My name is LeeAnna, and I am planning a trip to Africa after my high-school graduation, summer 2011, along with long time certified Oregon midwife, Sherry Dress. Our purpose for this trip is to take medical supplies to birthing facilities in the area and train their local midwifes in order to better equip them for their important job as medical providers for pregnant women and their babies. This will be Sherry's second trip to Africa, however it will be my first time assisting her. 6,150 women die in child birth every year in Kenya due to lack of education and equipment. In order to better fulfill our goals in lowering that number, Sherry and I are looking for supportive companies who can donate equipment that we can personally deliver to the midwives in Africa. Any ideas of companies, churches, or centers that would be ideal to send letters to requesting for support? Thanks. moreResolved Question: How many years of schooling does a Biomedical engineer require?

I have a disability, spina bifida, and use a wheelchair, and ive basically never had a job. due to various things. some my fault, some out of my control. but now, im looking for something, ive basically had enough of not getting something out of life and not feeling a sense of purpose. like many people with disabilities, but due to the disability and never having worked i feel like i need to sort of prove to employers, and myself, that im capable of doing the kind of thing id like to try to get into. I recently decided a good area to work in would be something to do with medical/disability products/equipment/supplies/aids etc as, like i said im disabled myself, but obviosuly not on the medical side of things, it would be in a non degree requiring role. im thinking more on the sales, or storage and supplies side at my local hospital or something. and when i say medical supplies i dont just mean medical, i mean anything and everything you might find in a hospital. i found myself, last time i was on a hospital visit, looking at all the different things in the hospital, its a huge range of stuff, and i think it would be an interesting, varied job to work in that area. but as i i said because ive not had a job i feel the need to first show employers and myself that im capable, but the thing is, im 35 now, i just cant help thinking its a bit late for voluntary or work experience. would the NHS or anything like that be prepared to allow me to do something like voluntary or work experience as a way in? im more than prepared to to prove myself. moreResolved Question: Jobs that involve making lists of things?
Any ideas? preferably something that doesnt require a degree or ten, cos i havent got one, although i am prepared if possible to study towards one whilst working. Im a bit of a list writing geek, ive done lists (or spreadsheets) of things like my cd and dvd collections, books, comics, all sorts of stuff, and im wondering about using this skill as a possibility for work. I have also recently decided a good area to work in would be something to do with medical/disability products/equipment/supplies/aids etc., as im disabled myself, and when i say medical supplies i dont just mean medical, i mean anything and everything you might find in a hospital. i found myself, last time i was on a hospital visit, looking at all the different things in the hospital, its a huge range of stuff, and i think it would be an interesting, varied job to work in that area. but could the two be combined in some way? All i can think of really is working in the stores/distribution department of the local hospital, which would be good, but wanted more ideas. moreResolved Question: what kind of jobs are available in?
the medical/disability equipment/products/ability aids/supplies industry that dont require a degree? I have a disability, spina bifida, and i use a wheelchair, and since the government are now targeting disabled people even if they are not capable of work and making them look for work i have looked into things i'd like to do (if i had the choice), trying to beat the government at their own game and jumping before im pushed, and this industry really appeals. Ive spent my life around hospitals, doctors surgeries, podietrists etc and it sounds a bit sad but ive always been interested by the equipment and products i see, so ive decided thats what i want to get into, but as i said i dont have a degree (yet, i am prepared to work and study towards one at the same time though) I was just thinking working in the stores/supplies department of my local hospital would be a good way in as thousands of different products are stored in these places so i think it would be a good place to learn about them. and as i get DLA and hope to get tax credits too i dont mind (not that i would have the choice anyway) of taking a low paid job. Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated, i really want to get going with this like NOW lolI should also mention im not keen on a desk job,not one thats all day every day anyway, being a wheelchair user doesnt mean you cant move around, moreVoting Question: Abusive Mother who is Aging and still Abusive?
