Voting Question: help with wedding photography?

i'm a beginner at photography and my aunt has asked me to photograph her wedding, just because she doesnt care if she has fancy pictures or anything, she would probably not mind it if her pctures were taken with a disposable camera haha but she wanted to let me practice my photography. so, i found this lens that is supposedly perfect for portrait pictures, its called the Nikon 135mm f/2 DC, and it blurs the background nicely and makes the subject very sharp and all that, but its like $1300, does anyone have any suggestions for a cheaper lens that will do similar things as this lens? and also, any other suggestions for equipment or lenses i could use while photographing the wedding? thank youuuthank you for the suggestions but i want to make it clear that shes not expecting much, its her second marriage and she doesnt care much about hardcore wedding pictures, she just wants to give me a chance to practice. but thanks againi'm using a Nikon D3000 and i already have a 18-55mm lens that it came with more

Resolved Question: Why do people keep saying that their DVD players freeze up?

I don't get it. I'm not that experienced with DVD players, having owned only one which I got used almost three years ago but which is about four years old. It's a generic brand -- CyberHome -- and not one of the main brands. But as I peruse reviews for newer players, even from known brands such as Toshiba, I find people complaining that the players stopped working after six months or a year. I even found reviews for the model I have which claimed that it broke very quickly. What are these people doing wrong that their device should stop working and why hasn't mine broken? Are DVD players really disposable electronic equipment or do some people misuse their players, causing breakage? The only problems I've ever had with mine are the screen turning red and funny when I stop it (and this has only happened about four or five times and is remedied by turning it off and back on) and when I try to play something that has gunk or a smudge on it. What's the deal? more

Resolved Question: A hobby for a teen that I could start with nothing and end up highly successful?

READ BEFORE ANSWERING Okay, so I'm 16 years old and for some strange reason I really like to find something I know nothing about, and start with nothing, and see how far I can get doing just that. It's almost like a game to me, although it's fun and productive and increases your skills in many areas. For example, one that I could try that I haven't could be photography. This is how it'd be done: Start with nothing. Maybe a cheap disposable camera. Take some pictures, try to sell them or something. With that money buy a better camera; maybe a book on photography. Work my way up in life... I've always liked doing things like that, and really, it could be done with almost anything -- plus it's a great way to be a real renaissance man and build up interesting skills and see what you're good at. So, I'm asking for suggestions. Maybe some of your own hobbies and a way to relate it to this. It's important to be able to work-my-way up, and get better equipment with whatever it is that I do. Other examples could be things like writing (trying to get this published in more and more esteemed places), hunting or fishing (and selling what I catch for better guns/bows/poles), sports (training and getting better equipment -- this is really just an example, not something I'll do since I personally am not a good enough athlete to the level of making money). Well, that's just a examples, see what you can come up with. Think hard; I appreciate it :)1 - I am staying in school, and hope to be a doctor one day. I'm not dropping out for a hobby. 2 - Try to elaborate people. I'm looking for a way to make money so I can actually progress with it instead of just kill time and get nothing done. It's just fun for me. So please, elaborate :)For example: Ok, stamps, trading cards, website -- I don't know how to make money off of stamps or trading cards besides buying and selling them; and I'm not looking to be an eBay merchant here. Geocaching sounds VERY interesting and along the lines of what I was looking for. Thank you :)DownUnderChick, thanks a lot. That's the kind of answer I was looking for. Unfortunately I'm not very artistically talented and music's not really my strong point either. Although maybe at once point I'll try it. The yard-working thing was a good idea (the only downside is it's apparently illegal to go door to door trying to make money working for people -- I used to do it when I was little until I got in trouble). But I really appreciate the thoughtful answer and photography advice :) more

Resolved Question: I want to learn how to box/kickbox or do muay thai at home?

