opinions of many of the professionals I've spoken to about my career path.) Yes, I do fall into that category however. How important that is to my questions depends on the person answering. Also, I realize this is a hard business to break into. That you have to know people to get in, but once you're in, you're in. (This pertains to one of my questions later.) My questions are as follows: 1) Out of all of the specfic fields in medical sales (i.e. pharmaceutical sales, laboratory sales, clinical diagnostics sales, DNA sales, medical supplies sales, medical equipment sales, imaging sales, etc.), what is the overall "best", in your opinion, and why? 2) In your opinion, what are the 3 best qualities and the 3 worst qualities of this position? 3) What Bachelors degree do you think would be best for your specific choice? 4) What experience do you have? 5) What type of work can I get into now, that will not only help me to gain business to business sales experience while attaining my degree, but possibly help me to get my foot in the door later (or give me the opportunity to network to help me get in the door later)? 6) Are there any type of certifications or accreditations that I could attain on the side while in school that will benefit my career or help me to land a job? 7) In your opinion, what are the best 2 or 3 companies in the DFW area to work for in your chosen specific area of medical sales? 8) What areas in medical sales are the least likely to be seriously affected by the economy with layoffs, etc. (Which has the best job security?) You'd REALLY help me out if you could answer any or all of my questions. If you are in one of these fields, when answering, it might help if you think about this: "If you could go back, do it all over again with the knowledge you have now, what would you do different? What would you tell your younger, inexperienced self to help you earlier in your career?" Thank you all in advance!! I REALY appreciate your help!! more

Resolved Question: Can someone put this into layman's terms for me?

My husband and I have an appointment with the reproductive endocrinologist next week. I submitted an inquiry to the insurance company to find out what exactly the cover and here was my response: Per your benefits booklet on page 25: Infertility Services As a HealthSelect participant you may be eligible for infertility services which may include, diagnostic laboratory and x-ray procedures, therapeutic injections and surgical treatment necessary for the diagnosis and treatment of involuntary infertility. Covered services do not include sterilization reversal, transsexual surgery, gender reassignment, artificial insemination and related services, intrafallopian transfer, or in vitro fertilization. Also excluded from coverage are any services or supplies used in any procedures performed in preparation for or immediately after any of the above-referenced excluded procedures. Of course, the patient must be covered on the date of service to be eligible for benefits. This is not a guarantee of coverage or payment and all claims are subject to medical necessity and contract limitations So, what does that include? Am I in good shape? Where would IUI be included? Sorry so many questions, this will be our first appt with the RE. I'm sure they will go over this with us but I was just wanting a head's up. Thanks guys! more

Resolved Question: Can you critique my internship cover letter?

I am applying for an internship at my local aquarium, and need some input on how my cover letter is. Just some background info: the cover letter requires you to apply to up to three of the listed internships in order of preference. It also asks for your career goals and what days you're available to work. What do you think? To whom it may concern: I am delighted to apply for the internships available at the ******** Aquarium this summer. My unique combination of work experience and my status as a dean’s list biology major at the University of ************ in my junior year make me an ideal candidate for a summer internship with The ******** Aquarium. I have had extensive coursework in biology, including marine biology, as well as general and organic chemistry. I have also acquired laboratory skills in both fields by successfully performing several experiments, including chemical reactions and analyzing specimens through a microscope. That is why I am firstly applying for the Water Quality Analyst Internship. I also have direct experience in animal care through my work at Petco Animal Supplies Inc. in ******* MA and the ******** Animal Shelter, and feel that I am also a strong candidate for the Aquarium Medical Center Internship, which also emphasizes the care of individual animals and the maintenance of animal habitats. Though my previous internship at ********* General Hospital, I have acquired internet-based research skills and basic office work experience, which relate closely to the Sustainable Fisheries Initiative. I feel that my background in this area make me a competitive candidate for this position as well. I believe an internship at the ********** Aquarium would supply me with additional skills to compliment my future career goals. I want to continue to learn about different organisms and one day work in a research laboratory developing and improving animal medicine. I am confident that I will be an asset to the ********** Aquarium community. I am available on any day of the week starting in late may. I am contactable by phone at ********* or by e-mail at *********. I look forward to hearing from you in the future. more

Resolved Question: Can I use an 2 year associate Medical Laboratory Tech degree to work as a Medical Assistant?

Resolved Question: Would you proof read my essay for a college scholarship?

“Why I am a worthy candidate to receive a scholarship and how it will help me achieve my goals” Why am I a worthy candidate to receive a scholarship? When a grown man of 33 years of age looks in to the future what does he see? Many beautiful houses, kids laughing as they ride there bikes down the street, families leaving on week long vacations, kids telling other kids that their mom is a doctor, and their father well has been layed off or is flipping Big Macs at the local McDonalds. I have a beautiful family, and a loving wife that supports me on the decision to return to college after being gone for 10 years. My father after graduating from high school enlisted into the United States Navy, and served our country over in Vietnam. My mother after graduating high school started to work for Mr. Ralph Stolle. My parents never had the opportunity to go to college and receive a Degree, and the thought of finally being the first person in my family to receive a degree makes me proud, and would make my family proud. To have a career that my children, my wife and I can be proud of, and not afraid to say “My father or husband is a Medical Laboratory Technician is a proud and goose bump feeling to have. I am worthy of a scholarship because I work hard for everything I have. I want to be able to support my family during hard economical times. Layoffs from major manufactures only depress, and put a financial burden on the family. I want to be able to do more than flip the big Macs at McDonalds for seven dollars per hour. When I go to a special event or even hang out with new friends sometimes its embarrassing to actually tell them what you do for a living. That is when the bad conscience takes hold and says to me “ Just tell them something like you’re a doctor or some kind of professional!” is what I would say but not all the time. I grew tired of saying that along time ago. Now I’m not getting any older and wiser I need and want to study hard and receive my degree and give back to people and my family what they have been missing from me for the past 15 years. The scholarship that you are offering will help me to achieve my goals by supplying the money for tuition and books. My finances are wrapped up pretty tight in the web of this economic crunch. Family is very important to me and my wife and kids are all in school and now I want to go to school, work and receive my degree from Edison State Community College in Piqua, Ohio. When I look to the future pass the point of receiving my degree I dream of someday being able to teach other students like myself and give them the knowledge and strength to accomplish their dreams and aspirations just as I will teach and Inspire my children to believe they can accomplish anything they want if they are determined and want to work just a little harder. This is why I deserve the scholarship and how it will help me achieve my goals.  more

Resolved Question: I'm looking for a laboratory/medical hand tool that I've used in the past, but I don't know the name. Help.

This tool is metal and has a handle like a scalpel, except with a fixed head. The defining characteristic is that it has a somewhat short, pyramidal/arrow-shaped head that comes to a point. It's not a spatula or anything else that I've been able to find scouring the medical and laboratory supply catalogs. I'm working for a new lab and these tools have proved incredibly handy for me in the past and I would like to use them again. Any suggestions would be appreciated.Nope, it's not a trocar. This is a smaller hand-held instrument (very much like a scalpel) used for finer manipulations of things like a single embryo of corn, which is what I intend to use it for. Thanks for the suggestion though. more