I was adopted and made to work on a farm. I was the only child. Growing up all I heard was that I was taking food out of their mouth, that I would be sent back if I didn't behave and do the work I was told to. They always borrowed farm equipment and didn't pay their bills for a year. As soon as I was old enough, I started buying junk farm equipment to fix so they would quit borrowing stuff. Over the years, I had to buy them furniture, ac units, and spent tens of thousand of dollars bailing hay for them for free and keeping them supplied in equipment. I finally got married at 40 and my mother did everything she could to stop it. The land I was promised after working the place all those years was withheld. They wouldn't even give me 1 acre to build a house on. They were in their 70's when I married so I just shrugged and said keep everything and left and bought my own land in the community. 15 years have passed and she complains to everyone in the small community about us and how she lives alone. We got her a $7,000 grant to fix her house, got her a medical alert button, arranged to have meds delivered to her house and a government van that will pick her up and take her to doctor appointments or grocery store. She _itches to everyone that will listen how we don't help her. My wife is the one that arranged all this help for her. We are paying off our land and house and can't take off to take her to appointments when their is transportation. Now, I am sick with stage 4 cancer, I don't have long to live, and she goes weeks without calling how I am. Now she is bitching at my wife for not telling her I was in the hospital. I have been hospitalized at least 9 times in the past 2 years. She has been told I am getting worse and to call more often if she wants to know how I am doing. My wife is either travelling to the hospital or nursing me at home or taking me to doctors appointments. My wife has told her she needs to call more often, that things are changing rapidly. She has not called and I am mad she is bitching at my wife, who has a full plate. With the abuse I endured as a child, I don't have much love for this woman and figure if she can't call, its no loss to me. But she is using the situation to get attention. She lives 10 minutes from me but won't visit. But now she is telling relatives and friends in this small community my wife is keeping her from visiting. I had it out with my mother and told her if she wants to know how I'm doing, just call. She claims it is too hard to call in the evenings and she forgets in the morning. Now she has a relative that wants to take her to come visit me in the hospital and I told them to wait till I get home. The relative is pissed at me for being mean to my mom. My mom puts on an act to get attention. In the past people were fooled by her act and helped her, only to hear thru a third party her complaints about them. One lady took her to the doctor, got her meds, took her to lunch, but made the"mistake" at stopping at HEB for a few groceries for herself. My mom complained to everyone, now that lady doesn't come around. My wife use to help her alot too but got tired of the complaining. We lost our business when I got sick, sold most of our farm equipment, and are holding on by the skin of our teeth to our house. This last incident has made me really bitter towards my Mom. I'm not well enough to protect my wife from this abuse that I put up with for too long. ANY IDEAS HOW TO PUT A STOP TO THIS? moreResolved Question: Why is Israel doing this and is it legal under international law?
1. Israel blocks over 50% of supply trucks headed for Gaza, causing mass malnutrition amongst people there. 2. Israel started blocking 75% of other goods headed for Gaza after Hamas was elected in 2008. 3. Israel blocks chocolate, jam, sage and coriander from entering Gaza. 4. Israel won't let parts to repair Gaza's power plant in so there are only half days of power there. 5. Israel won't let supplies enter Gaza to repair the sewage system so up to 95% of water there is unsafe for human consumption. 6. Israel blocks ALL export of goods from Gaza and as a result, 98% of industrial operations have shut down there, causing further poverty. 7. Israel won't allow in medical equipment and supplies to restore Gaza's damaged health-care system. Even for someone with a bias in favor of Israel, isn't this all enough to be considered human rights violations? IMO, this is part of Israel's *non*military genocide campaign which is supplemented with force as necessary. It is also now known that IDF leaders have partnered with energy companies to extract natural gas from areas belonging to Gaza. This is one reason for the naval blockade, so people won't go out there and see Israelis pumping out Gaza's natural gas resources.http://www.alternet.org/world/147132/7_questions_for_defenders_of_israels_inhumane_siege_of_gazaWow, what a bunch of intelligent responses so far.... A HEALTH CARE HORROR STORY FROM CANADA By DICK MORRIS & EILEEN MCGANN There are howls of outrage coming from the liberal community in Alberta, Canada. It seems that some doctors, desperate to protect their patients from the overcrowded and failing socialized medical system in their country, have set up private clinics to treat them. To circumvent Canadian laws, which prohibit charging for medical care, they have set up private, membership clinics where, for $2,000 a year, patients can access well staffed and equipped clinics and avoid the long waits and compromised care of the public system. The leading Canadian newspaper, the Globe and Mail, reports that "critics say that the clinics are taking physicians away from the public system making it even harder...to find a family doctor." David Eggen, executive director of a group that supports the Canadian socialized system, Friends of Medicare, said that it's already hard to find a family physician in Canada and that clinics like these, springing up in several Canadian cities, could make it even harder. It does not seem to have occurred to defenders of socialized medicine that the system itself is causing the doctor shortage. Cuts in medical fees, overcrowding of facilities, shortages of equipment and space, and bureaucratic oversight have all combined to drive men and women out of family medical practice. Now, with a critical shortage looming, those who can afford to pay for adequate care are opting out of the public system and, literally, taking their lives into their own hands. But it is illegal to make patients "have to pay a fee to gain access to health services" that are provided free by the government system. So patients and doctors are forming membership-only groups to avoid the legal penalties that could potential stop them from getting or giving the care that they need. This is where the United States is headed. Socialism dries up the supply of medical care and forces ever stricter rationing of the available resources. As Margaret Thatcher famously said, "Eventually socialism runs out of other peoples' money." With the full implementation of Obamacare and its likely cuts in physician reimbursement, more and more doctors will choose to opt out of Medicare and charge their patients for their care. The elderly who need specialized care will have no choice but to take out insurance, not to fill gaps in Medicare coverage, but to overlay the system with private coverage so they can get the care Medicare now provides to all seniors. If you want to see a family doctor, it will be rough unless you are paying for the care privately. And to see a specialist, at the low reimbursement rates afforded by the program in the future, will be well nigh impossible. Medical care for the elderly will become like public housing or public education in the inner city. Those who can afford to go elsewhere will. Those who can't will be left to fend for themselves in overcrowded public facilities that will be, at least, free. And then, as in Canada, liberal critics will rail, not against the system that dried up the resources in the first place or against the socialist rules that drove doctors out of medicine, but against the private clinics for resources from the public sector. By plunging our excellent medical care system into this new world of regulation, fee cuts, and care rationing, the U.S. is going down the disastrous road Canada has taken. Unless we can elect a Republican majority in November and a GOP president in 2012, this is our future. moreResolved Question: What do you think of this poem from Irish times?
