Resolved Question: plz change the following text in your own words and finally please do the conclusion?

Please change on your own words.. General Information JVC Kenwood Holdings is a Japanese company based in Yokohama Japan. The company formed from the merger of Victor Company of Japan, Limited (JVC) and Kenwood Corporation (Kenwood) on October1, 2008. The company operates in five business segments. The car electronics segment manufactures and sells car audios, car audio and visual (AV) system, as well as car navigation system. The home& mobile electronics segment manufactures and sells video cameras, liquid crystal televisions, projectors, pure audios, stereo set and portable audios. The professional systems engaged in the manufacture and sale of business land mobile radio equipment, video surveillance equipment, commercial audio, video and display equipment. The entertainment segment is engaged in the plan, production and sale of music and video software, the manufacture of compact discs (CDs) and digital versatile discs (DVDs). The others segment is engaged in the manufacture and sale of radio frequency ID systems, weather satellite data reception systems, other electronic devices, etc. The company has 134 subsidiaries and 11 associated companies. Integration purpose Through the management integration JVC Kenwood expanding the scope of previous cooperative efforts, which were limited to such aspects of operations as development production and procurement in common business segments car electronics and home audio, to other existing business segments and facilitate expansion into new domains in addition to reinforcing such business activities as marketing and sales. As for common businesses, the companies focusing the car electronics business into a strong profit center and increase the profitability of the Home Audio business by expanding the role of J&K Technologies to general procurement and manufacturing and ultimately, position the company as an operating company standing shoulder to shoulder with JVC and Kenwood. Through such policy, both companies will maximize synergy and enhance unified global corporate value while creating new corporate value. Both companies striving to establish solid positions as world-leading manufacturers specializing in AV products. Overview of the fiscal year The global economy in the fiscal year under review continued to be stagnant, affected by the economic crisis that was sparked by the financial turmoil originating in the US. However, signs of recovery have become apparent in some industries as a result of aggressive economic measures taken by governments in a number of countries and economic growth in emerging countries. Under such circumstances, operating results of the JVC Kenwood Group started recovering in the second quarter, after bottoming out in the first quarter. This was a result of efforts such as structural reforms that were implemented in the previous fiscal year and effect of the merger. The Group posted an operating profit in the fourth quarter for the first time since the third quarter of the previous fiscal year, posting a record profit after the management integration. Net Sales Net sales for the fiscal year under review were 398,663 million yen. This reflects the curtailment of the display segment in Europe and the slow recovery in sales in the camcorder segment of the Home&Mobile Electronics business as well as a delay in recovery of order-receiving in the Professional Systems business and shortage of hit movies and music in the Entertainment business. However, the Car Electronics business started recovering in the second quarter. Net sales for the fourth quarter stood at 93,237 million yen, down only about 11.4 billion yen (10.9%) from a year earlier since the sales increase in the Car Electronics business partially made up for the sales decrease in the Home&Mobile Electronics business. Compared with the third quarter of the fiscal year net sales decreased only by about 8.9 billion yen (8.7%) partly thanks to a sales recovery in the Professional Systems business. more

Resolved Question: what would you do if you were a judge to this case?