I want to learn how to box at home. I haven't got any equipment and there isn't a chance of me joining a boxing or kickboxing class. I live in an apartment so I can't practice in my back yard. I know the basic footwork and the jab and right punch. I know the stance and whatnot. But I havent gotten anything. The only kind of gloves I have are MMA hand gloves. Because I want to learn to box to incorperate that with MMA. Are there any home equipments I can use to make myself some boxing training equipment? If I need handwrap there's a music and sports store around the corner that sells lots of everlast handwrap. I believe it's the yellow practice ones so they arent disposable and can be used over and over. more

Resolved Question: What tattoo machine brand would be recommended?

I'm just starting tattooing and would like to buy all my equipments separately rather than from a tattooing kit. Something that really concerns me is how well a tattoo machine can cut. I was wondering if anyone knows of a good brand that's durable/powerful/not too expensive(around $150 price range). Also any recommendations/advice on the model type as well as disposable tubes and needles. I'll mostly be doing oriental/black and grey tats. more

Resolved Question: Questions for Anarchists?

I understand why people are Anarchists. How does Anarchism work? If we were an anarchist nation would we be like a bunch of homeless crust punks? (Not there is anything wrong with that), But would I have a place to live Can I have hot water? Would we have the Internet? How would we build and maintain Roads and houses? I'm not very materialistic but would I have disposable income? Would we have companies that make Stereos, Sound Systems, Recording equipment and other quite expensive technology? Would we have socialised health care and education? That's just a bunch of random ass questions. I'm new to this so forgive me lolz. Plus what are some good books that can explain Anarchism, Im halfway through Chomsky on Anarchism. Anyway Cheers. more

Voting Question: Where do you report unsanitary hospitals or clinics?

Just last week I interviewed for a medical assistant position, and was allowed to shadow some of their current employees. While there I witnessed completely unsanitary healthcare facilities. This facility provides diagnostic testing to individuals desiring to attain federal healthcare and assistance. The population served was typically individuals that had no permanent residence (homeless) and other minorities. Testing occurred in rooms that were maybe 5ft. by 7ft. and was full of papers and charts scattered around. All testing equipment was not properly washed! When I asked why they did not use disposable mouthpieces (for pulmonary function tests) they got extremely offensive. Immunization and syringes were not properly handled (not in sterile environments), and were mass-filled and then "labelled" with post-it notes. If that wasn't enough, patients had to wait an average of 3 hours past their appointment time. Who can I report them to so that they get closed down or increase their hygienic practices? more

Resolved Question: Why don't city or county governments establish "safe zones" where the public can shoot fireworks legally?

To sell fireworks legally, one needs a license. So government makes money off the sale of fireworks. But government also typically restricts the shooting of fireworks to places outside the city limits. The problem is that even outside city limits, the land is owned by someone. And if the owner catches you popping fireworks on their land, they can charge you with trespassing or other for creating a fire hazard or disturbing the peace. This is understandable as they don't want their crops, barns, or even brush areas burnt up by errant fireworks. So there is this delimna. If you don't own land outside the city limits, you can't pop fireworks unless you break the law or have a friend with land outside city limits that will permit you to pop your fireworks. And such friends are not nearly as common as are fireworks stands along the road, beckoning all to come make a legal purchase but with no real recommendation as to where to pop them. My point is that the whole system seems to be condoned in one part by government through licenses to sell fireworks, but that there is no accomodation on the other side for popping these things legally and safely unless you own land outside city limits (or have friends who do). It seems like a big set up for government to write tickets and make more money off a system with design flaws from the get-go. It reminds me of how much money government makes off the sale of alcohol, but does not provide sufficient breathalizer facilities at bars and elsewhere so that those imbibing can figure if their BAC is at .07 or .09. The government assumes you can figure this difference implicitly before you get in the car, but that's ridiculous. So they make money on the front via alcohol taxes and alcohol licenses, then they make money on the back side again with all the tickets and court fees and fines for DUIs -- never really accomodating the situation with the correct facilities or equipment for people to make informed decisions before they get in the car. I sometimes feel like the government doesn't WANT me to always obey their laws so they build in inefficiencies or don't employ sensible solutions with currently available technology, just so they can keep generating more tickets and make more money for their system. We seem to have the solutions at hand (e.g. "safe zones" to pop fireworks, and inexpensive, disposable breathalizers at every location liquor is sold)...but government doesn't move forward to embrace such sensible solutions because it could mean a drop in their own revenues. Is government a bit too self-serving and archaic this way? more

Resolved Question: Why did Mexico's military aid, help, and assist Americans after Katrina hurricane in New Orleans, USA ?