What Is Not Allowed to enter Gaza; No tinned meat is allowed, no tomato paste, no clothing, no shoes, no notebooks. These will be stored in our warehouses at Kerem Shalom until further notice. Bananas, apples, and persimmons are allowed into Gaza, peaches and dates, and now macaroni (after the American Senator’s visit). These are vital for daily sustenance. But no apricots, no plums, no grapes, no avocados, no jam. These are luxuries and are not allowed. Paper for textbooks is not allowed. The terrorists could use it to print seditious material. And why do you need textbooks now that your schools are rubble? No steel is allowed, no building supplies, no plastic pipe. These the terrorists could use to launch rockets against us. Pumpkins and carrots you may have, but no delicacies, no cherries, no pomegranates, no watermelon, no onions, no chocolate. We have a list of three dozen items that are allowed, but we are not obliged to disclose its contents. This is the decision arrived at by Colonel Levi, Colonel Rosenzweig, and Colonel Segal. Our motto: ‘No prosperity, no development, no humanitarian crisis.’ You may fish in the Mediterranean, but only as far as three km from shore. Beyond that and we open fire. It is a great pity the waters are polluted – twenty million gallons of raw sewage dumped into the sea every day is the figure given. Our rockets struck the sewage treatments plants, and at this point spare parts to repair them are not allowed. As long as Hamas threatens us, no cement is allowed, no glass, no medical equipment. We are watching you from our pilotless drones as you cook your sparse meals over open fires and bed down in the ruins of houses destroyed by tank shells. And if your children can’t sleep, missing the ones who were killed in our incursion, or cry out in the night, or wet their beds in your makeshift refugee tents, or scream, feeling pain in their amputated limbs – that’s the price you pay for harbouring terrorists. From the U.N.: World Health Organization Hundreds of items of equipment have been waiting to enter Gaza for up to a year, procured by WHO and other organizations, says Mr Tony Laurance, head of WHO's office for Gaza and the West Bank. These items include CT scanners, x-rays, fluoroscopes, infusion pumps, medical sterilization gasses, laboratory equipment, UPS (uninterrupted power supply) batteries, and spare parts for support systems like elevatorMr. Richi: Israel turned over Gaza to the Palestinians in 2006 when Hamas won. Arabs try to assure the world that the "humanitarian aid" the "flotilla of lie" was carrying was something without which the life in Gaza would end the day after tomorrow. And al of a sudden, Hamas refuses to take it! The IDF Spokesman said Wednesday that "As of right now, the State of Israel(Medina´t Israel, for those who do not know (: ) has loaded 20 trucks with various types of aid found onboard the flotilla. Expired medication, clothing, blankets, some medical equipment and toys were among the aid found on the ships. "Unfortunately, the Hamas terror organization is unwilling to accept the cargo and the trucks filled with humanitarian aid have not been allowed to enter the Gaza Strip. It appears that Hamas is in fact stopping the transfer of the humanitarian aid". Security sources said that supplies from the flotilla continue to be taken off the seven ships that participated in it, and that truckloads of medical supplies, toys and clothing have already reached the Kerem Shalom crossing between Israel and Gaza. However, Hamas and Gaza based aid agencies are not responding, so far, to Israeli calls to come and get the goods. Why is Hamas refusing to accept the aid? moreResolved Question: I want to Buy Medical Equipment to supply a small clinic overseas?