Elizabeth Covington has brought Michael Ferrell to court. Elizabeth Covington is seeking to get her card back from Michael Ferrell or in the alternative Elizabeth wants to recover the true value of the card ($80,000?) You are Judge Wapner and you are presented with the following evidence. They say that “all good things must come to an end,” and for Elizabeth Covington, the saying had unfortunately come true. After a brief illness, Elizabeth’s husband Forrest had died at the age of sixty-eight. The couple had been happily married for forty-two years, and now Elizabeth was left with only her memories, and with the material belongings her husband had left behind. Her husband’s funeral now complete, Elizabeth was faced with the responsibility of administering her husband’s estate. As required by state law, she had only one year to “wrap up” the financial affairs of her husband’s estate through the process of probate. The “clock was ticking” on the probate time limit, and Elizabeth knew that she must somehow “press on.” As the sole heir of her husband’s estate (Forrest had named his wife as the only beneficiary of his will,) all proceeds and property from the estate would pass to Elizabeth. That was little consolation to Elizabeth, as she would, if she somehow had the opportunity; trade all of her worldly possessions for another day with her life and soul mate. Some time ago, Elizabeth had read that one of the best way’s to cope with the loss of a deceased spouse was to rid the house of the personal belongings of the lost loved one. Along those lines, she decided to have an estate sale. Elizabeth’s daughter Samantha agreed to help with the sale, with the stipulation that all of the proceeds of the sale would be used for the benefit of her mother. Samantha knew that with her mother now approaching retirement alone (Elizabeth was sixty-five years old,) she would need all of the financial support she could muster. The date for the estate sale had arrived. All of Forrest’s personal belongings had been arranged neatly in the garage. Throughout his life, Forrest had been an avid baseball fan and collector of baseball cards; although it had been his hobby, Elizabeth had not shared in his love for baseball or card collecting, so she therefore knew very little about the cards. Samantha did not know the difference between a “home run” and a “touchdown.” Forrest’s entire baseball card collection was displayed in the garage with his other worldly possessions, waiting for buyers. Michael Ferrell, an eighteen-year-old who lived in the neighborhood, decided to attend the Covington estate sale. He arrived early that morning, before all other prospective customers, with a twenty-dollar, self-imposed spending limit. What first caught Michael’s attention was Forrest’s baseball card collection; more specifically, what appeared to be a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie baseball card in near-mint to mint condition. On the outside of the box containing the cards was a sticker indicating “All Cards $1 Each.” Michael could not believe his eyes. He meandered for several minutes through Forrest’s old dress shirts, golf clubs and electronic equipment, with butterflies in his stomach and with the Mantle baseball card in his hand. Michael debated with himself about whether he should disclose the real value of this treasure to Mrs. Covington (he had heard that a similar Mantle card had sold in 2006 for over $72,000!); remembering something about “discretion being the better part of valor,” however, Michael paid Elizabeth the $1, left the estate sale, and returned home with his treasure. Later that month, Elizabeth was in her living room watching her favorite public television show, “Antiques Circus.” To her surprise, her young neighbor Michael was on the show, asking an antiques expert to estimate the value of the 1952 Mantle card. The expert, well-trained in the art and science of baseball card collecting, said that even in a tough economy, the card would likely bring $80,000 at public auction. Elizabeth was heartbroken; not only had she sold her husband’s personal belongings (which she had come to regret,) but she knew that this one card could have “paved the way” for a more financially secure retirement. If only she had known… who do you think should win this case and why? more

Resolved Question: Is war profiteering and use of captive/slave labour not considered a crime in the US?

PRISON INMATES HELP IN WAR EFFORT The United States House of Representative Mar 14, 2007 Section 54 http://www.govtrack.us/congress/record.xpd?id=110-h20070314-54 Human rights organizations, as well as political and social ones, are condemning what they are calling a new form of inhumane exploitation in the United States, where they say a prison population of up to 2 million - mostly Black and Hispanic - are working for various industries for a pittance. For the tycoons who have invested in the prison industry, it has been like finding a pot of gold. They don't have to worry about strikes or paying unemployment insurance, vacations or comp time. All of their workers are full-time, and never arrive late or are absent because of family problems; moreover, if they don't like the pay of 25 cents an hour and refuse to work, they are locked up in isolation cells. http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=va&aid=8289 There are presently 80,000 inmates in the US employed in commercial activity, some earning as little as 21 cents an hour. The US government program Federal Prison Industries (FPI) currently employs 21,000 inmates, an increase of 14 percent in the last two years alone. FPI inmates make a wide variety of products—such as clothing, file cabinets, electronic equipment and military helmets—which are sold to federal agencies and private companies. FPI sales are $600 million annually and rising, with over $37 million in profits. In addition, during the last 20 years more than 30 states have passed laws permitting the use of convict labor by commercial enterprises. These programs now exist in 36 states. http://www.wsws.org/articles/2000/may2000/pris-m08.shtmlWho has the largest prison population on the globe? Not China not Russia --- no it is the US of A And who supports the arms industry ? Prisoners paid 25 to 41 cents per hour Cheap slave labour --- producing goods for war and making huge profits while doing it -- the definition of slave labour war crime and war profiteering Are these things not considered illegal or unethical in the "Christian" nation of the US or is this one of those times Jesus should just but out and stay out of government? In the US ........ is slave labour legal ? Is war profiteering ? Or is the tradition of letting war profiteers such as Prescott Bush go free and rewarded by status and money more the norm for the "values" of the "Christian" US ? more

Resolved Question: Renting townhouse. Over 8 months left on lease. TH now to be put for sale. What are my rights?