On August 30, 2005, Mexican President Vicente Fox sent his condolences to President George W. Bush: "In the name of the people and of the government of Mexico, I assure you of my deepest and most sincere condolences for the devastating effects caused by Hurricane Katrina". He also mentioned his instructions to the Secretariat of Foreign Affairs; that the United States would be provided with any kind of help that was needed. Resolved Question: What is a good resource to learn about pro cameras from?

Industry magazines have numerous camera comparisons and tests, but they assume their audience has familiarity with DSLR level equipment. See, up until now, I have used either a $150.00 point & shoot or a disposable camera-in-a-box. I DO plan on going to school, hopefully this winter or spring, but till then, any tips? Thanks in advance. P.S. Resolved Question: Is this what you want?

Barack Obama has a strong record of working across the aisle to reform how business is done in Washington. Throughout his career of public service, Barack Obama has worked across party aisles with Republicans and Democrats alike to reform our campaign finance system, confirm qualified judges like Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Sam Alito, and enhance our homeland security. He spoke out against his own party's out-of-control spending, against the Administration to change a failing strategy in Iraq, and against an energy bill that was full of giveaways to Big Oil companies. To keep our nation prosperous, strong and growing we have to rethink, reform and reinvent: the way we educate our children; train our workers; deliver health care services; support retirees; fuel our transportation network; stimulate research and development; and harness new technologies. Under a Barack Obama presidency the United States will experience robust economic growth, and Americans will again have confidence in their economic future. A reduction in the corporate tax rate from the second highest in the world to one on par with our trading partners; the low rate on capital gains; allowing business to deduct in a single year investments in equipment and technology, while eliminating tax loopholes and ending corporate welfare, will spur innovation and productivity, and encourage companies to keep their operations and jobs in the United States. Doubling the size of the child exemption will put more disposable income in the hands of taxpayers, further stimulating growth. Well only a few figured it the rest are just morons who vote because of race This was a reverse deal this was all John McCains policies with Satan Obamas name placed in place of McCain more

Voting Question: Video Company THROWS OUT old cameras & professional video equipment. Where could they donate the stuff to!?!?!?

OK, I can't give the company name but a company located in Chicago, IL that films sporting events and concerts and stuff like that yet are not affiliated with any television studio is always getting in new equipment as the tech advances. They have some video cameras, VERY expensive lenses, and tons and tons of cables that they just, literally, toss in the trash when they are not needed any more... One of the engineers has brought up putting them out in eBay but the company decided that it was too time consuming to do that so they just chuck them in the bin. The stuff is old... But still, the 'old' stuff is HI8 and MiniDV so it is still a viable format. I was able to borrow a Sony HandiCam for a project and they treated it as if it was just a disposable camera! Are there any organizations that would take this stuff? Schools? Do you think that schools would take it for their tech courses? PLEASE... I'm begging you for recommendations because they are THROWING OUT thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars worth of equipment in to a big dumpster and my father won't let me go over there and dumpster dive to retrieve this stuff!! I've even seen computers, (I don't know how much hardware they took out before chucking it but I'm thinking they might have just wiped the hard drive and tossed it whole) some old'ish office furniture, even an exercise machine... (I can't remember what it was. An exercise bike or something like that) I was thinking about Freecycle but then they would have to arrange for pick up and they want to keep security tight... So that may not be an acceptable solution... Sigh... I'm at a loss! I am a "Waste Not - Want Not" person that is pained to know that so much valuable equipment is just going to a land fill... It is a waste that is a treasure trove to anyone I can contact to arrange for pick up!! Thank you very much for ANY advice you can offer...  more

Resolved Question: Where shall I hire a birth pool from in the UK?