An Israeli official has said that efforts will be made to stop the Freedom Flotilla, which intends to attempt to break the three-year blockade of the Gaza Strip. The Gaza-bound flotilla of eight ships, which left Turkey on Saturday, is carrying 10,000 tons of supplies, including building materials, which are not allowed into the territory because of the blockade. Greta Berlin, one of the organizers, said the cargo ships are carrying cement, prefab homes, lumber, window frames, paper for printing school books, children's toys, a full dentist's office, electric wheelchairs, and high-end medical equipment. One of the passengers on an 8 ship flotilla that will be heading to break the siege Gaza next week is Joe Meadors, a decorated Navy veteran and one of the survivors of the 1967 attack on the U.S.S. Liberty, in which Israeli fighter planes and ships killed 34 Americans and wounded 173. Israel has threatened this convoy from attempting to reach Gaza. These ships will be bringing badly needed building material, medical equipment and school supplies to Gaza. “It’ll be like old home week,” said Meadors, recalling the Israeli attack he survived 43 years ago. Margaret Walton spent 10 years working in the laboratory at City Hospital. During that time, she advanced to the position of director of the laboratory and completed an MBA degree. She felt that opportunities for further advancement at the hospital were limited and was looking for a new challenge. She took a course in entrepreneurship and was fascinated by the idea of starting her own business. Walton decided that she would open an independent laboratory to provide medical tests for independent medical practices. She believed that she could help physicians reduce both their capital requirements and administrative chores, as well as provide more accurate testing. Walton began assembling information. She discovered a piece of land available near a number of independent medical practices. The land could be purchased for $100,000, and a suitable building would cost approximately $400,000. The building would have a useful life of approximately 40 years. Laboratory equipment would cost $1 million. The equipment would have a life of 7 years for tax purposes, but would actually last 10 years. Although the business could continue indefinitely, Walton wanted to do the analysis based on the assumption of a life similar to that of the laboratory equipment:10 years. In addition to fixed asses, working capital such as cash, supplies, receivables, and payables would be needed. Walton wanted to maintain a minimum cash balance of $20,000. She estimated that $100,000 of supplies would be needed initially, and accounts payable at $40,000. She estimated that the cash, supplies, receivables, and payables categories would double at the end of the first year and would not increase thereafter. Walton predicted revenue of $600,000 during the first year and $1,200,000 each year thereafter. She estimated that labor expenses, including a salary for her equal to what she was now earning, of $300,000 in the firs year and $480,000 each year thereafter. She estimated a supplies expense of $120,000 in the first year and $190,000 each year thereafter. SHe estimated overhead expense, other than depreciation, of $100,000 a year. Looking ahead, Walton estimated that the equipment would have a negligible value in 10 years, while the building would have lost one-fourth of tits value and the land 1 would still be worth $100,000. She guessed that supplies inventory could be sold for half its cost, and other working capital items would be settled at their book values. Walton turned her attention to financing. She had limited capital of her own and would need to seek outside investors. She had heard enough horror stories about problems that occurred when companies could not make payments on debts, and she wanted to avoid those troubles. Thus, she wanted to try to arrange all equity financing, and use a bank line of credit only for temporary needs. Walton decided on a plan involving ten wealthy investors, preferably senior retired physicians who would then serve on the board of directors. She would fund the project by creating eleven shares – one share free to herself as a founder’s share and one share to each of the investors. Each investor would then invest 10 percent of the capital requirements. Walton tentatively discussed the project with several senior retire physicians to see what would be required. They viewed this as an investment of moderate risk and indicated that they would want a 12 percent after tax return from an investment of this type. While several investors encourages her to continue, they were naturally unwilling to make a commitment without a proposal and a thorough financial analysis. Walton began to develop a profitability analysis and a proposal. She had to choose between the corporate tax form and an S form. She estimated that most investors would be in 28 percent tax brackets. All funds not needed internally would be paid out to the shareholders. She thought she could be ready to start by the first of the year, so assets would be considered placed in service in January. Case questions 1. Identify all cash flow on the assumption the business is taxed at a 28 percent tax rate. 2. Prepare a net present value analysis. 3. Does this investment provide a satisfactory rate of return to investors? 4. Is it fair and reasonable for Walton to get one-eleventh of the company without putting up equity capital of her own? moreResolved Question: What do I do about my unreliable jogger's Heart Rate Monitor?
I gave up on my old HRM a while ago, and decided to buy a new one. I got on a fitness equipment review site, and selected a well reviewed model. Now this new HRM is giving me trouble also. I'm rather frustrated because I consider hitting my target heart rate to be an important part of my fitness program. I've changed the batteries. I've done what I could to clean the contacts, and the area of skin the contacts are put over. I've even used Clearasil figuring that it's skin oil and dirt cleansing qualities might help, and bought electro-conductive gel from a medical supply. I'm considering calling the manufacturers; but I'm afraid that it's not the HRM, but me that's the problem. This is the second HRM this has happened with after all. (It would work fine for the first couple months then it would get less and less reliable.) I'm afraid there's residues in my sweat that are killing electro-conductivity. Please help.Son of a... Your suggestion actually worked, TheDuck. At least as far as lately I couldn't even get the HRM to give me a heart rate at all. I put it on. It gave me a heart rate soon enough; and continued to give me a heart rate for several minutes. It stopped working just now. Not %100 encouraging. Not least of all since I still don't know what the greater problem was; and that seems to be deteriorating. I used a partially soaked Under Armor shirt, which naturally was freezing as I put it on. I'll try it tomorrow for a workout. The critical thing is getting a full workout out of the HRM without it crapping out on me. Even if that works, there's no guarrantees it will work again the next day, or a week from now.Apology accepted Ubermind. I'm afraid that's not anything not well known by users of HRMs. After all I've yet to hear of an HRM working dry. I don't think that Clearasil could cause a problem. Certainly I've only recently started using the Clearasil, and only in the hope that it would help. It should cleanse the skin of things that might interfere with electro-conductivity. It's not like I'm exposed to anything environmental. What's on my skin is what got there through my pores, residues from evaporated sweat. After that wet sweat from the exercise should be fine.Sorry TheDuck, I got ready for my workout, put on the soaked shirt, now luke warm after being put under scalding hot water, put on the chest band, and turned on the HRM. After waiting a couple minutes the watch gave up on getting a heart rate. Unless someone can offer another suggestion, I guess I'm going to have to call the manufacturers. Here's hoping I just have bad luck with receiving defective HRMs. moreResolved Question: HELP PLEASE!! PERSONAL FITNESS!!?