Wonderful LL up to now. She would like really like to sell the townhouse we rent to us on "For sale by owner" basis to forego realtor fees. However, we know we will only be in this area another 24-30 months and are not sure buying something is smart choice. What are my rights as the tenant in this regard? 1) Can she MAKE us move out before the lease expires? (This is our 2nd year leasing. At the end of 1st year, was supposed to go month-to-month, but she insisted on another year lease, which I signed.) 2) What are our rights insofar as people traipsing in and out to look at it if on the market while we occupy? We have a Persian cat, and I have valuable electronic equipment as I have an at-home business. How much notice is required, and can I require that I be present whenever shown? Nothing is stated in our lease regarding this contingency. She was just out here a month ago with someone to see about making an improvement to the deck, so this sudden decision to sell it is really out of left field. She has been a fantastic landlord, but then again we have been fantastic tenants, rent auto-deposited into her account on the 1st of every single month, uber-clean maintenance of unit. more

Resolved Question: Going travelling for 10 months. Some help on finding a good bag!?

Hello, I am going travelling for about 10 months and need a good bag. I am looking for something quite large (about 80 litres). I am taking some electronic equipment so something waterproof would be good. A detachable rucksack may also be useful as I am taking a laptop and it would be good to have a bag that I can take onboard an aircraft while checking the main bag in. http://www.thenorthface.com/catalog/sc-gear/primero-85.html I have been looking at this however I cannot find it for sale anywhere in the UK. If someone knows where I can buy it please let me know. If not what alternative bags do you recommend? Thanks. more

Voting Question: Whats a good song to play in the background of my podcast for school?

for school we are doing Podcasts on controversial topics, and we have to include statistics. I did mine on video game violence. and I want to put a song in the background of my podcast but I don't know what song. Heres my script (as in this is what I'm going to say.) I'm having another person help me say the stuff. where it says Chenay (thats me) and where it says other, thats the other person thats going to help me. I know its kind of alot to read but it would really help me alot. And could you tell me if you can tell weather i'm for or against violence in video games. (my teacher says that the listener should be able to tell waether you agree or dissagree with your topic without comming right out and saying it) So, my script: Chenay: In the past 30 years video games have had a major effect on how people spend their free time. Chenay: Did you know that 70 of the top video games, 90% of them contained violence? Other: 74% of families with school age children own video game equipment. Chenay: More than 70% of teens have played the violent video game Grand Theft Auto. Other: Which is rated ‘M’ for mature. Chenay: In 1999, two boys launched an assault on Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, murdering 13 and wounding 23 before turning the guns on themselves. No one knows exactly why they did this, but we do know that they both enjoyed playing a violent video game called Doom. Other: About 40% of those that play mature rated games are under the age of 18. Chenay: 78% of unaccompanied children, ages 13-16 were able to buy mature rated games at retail stores. Other: Children are leaving traditional toys and play at younger and younger ages in favor of electronic entertainment. Chenay: Toy sales were slow in 2001. And video game sales were up 43%. Other: Boys ages 8-18 play at LEAST 40 minutes of video games a day. Chenay: 78% of all violent video games, within the first 10 minutes of play involve lethal violence. Other: 78% of that violence was shown up close. Chenay: 60% of games rated ‘E’ for everyone required the player to injure characters before they could continue playing. Other: 90% of teenagers say that their parents don’t check the rating on the video game before they buy it. Chenay: A child witnesses over 10,000 acts of violence on television before she enters school. Other: So far no one can actually prove that playing violent video games lead to a crime that was committed, but many believe so. Chenay: You can’t judge a video game by its cover. Neither, can you judge how much violence it contains based on its rating. So thanks soo much. more

Resolved Question: does anyone find the casio cash register manuals easy to use?