I'm hoping to hire something like the "birth pool in a box", smallish, inflatable, on the cheap side (not a heated £350 job!), from a reliable (online?) company. Definitely hire NOT buy, I know it's sometimes cheaper to buy but I don't want the hassle of getting rid of it after - I don't want to keep it. Preferably one where the additional equipment either comes with the pool in the hire contract (re-usables like a water thermometer) or is cheap to purchase from the same company (disposables such as additional liners and sieves!!). Would appreciate personal experience, especially with home births - not just lists of sites that hire pools (I've googled for them myself!). There's so much to think about already I could do with some advice from those who've been in my position before! Please share your wisdom!! Thanks more

Resolved Question: who is in charged for discarded computer components???

The discarded items often are known as e-waste. As technology advances and prices fall, many people think of computers as disposable items. Computers contain toxic elements, including lead, mercury, and barium. Computers thrown into landfills or burned in incinerators can pollute the ground and the air. A vast amount of e-waste ends up polluting third world countries. One solution is to recycle old computers. Some lawmakers prefer a more aggressive approach, such as setting up a recycling program that would be paid for by adding a $10 fee to the purchase price of computers and computer equipment, or forcing computer makers to be responsible for collecting and recycling their products. California already requires a recycling fee for any products sold that include old monitors and other equipment!! Manufacturers have taken steps, such as offering to recycle old computers and using energy efficient and environmentally friendly manufacturing techniques, but some claim that consumers should bear the responsibility of disposing of their old computers parts. Question is.. what should we do 2 make sure th comps are disposed safely?? plus, do u think t government n th manufacturers shld be th peeps who are responsible 4 safe disposal??  more

Resolved Question: Getting you nails done?

How many of you have got acrylic nails put on for your engagement/wedding? A lot of my friends said that they started getting their nails done shortly after becoming engaged or did it for their wedding. Now mind you, I'm not going to do something just because everybody else does, but I've been seriously thinking about getting a full set because I hate my nails. I have a really bad habit of biting my nails that I just don't think I will ever kick (I've tried everything). I used to have my nails done on and off for years, so I know everything that comes with getting them done, like damaged nails and such. Then one day, my hairdresser scared me into getting them taken off by telling me about people she knows who's hands nearly fell off from infections they got from nail salons. Today I found a nail salon that uses disposable equipment, and they use new tools for each customer. I'm was so excited, and then I started having second thoughts. Fake nails look so fake, but (cont.)I hate the way my nails look!!!Kristy - Unfortunately a diamond ring hasn't stopped me from biting my nails, lol. It almost did, but I eventually caved in :(Great answers so far. I'm so torn because I know the only thing that has stopped me from biting my nails in the past is acrylic nails. more

Resolved Question: Pressure cooker/canner versus autoclave...??

I went with my friend to some guy's house to get tattooed (my friend, not me). I didn't want her to go because usually people who do them at home don't have the best equipment or are not trained or whatever. However, he had a very professional-looking, clean, nice room that he used for tattooing--but I did not see an autoclave. So I asked him if he had one and he said most of the time he uses disposable tubes, that autoclaves were way too expensive, and that he had a pressure cooker which works the same way and does the same thing as an autoclave. Is this true? Does a pressure cooker gets stuff sterilized as well as an autoclave? I mean, they do look very similar and it would make sense, but what are you opinions? Thanks... ;O) more

Do you use disposables then? 4) If your child goes to a nursery, do they allow you to use them or request that you send disposables? 5) Will I need to buy new ones in bigger sizes every few months/weeks or very rarely? 6) What is the initial expenditure (ie the purchase of the nappies and equipment)? 7) What is the weekly expenditure (ie liners and cleaning solution)? 8) If I do decide to use them can you recommend a routine/any tips that will make it easier and save time and stress? Thanks in advance. more