I use a Fisher & Paykel Flexifit 432 full-face mask with my BiPAP machine. The problem that I am having is with leakage around the bridge of my nose into my eyes or under my chin. I have tried adjusting the head straps and I even purchased an expensive gel insert that is supposed to lay on your face to improve the seal with no luck. Unfortunately, my BiPAP machine shuts down when it recognizes a big enough leak and I wake up every morning finding that the machine has shut itself off. When contacting the respiratory therapists at the medical supply store that I got my equipment they have only recommended making the mask set looser on my face which just makes the mask leak all over or purchasing a different and even more expensive little gel insert. Has anyone had a CPAP/BiPAP leak that they were able to fix with an easy solution? I run a medical supplies business in my home town. One day, a certain man approached me for assistance. He was to bid in a tender to supply and deliver some medical equipment which he claimed to literary have no knowledge about. On agreement that he would pay me for the services at the end of successful completion of the transaction. On that basis, we left discussing how much he was to pay me for latter. As per agreement, i guided this man through the tender (i.e cost prices, selling price and supporting catalogs plus warranty details). It was also further agreed i would have to import the products according to the costs i gave to him. A few weeks latter, he was given orders to supply two of the items he bid for. This man then decided to betray my trust. He bought one item directly using the information on the catalog and only came to me for the product that did not have full contact details on the catalog. He gave me part payment towards purchase of this item promising to bring the balance a few days latter so that i could import that one piece. As we spent time together, he managed to get information about my source for the same and also secretly ordered the same item he paid for to me. A few days latter, he came back to claim the money he paid in as deposit. When i tried to negotiate for my commission and consultation fee, he refused and reported me to the police for theft by agent. I agreed to pay him back 50% of the deposit through the police some 11 days back and i have received a court summon for Theft by agent from our local prosecutor. The scientists used a prototype tester about one square meter in size that shot a laser beam at water samples to stimulate photosynthesis in the algae. Some of the laser... Read More’s heat goes unused by the algae and is sent back into the water based on the condition of the algae and the photosynthesis rate. This returned heat creates sound waves that can be measured and analyzed with special underwater equipment, Dubinsky explained. The strength of these returned sound waves are then used to determine the health and contamination levels of the algae and the surrounding water. A general gauge of algal growth is the daily darkening color as the cells multiply. A more accurate measure of growth can be made by comparing actual cell numbers with the previous day's count. The number of cells can be determined by studying a sample from a culture under a 400X microscope. The sample is placed on a special slide called a ... Read Morehemacytometer. These slides are available from scientific or medical supply stores and come with instructions. To use the hemacytometer, place a pipet filled with a sample from the culture tank against the "V" groove of the slide (a cover slip must be in place). Withdraw the pipet before the sample runs off the flat grid area, but not before the grid area is completely covered with the algal suspension. Wait about five minutes for the cells to drift onto the grid. The grid area resembles the pound symbol (#) inside a square border so that there are nine equal squares. Each of the four corner squares are further divided into 16 smaller squares. The total number of algal cells in all 16 small squares in the four corner areas (64 total small sqs.) are counted. Divide this number by four, for an average, and multiply by 10,000 (hemacytometer volume factor). The product is equal to the number of cells per mL in the sample. Motile algae like I. galbana, must be killed before counting. A weak toxin such as acetic acid or ethanol may be used (one drop into 20-30 mLs of algal sample). Dense cultures (>3 million) should be diluted 1:10 to facilitate counting and to reduce error. Remember to multiply by 10 (for a 10:l dilution) or by the appropriate correction factor if a different dilution is made. There are numerous other methods to quantify algal densities, however using a microscope and hemacytometer, will reveal the presence of biological contaminants. so what i'm really asking is what algae is the best and cheepest to grow and how can i take a laser and help grow them! Anyone who helps i give great props too! moreResolved Question: Need to find employment in Springfield Missouri?