I earlier helped a person "try" to program a casio pcr t2000 cash register and found the manual the "WORST" manual I have ever used for any piece of electronic equipment I have dealt with... ! Now I have recently purchased for myself a casio pcr 260 cash register and find these manuals the norm for Casio. Maybe they do this intentionally so people will call and pay $20 for their telephone help? Why dont they just write a simple manual or in these modern times make a computer program (maybe for sale $20 ?) that can guide people thru the setup ? Anyone know where to go to get help programming Casio cash register other than paying $20 to ask them a question ? Thanks more

Resolved Question: Is there An Open Source Web Platform for Setting Up Exchanges or Marketplaces?

I'm interested in setting up a marketplace or exchange for wall and car chargers for electronic equipment. I would like users to be able to post chargers that they have for sale. I would like users to be able to specify certain particulars about the chargers, for instance whether the chargers can switch between 110 and 220 volts, whether the output is AC or DC, how many volts and amps output, the size and shape of the plug, whether the plug is negative or positive on the inside and outside contacts, who makes the charger, etc. Is there an open source platform for setting up such a thing? more

Resolved Question: Does your state have a Use Tax?

I just heard about this, and apparently it's been in effect since 1999. All purchases made outside of the state for common use in the state are taxable if a sales tax wasn't applied at the time of purchase. This includes electronic, clothes, music, movies, books, cars, etc. I build computers for people. I purchased all the parts through a site that doesn't charge a sales tax. Thousands of dollars in equipment that I purchased. Do I claim that I did or just play dumb? I didn't keep the computers, just built for clients for a fee, but the purchases were made by me. more

Resolved Question: Do vehicles sold and driven in Germany have more power output (horsepower, etc) than the ones sold in the USA?

Do vehicles sold and driven in Germany have more power output (horsepower, etc) than the ones sold in the USA? I purchased a 2008 Volkswagen Rabbit. Its a 5-cylinder that puts out 180 horsepower --I purchased it in PA, USA. One of the sales representatives told me that he knew of an auto shop that had equipment that would trick the Rabbit's computer into returning to German specification and increasing the horsepower to about 291! Cost would be $500. I've heard rumors of such equipment and other product (electronic chip, etc). However I got wierd feeling that the only thing that would be 'tricked' would be me, not the Rabbit's computer. This vehicle is great but sometimes it feels heavy and with more power potential (that is not being used). Heck, its a compact car with five cylinders! Yet it goes 0-60 in 8-seconds. I think this car can do more. Anyone have knowledge about such equipment changing the output HP of a vehicle? Would such a thing mess-up the vehicle (electrical, etc). I presume it voids the manufacturer's warranty. Is it true that German vehicles sold and driven there are more powerful that the ones sold and driven in the USA? If so, any website that compares the specification? more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my personal statement?

PERSONAL STATEMENT – DRAFT NOTES I have always had a natural flair for computers and this has become clearer to me over the past three years in full-time employment. I find that the IT skills that I use everyday as a legal secretary such as touch-typing and using specialist legal and accounts software have always come more naturally and easily to me, without any training, than others in my sector. I have always had a very logical and analytical mind. This is demonstrated by my consistently high grades, specifically in the areas of Electronics (at GSCE level), Physics and Maths (at A level). I am a very fast learner and have always been able to pick up new concepts and methods with ease. I have always thought of myself as quite creative as well - at school I excelled at art and design and with my electronic products project I was a finalist for the Welsh Young Innovator of the Year Award in 2001. I have also gained invaluable skills in employment in the last few years. I become a lot more organised when I worked as a Production Planner for a manufacturer and distributor of fibre optic telecoms equipment as I had many responsibilities, they included planning jobs into production and liaising with the sales team, checking stock levels, purchasing components necessary for jobs, chairing the daily production meetings and organising the despatches and couriers. From October 2006 I have worked as a legal secretary. My IT and organisational skills have enabled me to excel at this. I am extremely efficient and have worked consistently hard to improve my own efficiency and implemented new templates and spreadsheets. I have also found my good internet research skills to be extremely useful. I always endeavour to improve myself and whilst working as a legal secretary I have completed a Legal Secretaries Diploma course at home and gained a ‘Highly Commended’ certificate. As well as the skills I have gained the time I have spent in full-time employment has also given me far more focus and determination to succeed than I had five years ago. Supporting myself has also made me a lot more responsible and mature. I therefore feel that I have both the intellectual and personal skills to be able to successfully study for a degree in Computer Science at Bangor. The course appeals to me because of the wide range of interesting subject areas, the chance to combine theoretical study with hands on projects and the specific and technical skills which I will gain and I know are much sought-after in the workplace. ____ Any helpful comments/suggestions or constructive critisism would be much appreciated. Many thanks xThanks so much for your help guys, I'll get to work implementing all your suggestions :) NB. I realise touch-typing sounds lame as an IT skill but it was mentioned as a useful skill to have on the course website so thought I may as well stick it in there more

This information is taken from their annual reports. An annual report is a summary of a company’s financial results for the year along with its current financial condition and future plans. This report is directed to external users of financial information, but it also affects the actions and decisions of internal users. A company uses an annual report to showcase itself and its products. Many annual reports include attractive photos, diagrams, and illustrations related to the company. The primary objective of annual reports, however, is the financial section, which communicates much information about a company, with most data drawn from the accounting information system. The layout of an annual report’s financial section is fairly established and typically includes the following: Letter to Shareholders Financial History and Highlights Management Discussion and Analysis Management’s Report Report of Independent Accountants (Auditor’s Report) Financial Statements Notes to Financial Statements List of Directors and Officers This appendix provides the financial statements for Krispy Kreme (plus selected notes), Tastykake, and Harley-Davidson. The appendix is organized as follows: Krispy Kreme A-2 through A-17 Tastykake A-18 through A-24 Harley-Davidson A-25 through A-30 Many assignments at the end of each chapter refer to information in this appendix. We encourage readers to spend time with these assignments; they are especially useful in showing the relevance and diversity of financial accounting and reporting. Special note: The SEC maintains the EDGAR (Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis, and Retrieval) database at www.SEC.gov. The Form 10-K is the annual report form for most companies. It provides electronically accessible information. The Form 10-KSB is the annual report form filed by “small businesses.” It requires slightly less information than the Form 10-K. One of these forms must be filed within 90 days after the company’s fiscal year-end. Resolved Question: Does a commission only job sound like a scam?

This is the email I received after sending my resume and scheduling a phone interview: "Good Morning- I am emailing you in response to your resume that you submitted to us for employment...I have narrowed my selection and found your resume to be most impressive. The position available is for an outside sales representative that simply attends our pre-set appointments to deliver a short sales presentation, make the sale, and simply move on to the next pre-scheduled appointment. There will be no cold calling, no prospecting, no follow up, no maintenance, and no installation of our equipment required on your behalf. Resolved Question: Can one proof read this essay?