Contract health services that the hospitals use. They make more profit off of each health care dollar than the insurer. Doesn't that make them fair targets? No, I don't want that. Why does Obama have to create a group to hate?It appears by these answers that Libs are not satisfied and indeed want to take over and socialize the entire economy. JUST THE FACTS! THE COUNTRY of TEXOARKLA In case things get a little tougher during the next few months, we In LOUISIANA, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA & ARKANSAS have a plan. Maybe you don't know it, but LOUISIANA, TEXAS, OKLAHOMA & ARKANSAS have a legal right to secede from the Union. (Reference the Texas/Louisiana-American Annexation Treaty of 1848.) Us TEXOARKLANS love y'all Americans, but we'll probably have to take action since Barack Obama won the election and is now the President of the U.S.A. We'll miss ya'll though. Here is what can happen: 1. Barack Hussein Obama, after becoming the President of the United States, begins to try and create a socialist country, then TEXAS, LOUISIANA, ARKANSAS and OKLAHOMA announces that they are going to secede from the Union. 2. George W. Bush becomes the President of the Republic of TEXOARKLA. You might think that he doesn't talk too pretty, but we haven't had another terrorist attack and the economy was fine until the effects of Barney Frank and the Democrats lowering the qualifications for home loans came home to roost. So what does TEXOARKLA have to do to survive as a Republic? 1. NASA is just south of Houston, Texas. We will control the space industry. 2. We refine over 90% of the gasoline in the United States. 3. Defense Industry--we have over 65% of it. The term "Don't mess with TEXAS," will take on a whole new meaning. 4. Oil - we can supply all the oil that the Republic of TEXOARKLA will need for the next 300 years. What will the other states do? Gee, we don't know. Why not ask Obama? 5. Natural Gas - again, we have all we need and it's too bad about those Northern States. John Kerry and Al Gore will just have to figure out a way to keep them warm... 6. Computer Industry - we lead the nation in producing computer chips and communications equipment - small companies like Texas Instruments, Dell Computer, EDS, Raytheon, National Semiconductor, Motorola, Intel, AMD, Nortel, Alcatel, etc. The list goes on and on. 7. Medical Care - We have the research centers for cancer research, the best burn centers and the top trauma units in the world, as well as other large health centers. 8. We have enough colleges to keep educating and making smarter citizens: University of Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University, UL-Lafayette, UL-Monroe, University of Arkansas, LSU, Arkansas State University, Baylor, Rice, TCU, SMU and MANY more. 9. We have an intelligent and energetic work force and it isn't restricted by a bunch of unions. Here in TEXOARKLA, we are a Right-to-Work State and, therefore, it's every man and woman for themselves. We just go out and get the job done.. And if we don't like the way one company operates, we get a job somewhere else. 10. We have essential control of the paper, plastics, and insurance industries, etc. 11. In case of a foreign invasion, we have the TEXOARKLA National Guard, the TEXOARKLA Air National Guard, and several military bases. We don't have an Army, but since everybody down here has at least six guns and a pile of ammo, we can raise an Army in 24 hours if we need one. If the situation really gets bad, we can always call the Department of Public Safety and ask them to send over the Texas Rangers. 12. We are totally self-sufficient in beef, poultry, hogs, and several types of grain, fruit and vegetables and let's not forget seafood from the Gulf. Also, everybody down here knows how to cook them so that they taste good. We don't need any food from somewhere else. 13. FIVE of the ten largest cities in the United States and THIRTY TWO of the 100 largest cities in the United States are located in TEXOARKLA. And TEXOARKLA also has more land than California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, Maryland, Rhode Island and Vermont combined. 14. Trade: FIVE of the ten largest ports in the United States are located in TEXOARKLA. 15. We also manufacture cars down here, but we don't need to. You see, nothing rusts in TEXOARKLA so our vehicles stay beautiful and run well for decades. 16. We can finally build the wall between TEXOARKLA and Mexico and deport “Illegal Aliens” and say the hell with the EPA and build the lock and damn system in New Orleans that will keep the water out. This just names a few of the items that will keep the Republic of TEXOARKLA in good shape. There isn't a thing out there that we need and don't have. Now to the rest of you folks in the United States under President Obama: Since you won't have the refineries to get gas for your cars, only President Obama will be able to drive around in his big 9 mpg SUV. The rest of the United States will have to walk or ride bikes. You won't have any TV as the Space Center in Houston will cut off satellite communications. You won't have any natural gas to heat your homes, but since Al Gore has predicted global warming, you will not need the gas as l moreResolved Question: Please proofread my resume and cover letter?

Health Care in France is Often Held Up as a Model the U.S. Might Follow Yet the French Have Their Own Problems that Show There's No Such Thing as a Free Lunch — or a Free Doctor's Visit By INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY | Posted Wednesday, August 26, 2009 4:20 PM PT Call it the grass-is-greener syndrome. Advocates of national health care, acknowledging the flaws in ObamaCare yet despising the current U.S. system that has the best medicines, the best medical equipment and the shortest waiting lists, have turned their eyes lovingly to places like France. As City Journal contributing editor Guy Sorman notes, the French would also love to have the low-cost, high-service system some Americans gush about. Unfortunately, they don't. France's system isn't that cheap and is financed by high taxes on labor that have heavy economic consequences. Sorman notes that a Frenchman making a monthly salary of 3,000 euros has 350 of them deducted for health insurance. Then the employer throws in an additional 1,200 euros. This raises the cost of labor to prohibitive levels and puts a brake on economic growth. This helps explain why French unemployment hovers around 10%. France imposes an additional tax levy to cover the constant deficits that national health insurance runs. The French Parliament raises this levy, which applies to all forms of income, every year. Altogether, Sorman writes, "25% of French national income goes toward what's called Social Security, which includes health care and basic retirement pensions for all." Drugs developed in America at enormous expense do cost less in France, which decides what drugs are to be used and at what prices. American patients in effect subsidize the French, who take the same pills at half the price because American pharmaceutical companies don't want to lose the French market. French taxpayers fund a state health insurer, Assurance Maladie. Assurance Maladie has run in the red since 1989, and this year's shortfall is expected to be 9.4 billion euros ($13.5 billion) and 15 billion euros in 2010, about 10% of its budget. Regardless of the cost, does the French system produce better outcomes? Not always. Infant mortality rates are often cited as a reason socialized medicine and single-payer systems are better than what we have here. But according to Dr. Linda Halderman, a policy adviser in the California State Senate, these comparisons are bogus. Official World Health Organization statistics show the U.S. lagging behind France in infant mortality rates — 6.7 per 1,000 live births vs. 3.8 for France. Halderman notes that in the U.S., any infant born that shows any sign of life for any length of time is considered a live birth. In France — in fact, in most of the European Union — any baby born before 26 weeks' gestation is not considered alive and therefore doesn't "count" in reported infant mortality rates. France reimburses its doctors at a far lower rate than U.S. physicians would accept. As David Gratzer, a physician and senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, wrote in the summer 2007 issue of City Journal: "In France, the supply of doctors is so limited that during an August 2003 heat wave — when many doctors were on vacation and hospitals were stretched beyond capacity — 15,000 elderly citizens died." After the tragedy, the French parliament released a harshly worded report blaming the deaths on a complex health system, widespread failure among agencies and health services to coordinate efforts, and chronically insufficient care for the elderly. It's hard to imagine that happening here, where hospitals have enough air-conditioned beds and doctors that aren't on vacation. Fact is, most Americans like their health care. There are ways to provide expanded coverage at lower cost, such as pushing individually owned health savings accounts, malpractice reform and allowing insurance to be bought across state lines. We needn't be forced to sacrifice quality for cost. Nor do we need to look to the French for a better solution. They don't have one. http://www.ibdeditorials.com/IBDArticles.aspx?id=336178343967257 moreResolved Question: Honest nonpartisan question on healthcare reform...?
I know that there are several bills out there on healthcare, all of which have good points and bad points (from what I hear). I'm more of a foreign policy buff, but I figured I would start inching my way into the debate here. I downloaded and have been reading HR 3200, which is the bill that Fox News is out to kill (for whatever reason). So when I started reading it, I thought I would find some offensive stuff (I'm more of a financial conservative), but I have found nothing yet (it's like 1,000 pages, so I haven't read the whole thing yet) that has offended me or made me think for one minute that I wouldn't like the reforms brought about by this bill. Some key points I found in the bill itself (these are my notes): * Protects rights to keep currently held health insurance policies * Cannot discriminate based on pre-existing conditions * Limits the allowed methods of varying premiums * Prohibits discrimination in benefits * Requires parity in mental health and substance abuse disorder benefits * Ensures adequacy of provider networks * Mandates minimum coverage that includes hospitalization, outpatient hospital and clinic services (including ER visits), private practitioner services (regular doctor visits), supplies necessary for treatment, prescription drugs, rehab, mental health and substance abuse disorder services, preventive services, maternity care, well baby and well child care (oral, health, vision, and hearing services, equipment, and supplies for children under the age of 21) * Requires fair marketing practices by health insurers (uniform marketing standards) * Requires fair grievance and appeals mechanisms * Requires information transparency and accurate, timely plan disclosure using plain language * Mandates timely payment of claims by insurance companies * Creates a Health Insurance Exchange with Public Health Insurance option * Prohibits discrimination in healthcare not offered through exchange * Offers protections to whistleblowers * In order to ensure value and lower premiums, all group and individual coverage must meet a specified medical loss ratio * Ends health insurance rescission abuse, which prevents companies from abusing protections created to prevent fraud (companies unreasonably end coverage based on these protections) * Creates the opportunity for independent, external, third-party review in cases of rescission * Creates reinsurance program for retirees * Mandates affordability premium credits for individuals * “No federal payment for undocumented aliens.” * Notes that it is an individual’s responsibility to obtain healthcare * Outlines employer responsibilities should an employee choose to offer health insurance to its employees These are just a few of the more important points I have found thus far. From the figures I've heard, our government wastes more than $4 trillion on healthcare each year anyway, and that pretty much ANY new program would be less expensive (though a cost-neutral plan would be preferred to save taxpayer dollars). From what I've seen, any NEW bill would be better than the system we have now (though I don't think I would support universal healthcare and drastic changes to the health delivery system). Please give me YOUR OPINIONS on this issue, and please do not recite Fox News, MSNBC, or any other partisan hacks. If I want their opinions I could waste my time by watching their shows.Sorry about the wall of text, lol. hotnwell... Will definitely put something up if I find the death panels! lol ObamaCar... if you didn't notice the quotes... that is a direct quote from the bill... that's how i can say that.I see and hear everyday talk about death panels, socialized medicine, etc. attacks against Obama. The bill Obama supports and all the bills I've seen so far are not Universal Healthcare, so what is the socialization argument based on? It is sad that these scare tactics DO work on the American people, and it is even worse that you can easily view the bills yourself but everyone is too lazy. moreResolved Question: Who in this forum wants to read the TRUTH about the Obama health care plan?