Everyday tons of hazardous electronic waste is dumped in China and other developing countries. These wastes come from various items that we use in our everyday life; some include batteries, kitchen appliances, used computer equipment, and other worn out electronic devices. These items contain chemicals, heavy metals, dangerous pathogens, and other toxins. Many places like the U.S. or the UK have not officially banned exportation of these electronic items, and countries like China still do not enforce their rules of banning e-waste importation. China allows a city like Guiyu to collect, dissemble, and produce toxic e-waste because they are a developing country who needs the money that they receive by taking in this e-waste. Since recent booms in sales of electronic items more of this e-waste is being made, which makes it hard to enforce exportation of it; because of the rate that e-waste is filling into landfills also makes it harder to discard of it. (“Toxic Waste”) In the city of Guiyu an environmental problem has spiraled out of control, citizens are being allowed to dismantle electronic waste (most imported) in their homes and near by workshops. In China recycling e-waste is not taken as a threat to the environment or health and safety regulations. Even though the Chinese law prohibits the importation of e-waste and Beijing is part of the Basle Agreement, (an international treaty that is banning the shipment of e-waste from developed countries to developing countries), they still import e-waste. Only in Guiyu are officials allowing this importation of e-waste, because it provides the cities residents with income; and so far China has not put a stop to it, because they are so hungry for all sorts of metals and the money that they earn for taking the metals and electronic items. (“In The ‘Toxic City of Guiyu, Children Play Among The Waste”) Developed countries like the U.S. (which did not sign the Basle Agreement) could keep their e-waste and properly dispose of it, but the cost of doing so does not outweigh environmental and health problems that are appearing in developing countries like China. (“In The ‘Toxic City of Guiyu, Children Play Among The Waste”) Even though the U.S. has tried to put a stop to the exportation of e-waste, corporate businesses argue to congress that environment and health problems are not a big deal, and the government is being too strict. Plus the government would be taking away from earnings that they receive every year. Communities and environmentalists are still complaining about law enforcement of regulations of hazardous e-waste. (“Toxic Waste”) The impact that e-waste is having on the wellbeing of the people in Guiyu is disastrous, and much of this could be stopped with a few e-waste regulations. “Computer carcasses line the streets, awaiting dismemberment. Circuit boards and hard drives lie in huge mounds. At thousands of workshops, laborers shred and grind plastic casings into particles, snip cables and pry chips from circuit boards. Workers pass the boards through red-hot kilns or acid baths to dissolve lead, silver and other metals from the digital detritus.” (“Chinese City Is World’s Digital Scrap Heap”) In Guiyu, workers are dismembering various electronic items. Most of them are equipped with only small hand tools; which they use to take apart old computers, monitors, printers, DVD players, telephones, MP3 players, and other electronic objects. Several of these items come from brand named companies (like HP, LG, Apple, and Compaq) who say they recycle their products. Workers that are unaware of these toxins tear apart each piece of electronic items to its smallest components, and melt the items in open fires to extract metals. Others take the remaining pieces of scrap metals and dump them in water ways. (“Toxic Tea Party”) All of this e-waste has an effect on the environment in Guiyu. “Water sources are black and pungent and choked with industrial waste, says Kevin Brigden. Brigden (Greenpeace Research Laboratories) tested streams in Guiyu and found out that acid was leaking into them. The streams had soaring levels of toxic heavy metals, which were powerful enough to disintegrate a penny in a few hours.” (Toxic Tea Party”) In Guiyu the price of water is ten times more than in other surrounding places. Water is usually brought to the people of the city by truck, because the streams are so heavily polluted that it turns a dark black color in seconds. (“Toxic Tea Party”) Local bosses pay little regard to workers’ health or regulations that prohibit dumping acid baths into rivers. The e-waste has had a negative effect on the health of the people that live around it. This e-waste can harm humans and animals if they encounter these toxins. Some toxins persist in the environment and accumulate; humans or animals often absorb them. Organizations say that dangerous levels of the metals found in Guiyu have negative effects on children. (“Toxic Waste”) A group found "Over 10 poisonous metals, such as lead, mercury and cadmium, in Guiyu” said Lai Yun, a campaigner. (“Chinese City Is World’s Digital Scrap Heap”) “Professor Hun Xia (Shantou University Medical College) tested 165 children for concentrations of lead in their blood. Eighty two percent of Guiyu children had blood/ lead levels of more than 100. Anything above that figure is considered unsafe by health experts. The average reading for these children was 149” (“Toxic Tea Party”) These high levels of lead in adults and children can lead to lower IQ’s and the development of the central nervous system. It also can cause headaches, nausea, miscarriages, and skin damage. Many of these symptoms that these people are having have not been treated properly, and the peasants do not understand what damage e-waste does to them. Clearly people suffer but that does not mean that they get paid good wages, on average workers earn about 200 to 300 yuan (US$ 24-US$36) per month in Guiyu. (“Toxic Tea Party”) Some 60,000 laborers toil in Guiyu for e-waste recycling, even as the work imperils their health. “About 2.3 million PCs, 2.7 millions computer displays and 1.35 million printers were dumped in 2002.” (“In The ‘Toxic City’ Of Guiyu, Children Play Among The Waste”) Environmentalists say in Guiyu alone, one million tons of e-waste has been treated each year. Despite all the toxins that come from e-waste, its business provides Guiyu’s locals with a more profitable living. Many residents have had better opportunities since they started recycling e-waste. City officials are proud of the e-waste industry but sensitive about its reputation as a dirty business that feeds off smuggled waste and abuses labor rights. Visitors quickly find themselves detained by the local police officers, and their video or digital photographs erased. (“Toxic Tea Party”) In Guiyu most discarded computers and electronic devices from all over the world often end up there, this may be why it’s the e-waste capital of the world. Some developed countries have banned exportation of e-waste, but even if e-waste exports stopped Guiyu recycling would not stop; because China is generating more of its own e-waste. While we may consider the environmental and health problems that e-waste poses for people there, citizens in Guiyu do no think this way; because doing this work is their way of life. Conditions in Guiyu have changed little despite the efforts of the central government to crack down and enforce the long-standing e-waste import ban. The developed countries need to stop exporting e-waste to poorer developing countries; and the U.S. needs to reduce the toxicity and amount of e-waste that is being dumped there every year. Resolved Question: Feeling Pinch, Stores Woo Lagging Shoppers. Evaluate Article?