The Obama Health Plan: Rationing, Higher Taxes, and Lower Quality Care. The study explains in full detail, based on the pending Congressional legislation, exactly how the Obama health plan would impose government rationing that will deny you health care, severely restrict your freedom of choice and control over your health care, raise, not lower, health costs, impose sharp tax increases that would leave America uncompetitive in the world economy, and increase federal spending, deficits and debt. The rationing begins with the dominant public option government health insurance plan, which is authorized in the legislation to follow the practices of Medicare and Medicaid in sharply underpaying doctors and hospitals. Medicare pays doctors 20% below market rates, and hospitals 30% below market. Medicaid pays 30% to 40% less than Medicare. This power to underpay medical bills is the most important reason the government public option health insurance plan will eventually drive out the private competitors, leaving you without the choice of keeping your current insurance plan. Any private plans that do manage to survive will be able to do so only by adopting the practice of paying only what the government plan pays. So the government will end up dictating all payments to health providers in any event. Doctors and hospitals will consequently begin to restrict their care to fit what the government will pay. Their practices will shrink to avoid the more expensive medical services and treatments that the government payments will not sufficiently cover. These underpayment practices in turn will have dramatic, powerful effects on investment in the health care industry. Investors are not going to finance acquisition of the latest, most advanced equipment and technologies with the government slashing compensation for the services such technologies provide. Investors are also not going to finance expanded or new hospital facilities or clinics, or even the full maintenance of existing ones. The supply of doctors, surgeons and specialists will also decline, just when demand for their services is soaring under the Obama health plan giveaways. Obama repeatedly says that under his health reform plan if you like your doctor you will be able to keep him or her. But the real question is whether under his reform plan your doctor will be willing to keep you, when the government refuses to pay adequately for the health care services you want and need. This is how the long waiting lines for diagnostics, surgery, and other referrals begin to develop. This is why in other countries with national health plans or socialized medicine, facilities seem old, aged, and deteriorated. Vast new realms of possible, innovative, new health services and care opened up by modern science will lag unutilized. Drug companies will also cut back sharply on investment in new, cutting edge, restorative, painsaving, or lifesaving miracle drugs. Many people will suffer or die unnecessarily as a result. A recent report from President Obama's Council of Economic Advisors (CEA)[1], which he has touted as showing how his health plan would reduce health costs, elaborates even more explicit and comprehensive government rationing of health care. The CEA report says 30% of American health care is waste, which government bureaucracy is going to eliminate under Obama's health reforms. What is the difference between waste and the health care you want? Answer: a government bureaucrat. The CEA says the government will reduce health costs by deciding for doctors and hospitals across the country what health care works and what doesn't. Even worse, it will decide what health care is cost effective, which means the government will decide whether your health care is worth the cost, not you and your doctor. This will be enforced through the payments to doctors and hospitals. Those who follow the government's dictates on your health care get paid, those that don't don't get paid. These are some of the reasons why the public is now protesting so angrily against the Obama health plan in public forums all over the country, and why the polls show the public has turned in decisive opposition to the Obama health plan. President Obama insists that if you like the health insurance you have today, you will be able to keep it. But under his health plan, if you have employer provided health insurance, that won't be your choice, it will be your employer's choice. Your employer will have every incentive to dump you into the so-called public option, government insurance plan, and pay an 8% payroll tax instead. If the employer's work force averages $50,000 a year in wages, then the employer would only have to pay $4,000 per year per worker under the payroll tax, which would likely be less than what he is paying for your current health coverage. moreMedical Equipment And Supplies Links