Lackluster sales in this holiday season have retailers scrambling to wring a few last dollars from procrastinators by slashing prices, extending hours and wooing customers more persistently than last year. The moves show that retailers' strategy during this final weekend before Christmas -- when about 10% of holiday sales are expected to take place -- has become increasingly reliant on the same promotions and marathon hours once unique to the "Black Friday" weekend following Thanksgiving. But the discounts also reveal the pinch stores are in this year as the credit crunch, rising gas prices and winter storms have taken a toll on companies dependent on end-of-year sales. The tough economy has left aisles more empty this year. Total foot traffic at U.S. retail outlets took an 8.9% dive during the second full week of December, compared with the same period last year, according to an estimate from ShopperTrak RCT Corp., which bases its numbers on a formula that involves an electronic count of shoppers in malls and other retail outlets nationwide. A bright spot, however, has been online, where aggressive discounting and cut-rate deals on fast shipping have contributed to a surge in spending. From Nov. 1 to Dec. 16, online shoppers spent $23.5 billion, 19% higher than the corresponding days last year, according to comScore Inc., a Reston, Va., market research firm that tracks Web spending and traffic. Videogames, consoles and accessories are the fastest-growing category, more than doubling from the comparable period last year. Furniture, appliances and equipment ranks second, up 63%, while event tickets and consumer electronics are up 29% and 24%, respectively. Now, a final push is on, both online and in stores. Web retailers continued to hunt for business by cutting shipping charges to seal deals before the pre-Christmas shipping window closes. Shoebuy.com, a Boston-based unit of IAC/InterActive Corp. offered free express shipping until today. Online handbag merchant eBags upgraded purchases made by Wednesday from standard shipping to two-day air-shipping through UPS for no extra cost. Brick-and-mortar stores, meanwhile, retooled their hours for the weekend, hoping to spark their own shopping flurry. J.C. Penney Co. stores are staying open until midnight tonight and Saturday. Select Macy's Inc. stores on the East Coast will stay open nonstop throughout the weekend -- 107 hours straight for one branch in Queens. And New York-based FAO Schwarz made discounts of 25% to 50% on certain toys. Ed Schmults, the chief executive officer at FAO Schwarz, said that while foot traffic was up, business had not been as booming throughout the season as he hoped. The National Retail Federation, a trade group, is predicting just 4% in sales growth for 2007, the smallest growth rate in five years. Britt Beemer, chairman of America's Research Group, paints an even grimmer picture: He lowered his forecast of 2% retail sales growth to 1.8%, his lowest forecast in nearly 10 years. In the apparel category, men's clothing has showed modest single-digit growth through the first 20 days of the shopping season, according to MasterCard Spending Pulse, a unit of MasterCard Advisors, which tracks spending of all types. But women's apparel -- which last year constituted three times the sales of men's -- has been a major disappointment, as shoppers have avoided big purchases. Sales were down 5.7% from the same time last year. Retailers have responded with a flurry of price cuts, but large inventory remains in some stores. One of Gap Inc.'s Old Navy stores in downtown Chicago on Wednesday had piles of festive sweaters marked down to $20 from $36.50. Women's coats still stuffed the racks, despite being already marked down 50%, and its signature "performance fleece," also half off, was stacked eight shelves high. The bad tidings for apparel have left some retailers looking for other items to push. At Banana Republic, also owned by Gap, $64 gift sets of its perfumes, body creams and shower creams were marked down 30%. Gold-boxed gift sets of a new line of bath products at Ann Taylor Stores Corp. stores were discounted to $19.50 from $29. At Limited Brands Inc.'s Victoria's Secret, stores were piled with beauty gift sets, many 40% off. Meanwhile luxury goods are expected to have a good season this year, and retail consultant Frederick Crawford of AlixPartners predicts "pockets of good news" for high-end retail. For brands like Prada and Gucci, he expects to see 5% to 7% growth. According to retail surveys, electronics sales were down 0.5% in the three-week period between Nov. 18 and Dec. 9 compared to a year ago, according to Stephen Baker, vice president of industry analysis for market watcher NPD Group. He said consumers in recent years have been delaying purchases until closer to Christmas, which may account for the slowdown. Indeed, Angela Smith has waited until the last week to make her purchases. A 39-year-old bank employee in Dallas, Ms. Smith said she is waiting for prices to drop further as well as trying to spend less. For her three nephews, ages 12, 8 and 7, she plans to buy remote-controlled cars, which Wal-Mart Stores Inc. initially priced at $59 and has since dropped to $49. "I am going to swing by this weekend and see if they are going to take it down one more time," says Ms. Smith, who was shopping for a co-worker's present at her local Wal-Mart midweek. Home-furnishings retailers, fighting the weak housing market, are being particularly aggressive with their promotions this year. At Williams-Sonoma Inc.'s Pottery Barn store on Chicago's Michigan Avenue, Christmas-tree-shaped candles were discounted 50%, and holiday garlands of fake evergreen branches were 30% off. Wrapped gifts such as silver jewelry boxes, also marked down 30%, were stacked high Wednesday afternoon. Home-improvement outfits like Lowe's Cos. Inc. and Home Depot Inc. are destined to be hardest hit, says AlixPartners' Mr. Crawford. "Consumers are absolutely showing us that they will be delaying discretionary purchases" like gear to remodel a kitchen, he said. A boom-bust pattern is typical after Thanksgiving's Black Friday discounts, which encourages a flurry of purchases early but leads to a tapering off in early December, killing shopping momentum. This year the pattern was more pronounced: A double-digit sales surge on Black Friday exceeded retailers' expectations; but come December, throngs of shoppers didn't return. There was one exception, however: online retail. Web merchants have discounted and promoted heavily this season, say industry analysts. Shipping promotions have been particularly popular. Sixty-eight percent of surveyed Web retailers said they are offering express shipping promotions this year, up from 49% last year, according to Scott Silverman, executive director of Shop.org, an online retail trade group and unit of National Retail Federation. As the boom continues, these companies are becoming increasingly creative to draw customers. This year Ice.com, a Montreal-based Internet jeweler, has rolled out new videos to promote products and free overnight shipping. It has experimented with new marketing tricks such as buying front-page ads on Microsoft Corp.'s MSN and Yahoo Inc.'s Web sites this week. Ice.com even tried to tap influencers to drive word-of-mouth among blogs, magazine mentions and celebrities. more

Resolved Question: ID requested when purchasing canned air?

Went to Office Max today to buy canned air to use to blow dust off electronic equipment. Upon taking it to counter the sales person requested ID. Thought maybe it was an age issue, but neither my spouse or I look under age whatsoever. It's obvious we're much older than 18 or even 21. My spouse asked why ID was being requested. Salesperson seemed to stumble, mumble and gave some lame answer that didn't make any sense. Spouse quickly flashed driver's license and said "That's all you're going to see." Is there now a law about these products and salespeople have to request ID no matter what? Seemed strange as we've never been asked for ID when purchasing this item in the past. more
